A new identity scam has been discovered and according to the Attorney General of Kansas, it may have made its way to Kansas.
People are contacted by a scammer by phone. They are told that there is a warrant out for their arrest because they missed going to jury duty. When the scammer is told that they never received notice the scammer asks for identification such as a social security number to verify with their records. Once the scammer receives the personal identification, the identity theft has been completed.
Court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone. For more information, go to the FBI website: http://www.fbi.gov/page2/june06/jury_scams060206.htm

This is one of the oldest scams around (For years I have written on the subject of phone scares by con men purporting to represent various government agencies).
Old fashioned letter mail is always used by the courts to engage in official business. They don't even trust the internet or email. Never over the phone.
