Kansas man sentenced for illegal machine guns:
LINCOLN — Richard Canfield, 32, of Overland Park, Kan., was sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted for possession of an unregistered machine gun, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Judge Richard G. Kopf sentenced Canfield Friday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln.
On Nov. 25, 2008, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped a car driven by Aaron Lawless of Gothenburg, formerly of Kearney, on Interstate 80 near Odessa for traveling 81 mph in a 55 mph construction zone.
When the trooper interviewed Lawless, he found two machine guns inside the car.
Lawless’ passenger, Canfield, owned the guns, but neither gun had a serial number or was registered to Lawless or Canfield with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
If you are wondering what they were doing with the unregistered machine guns, Canfield and Lawless had been shooting them earlier near Cozad.
I wouldn't have an unregistered machine gun, but I'm sure if I was not smart enough to have one, I wouldn't be driving nearly 30 mph over the speed limit. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Retailers spend a lot of time and money to prevent shoplifting, but a bigger threat to the bottom line is the person behind the counter and the employee taking the order. No one knows exactly how much employees steal each year, but one national survey late last year showed that companies lost $18.7 billion in the 12 months ending in June because of worker theft — the largest single cause of retail “shrinkage.” Another survey for 2008 found that employees stole far more than shoplifters and that among 22 large retailers, one in 30 employees was caught stealing. Sad isn't it? “It happens from the top down to the bottom up,” said Terrence Shulman, an author and a counselor on the subject who is a lawyer with a master’s degree in social work. Some recent local cases illustrate how large the problem can be. A former employee is suspected of stealing more than $300,000 in goods from a store in Kansas City. In Johnson County, a salesman and shipping clerk together stole an estimated $30,000 worth of suits from an Overland Park men’s store. Employees are also stealing from you the customer. On Twitter, a patron of a Kansas City business noticed that an extra $100 was added to the receipt after she had signed it. A Lenexa restaurant patron noticed that an employee had added a very large tip when he received his credit card statement. Experts say that with hard times, more employees are stealing, but many have always done it anyway. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has long said that 75 percent of employees steal at least once. Seventy five percent? How can Kansas City businesses stay in business with all of that theft? Guess who is paying for all of that stealing?

According to ComScore, Twitter has increased its unique visitors by 9% from December to January 2010. The main source, if not all, of the increase of traffic is Google according to Hitwise. Google introduced real time search in December and entered into an agreement with Twitter to show updates called tweets. Google will show tweets from trendy queries. I have noticed that Twitter traffic has increased in Kansas City and the interest in attending Twitter seminars and tweetups (similar to a meetup) has increased the past 3 months. A restaurant in Virgina and a business in Texas have discovered ways to increase their business sales by 50%. These same results can be achieved in Kansas City by utilizing a social media plan.
If you need help developing a social media plan that includes Twitter, maybe we should talk. I know some people I can get you connected with here in Kansas City.

Wow, I'm embarrassed! I like to be know as a trusted advisor. It is not uncommon to receive a phone call seeking advice. I get phone calls from relocation buyers looking to move to the area, homeowners looking to move out and people looking to move across town. I draw upon my 20 years of experience to provide my clients the best advice possible. Sometimes I get great "thank you" cards or emails like one I received this week from a client who wrote that my advice saved his marriage and his savings account. I also get request for great business referrals. This week I really blew it, though. I referred a friend to a computer repair company who provided very poor service. Matter a fact she got robbed. The computer repair company is a member of an area Chamber of Commerce and has a positive Better Business Bureau rating. That is why I'm writing you. I'm looking for your trusted advisors. Whether you know of an outstanding roofing company, incredible landscape company, or a dynamite automotive business. It doesn't matter and doesn't need to be related to real estate. Matter a fact, I get referral request to almost everything. If you know of someone you really like to do business with, would you share, please? I'm looking at creating a master list so that I can provide the highest level of service to my clients. When I shared my idea to a friend, they suggested a site on the internet. The sad part, most internet sites try to fool the public by stating that they're a free referral site, but in fact they're referral sites that charge the service providers. The businesses and service providers on most websites pay money for being mentioned, clicked or to move up on the site. I finally get it! Any ding dong who spends advertising money gets referrals, when in point of fact, most businesses tank in less than a year.
That is not what I want to do. I'm looking to provide outstanding service to my clients by creating a group of trusted advisors. Who knows, maybe you may need a referral to a Kansas City company in the future and I can help. Please take 10 seconds to share your trusted advisors.Trusted advisor form: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dE0waDVicmxyMGlmS1ZJR2dEMDBZZ3c6MAChris Dowell Dowell Taggart Team www.DowellTaggart.comWould you like the "Top 10 Kansas City Foreclosures For Sale"? The week in sports ended on a wild note. Kansas followed with a loss soon after Kentucky lost. Kansas State started sluggish but survived 40 minutes of high pressure from Missouri. started with a loss to Oklahoma State Cowboys.
In the Olympics, this maybe the best Winter Olympics for the US. The 4 man bob sled team ended a 50 year drought in the bob sled with a gold medal run.
Looking ahead, the American hockey team will play the Canadian hockey team for the gold medal. It's sad to see the Olympics end, it has been fun to watch, hasn't it?
Wednesday will be a big game for Kansas State. Will Kansas State be able to avenge an earlier loss to the Kansas Jayhawks? Although it will be played on the Kansas Jayhawks court, were they have had the best home court advantage, the Kansas State Wildcats should put up a great fight. I'm sure most sports fans in Kansas will be watching the game. Win or lose, the Wildcats should finish the Big 12 season in no less than tied for second.
Who will you be rooting for on Wednesday?

According to the Johnson County Appraiser, Paul Welcome, 68.7% of Johnson County property owners will receive a lower appraisal and 7.2% will receive a higher appraisal.
Although that is good news for Johnson County, Kansas property owners, it is not good news for the local government.
The local county and city government is already scrapping by and making cuts to budgets. Now they will need to make steeper cuts. Most of the Johnson County school districts were already planning on taking huge cuts like $8-10 million dollars. Now what?
Three things need to start. First, we need to create jobs in Johnson County. Second, we need to get home construction back on track. Third, we need to get people to feel confident about the economy and start spending again.

Pride Cleaners moved the company into a new headquarters in Grandview in February. The company spent $1.3 million to refurbish the building at 13613 S. U.S. Highway 71 and spent an additional $700,000 on new equipment. Grandview assisted Pride Cleaners by forming a Chapter 353 redevelopment corporation that provides 25 years of tax abatement. “This will be one of the top production facilities for dry cleaners in the country,” said Pride Cleaners owner, Dominic Brancato. “We’ve installed a lot of state-of-the-art equipment. We’ve got equipment from Italy that sorts clothing automatically. We’ve got the newest technology in shirt pressing.”
The 20,000-square-foot building Pride now owns is twice as big as the Overland Park location it had leased. The new Grandview plant and a second production facility in Mission do all the garment cleaning for 32 Pride Cleaners storefronts in the Kansas City area. The increased capacity will help Pride reach its goal of 50 locations.
Pride cleaners also has signed a deal to have a location in the Kansas City in Hen House locations and is currently working on a similar deal with the Kansas City Price Choppers. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

An Overland Park, Kan., man was arrested Friday in Belleville, Illinois on charges that he filed a false police report.
The Madison County State's Attorney's issued on Jan. 21 an arrest warrant with a $20,000 bond for Raymond C. Woods, 48. Woods filed a report against an Illinois State Police trooper alleging misconduct during a previous arrest. Illinois Police said the allegations are false.
"The Illinois State Police does not tolerate misconduct by employees and thorough investigations are always conducted into allegations of such misconduct," District 11 Commander Jerry Culp stated in a news release. "At the same time, department employees must be protected against false allegations of misconduct."
The Overland Park man was arrested in the St. Clair County Building after he appeared in court for charges from a previous arrest. He has since posted bond and been released from the St. Clair County Jail. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Yahoo! has entered into a similar deal with Twitter as Google did recently. Why? Kansas Citians want to discover and share tweets everywhere ranging from SMS and TV, to apps and the Web. For a global network of 600 million people, Yahoo! represents another portion of the Web. Typically, people are Google or Yahoo! surfers in Kansas City. Similar to the partnerships Yahoo! has made with other large internet companies, Yahoo! will receive what has been dubbed "Firehose"—a full feed of public tweets sent to Twitter and its partners every second of every day from all around the world, including Kansas City.
Through this arrangement, people will be able to find relevant tweets in Yahoo! Search as well as other popular products and properties, including the Yahoo! Homepage, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sports, and more. Yahoo! will also be able to build unique Twitter clients into their properties making it easier for folks to tweet wherever they feel comfortable within the Yahoo! network.
From the perspective of Yahoo!, the partnership represents a big opportunity. Tweets may be short, but they have proven over and over again to contain valuable information. As the Twitter information network grows and expands, it becomes more valuable for everyone who participates.
Twitter as worked out agreements with Google, Bing and Now Yahoo!. Who is next? It seems that Twitter is aggressively working to expand the use for businesses to use Twitter. Add the valuable apps that have been introduced and I'm not sure why a business in Kansas City isn't using Twitter.

Crime Scene KC:
16 cars have been stolen so far this year in Overland Park. Cars are being stolen from everywhere, single family homes, apartment complexes and from in front of businesses.
The Overland Park Police would like to remind people that it's against the law to leave a car running unattended. Here is the Overland Park oridinance:
It is a violation of Overland Park City Ordinances to leave a vehicle running with the key(s) in the ignition. A driver is required to stop the engine, lock the ignition and remove the key from the ignition.
The only exception to the ordinance is a vehicle equipped with a remote starter system, with no keys being left in the vehicle and the vehicles’ doors must be locked.
Lets see if we can get the amount of stolen cars reduced in Overland Park by keeping cars locked when warming up. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Facebook awarded patent for news feeds:
Facebook's news feed from its 400 million users has helped the social network far surpass its competitors, which also supply similar digital streams of consciousness. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week granted Facebook Patent No. 7,669,123 for "dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network." Facebook applied for the patent on Aug. 11, 2006, and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg heads the list of inventors. The 16-page patent describes how Facebook presents those status updates, links and more. By Facebook's own numbers, that's 60 million status updates per day posted by 35 million users. Facebook isn't commenting on whether it believes the patent covers rival social networks, which all offer similar news feed updates, such as Twitter's 'What's Happening,' MySpace's 'What are you doing now?' and LinkedIn's 'Network Updates.'" Most Expensive Game Ever Sells For $41,300:
Stadium Events has officially taken the crown as the most expensive video game ever sold. A sealed copy of the NTSC version of Stadium Events sold on ebay for $41,300!
This is more expensive than Nintendo Campus Challenge which sold for $20,100 or Nintendo World Championships Gold which sold for $21,400. The two previous record prices.
The seller of the game lives in Olathe, Kansas and had purchased the game brand new at a Richmond Gordmans, a department store in the midwest, for $29.99. They never opened it after they realized it needed a power pad to play. They never got around to returning it either (maybe the smartest decision they ever made).
The seller had a total return of 137,568% or 37.9% per year on this 'mistaken' Stadium Events purchase. That's a better return than Apple, Microsoft, or almost any other investment you could make at the same time.
Wow, I have some games that I bought and never opened in my closet. I wonder if I have a $41.300 game in there. I'm going to quit blogging and start going through my closet.

Former K-State star Sproles now a free agent:
The San Diego Chargers have decided not to tender a contract to Sproles, a speedy running back from Olathe North and Kansas State, allowing him to test the free-agent market, a person with knowledge of the situation said Friday.
The Chargers haven’t made an official announcement.
The move came four days after the team released Tomlinson, who ranks eighth on the all-time rushing list with 12,490 yards.
If the Chargers wanted to keep Sproles, they’d have to make him an offer of about $7.3 million.
I'm not sure if the Kansas City Chiefs have it in their budget to acquire Sproles. When Sproles visited Arrowhead he always got huge cheers even in the uniform of the Chargers. It would be nice to get Sproles back to the midwest.
Anyone working at Arrowhead working on this? Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Is it just me . . . Why do people send a friend request on facebook and then have everything hidden?
Yesterday, I received 38 friend request on facebook. Twenty six of those friend request were from people who lived a hidden life. What do I mean? Their profile was hidden. If you were one of them let me help you out.
When I'm looking at accepting a friend request on facebook, I start with the following process.
First, I look at the name. Since I do public speaking events, I don't recognize every name.
Second, I look at the profile picture. If you were sitting in the 7 row and didn't ask questions, I might have a hard time recognizing your picture. Now if you're creative and have a logo or family picture, I'm going to have a really hard time recognizing you.
If I don't recognize your name and picture, I will then go to your info tab. If this is hidden, I will then go to your wall. If that is hidden, how will I know you?
Next, since I have a lot of friends, I like to keep them organized. If I don't know what you do, where you live, how I know you, then how am I going to know what group to put you in?
Ok, you say just add a personal message at the beginning. Great, that is a great idea!
Unfortunately, less than 10% of the people who send me a friend request do that.
If you want to be my friend on Facebook, please help me out by hinting your identity.
My Facebook vanity url is http://www.facbook.com/kansascityrealestate .

Two lakes stocked with 4,000 pounds of rainbow trout:
This past week, Heritage Park, in Southern Olathe, got stocked with part of a 4,000 pound shipment of trout.
Johnson County Park officials said most of the trout would be caught by the start of the summer by anglers. About 30 fish are tagged, so park official can keep track of how many have been caught. They said a few might survive until August but not many. Trout is a fish that likes cold water and is not native to Kansas.
The 4,000 pounds trucked into the parks this week came from a fish hatchery in Ava, Mo., which is just east of Springfield.
The load cost the district $11,600 or $2.90 a pound. Park officials said those dollars don’t come from taxpayers. The money is derived from fees paid to the park district by anglers for the right to catch the trout.
Park officials said they spend slightly more than $20,000 a year to stock the lakes with fish.
I heard that stocking that lake at Heritage Park was quite a spectacle. A hole was cut in the ice and the fish were dropped in the hole. I was told that kids in the spectator crowd were allowed to handle the trout and drop into the holes. Sounds kind of fun!
I haven't been out to Heritage Park to fish but it sounds kind of fun. Fishing for trout is fun in the Missouri rivers and I wonder if fishermen get the same kind of experience at Heritage Park. I plan on getting a license this year and taking the kids out to Heritage Park and checking out this adventure for myself.
Does anyone have any Heritage Park fishing experiences they would like to share. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

First National Bank of Olathe is declared in “troubled condition”:
First National Bank of Olathe officially has been declared in “troubled condition,” according to a consent agreement released Friday by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
The bank, which has $904.4 million in assets, is the 11th largest in the Kansas City market based on market share of deposits, according to a Kansas City Business Journal list of top area banks.
The OCC gave the bank 90 days from the consent agreement’s Jan. 21 signing date to increase its capital reserves. The bank regulator also increased those reserve requirements beyond the normal levels. First National Bank of Olathe must maintain an 11 percent total risk-based capital ratio. Regulators normally require banks to maintain a 10 percent ratio to be considered well capitalized, and a minimum of 8 percent to be adequately capitalized. First National Bank of Olathe had a 6.1 percent total risk-based capital ratio as of Dec. 31, according to the FDIC.
I wonder if the 55 million dollar loss had anything to do with the new declaration by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency? The bank only had 35 million dollars of total equity as of December 31st, 2009. Also as of December 31st, the bank had 98 million dollars in loans that were past due at least 90 days.
I'm no accountant, but I'm sure these numbers don't had to successful banking practices. Why didn't the First National Bank of Olathe start steps prior to the defaulting loans to prevent the problems they are currently experiencing?
I do not bank at the bank but I have had some experiences and they have been positive. I hope that the Kansas City's 11th largest bank is able to get their risk capital ratio to 11 percent within the timeline. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

What Is That Thing Along I-435? :
Many may have wondered what the odd object on top of a huge 80-foot pole is along Interstate 435 near Roe Avenue in Overland Park. Some have said it looks like a small Ferris wheel, while others have compared it to the wheel of a paddle boat. Other have called it modern art. However, the object is none of those. The object at the A.L. Huber Company is a wind turbine, put up to showcase green energy, company officials said.
'It's a vertical access turbine that turns horizontally,' A.L. Huber's Phil Thomas said. 'It has slower wind speeds so you don't have noise or vibration or bird kill or ice throw -- any of the things associated with more traditional wind turbines ... When it's windy we're using the power it generates in our office.'
Thomas said the turbine is the first of its kind to be installed in North America.
I'm glad I found this article. Nearly every time I drive past that turbine, I wonder what it is and why there. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Bernanke: Fed will keep interest rates lowl:
Ok, I really don't have any power but if you believe recent news, interest rates will not rise soon. The Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke reassured Congress on Wednesday that the Fed has no plans to raise its interest rates anytime soon.
“The federal funds rate is likely to remain exceptionally low for an extended period,” Bernanke told the House Financial Services Committee."
Sounds great and should ease fears for home sellers who will not be ready to sell their homes by Arpil 30th. The fear has been that magically in May, mortgage rates would start increasing thus decreasing home buyers purchasing power. Fewer buyers for your home means lower price.
It is good to see that the Fed has no plans on raising rates. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

As I was writing a victory post my train of thought was just captured by a headline on the internet. All I could muster up was a snappy headline.
For the past few months I have been working on a way to get Facebook to move its new office outside of California. In my quest as a REALTOR, I have been trying to drum up support. But most of the people I have talked to said so what? What will it do for me?
Through the grapevine (hightech REALTOR circle) I heard that two other REALTORS got their state governments involved. Why wouldn't they? They get it. Facebook would initially employ 200 people. Most of those jobs will pay higher than the median average.
Forget the facts that Facebook is used by 400 million and is a great website to network with friends, families and customers. Facebook would be great for Johnson County.
So here it goes. Looks like Johnson County, Kansas is losing out to Austin, Texas. Texas Governor Rick Perry announced in a Facebook note (How appropriate!) that the state is willing to offer Facebook $1.4 million in incentives to establish the new operation — along with its 200 jobs — in the city of Austin.
The deal is contingent on the city of Austin agreeing to pitch in $200,000 of incentives itself and on Facebook actually deciding that Austin is the best place to go. Austin will vote on the plan within a few weeks.
Anybody have any connections in Johnson County to help court Facebook here?
Johnson County is a high tech county with may tech jobs. The county boast wonderful schools and affordable housing and . . . Oh forget it. We Johnson Countians know how great the county is to work and raise a family. Add the benefits of rubbing shoulders with Kansas City and next to three awesome schools (ok 2 out 3 isn't bad). Johnson County is a great choice.
Hopefully my couple months worth of work will not be useful. Anybody have any ideas on how to bring Facebook to Johnson County, Kansas? Here is the Facebook note from the Texas governor:
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today announced that the state will invest $1.4 million through the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) for Facebook to create a sales and operations office in Austin. This investment will create 200 jobs and more than $3.1 million in capital investment. The TEF funding is conditioned upon the finalization of a local incentive agreement with the City of Austin.
“The TEF continues to be a critical, deal closing tool for Texas, helping to attract jobs and businesses and grow our state’s diverse economy,” Gov. Perry said. “Facebook’s expansion in Austin will enhance the area’s robust technology industry, create 200 jobs for Texans, and strengthen the economy in Central Texas.”
Facebook is a social networking service that enables 400 million people around the world to communicate more efficiently with friends, family and coworkers in a trusted environment. This office represents the first major U.S. expansion outside of Palo Alto, Calif., where the company is headquartered.
“We’ve been exploring various options around the U.S. to establish an additional online sales and operations office and we’re grateful to the assistance we've received from the Governor’s office and the state’s leadership in discussing the possibilities in Austin,” Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said. “Facebook continues to grow and Austin, with its deep talent pool, would allow us to hire the high-caliber employees we need to properly serve the people, advertisers and developers that rely on our service.”
At Gov. Perry’s request, the legislature created the TEF in 2003 and re-appropriated funding in 2005, 2007 and 2009 to help ensure the growth of Texas businesses and create more jobs throughout the state. TEF projects must be approved by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House. The fund has since become one of the state’s most competitive tools to recruit and bolster business. To date, the TEF has invested more than $388.6 million and closed the deal on projects generating nearly 52,000 new jobs and more than $14.3 billion in capital investment in the state.
I guess if I can't get Facebook to move an office to Johnson County, I'll just keep on visiting Facebook on our laptops. It would be nice, though, to see a big blue Facebook sign along I-435 someday, wouldn't it?

Legislation OK'd to snuff smoking at Kansas restaurants, bars, workplaces:
Get ready to say goodbye to smoking sections. Kansas is kicking the habit by becoming the latest state to outlaw smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces.
In a landmark move, the Kansas House on Thursday voted to send a statewide smoking ban to Gov. Mark Parkinson, who has promised to sign it into law. Parkinson, a Democrat, called the legislation “a victory for workers, families, businesses and future generations.”
Once it is signed, the ban will take effect July 1.
A few Kansas healthcare officials who lobbied to have this legislation passed provided research that heart attacks had dramatically been reduced after smoking bans had been enacted. Here is how the Kansas legislators voted: How area House lawmakers voted Thursday on the statewide smoking ban, HB 2221: REPUBLICANS VOTING YES: Pat Colloton, Leawood; Barbara Bollier, Mission Hills; Jill Quigley and Ron Worley, both of Lenexa; Sheryl Spalding and Marvin Kleeb, both of Overland Park; and Kay Wolf, Prairie Village. REPUBLICANS VOTING NO : Anthony Brown, Eudora; Owen Donohoe, Shawnee; Mike Kiegerl, Lance Kinzer, Rob Olson, Scott Schwab and Arlen Siegfreid, all of Olathe; Ray Merrick, Stilwell; and Connie O’Brien, Tonganoxie.
REPUBLICANS NOT VOTING: Kevin Yoder, Overland Park. DEMOCRATS VOTING YES: Lisa Benlon, Dolores Furtado and Gene Rardin, all of Overland Park; Cindy Neighbor, Shawnee; Mike Slattery, Mission; Milack Talia, Merriam; Melanie Meier, Leavenworth; Valdenia Winn, Louis Ruiz, Margaret Long, Broderick Henderson, Stan Frownfelter, Tom Burroughs, all of Kansas City; Marti Crow, Leavenworth. DEMOCRATS VOTING NO: Mike Peterson, Kansas City.
I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I think this is great for Kansas. It is nice to take the family to clean air restaurants. I'm glad I don't have to figure out which city is ok to eat at and which one is not ok to eat at. The legislation, though, drops the ball by exempting state run casinos. I'm also wondering why the Olathe legislators voted NO on the legislation. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

With millions of people connecting through social media, advertisers and marketers are hustling to get in on the action. Twitter has grown from a million tweets a day in 2009 to 50 million tweets a day in February 2010. In the past year we’ve seen many companies and brands attempt to step into this new world only to fail miserably. After researching successful and analyzing successful tweeters, I have found a successful formula To be an effective marketer on Twitter.
Marketing and advertising on Twitter requires a bit of a shift in your mindset. Twitter is all about simple conversations; you can’t use press releases, marketing copy and other one-way communication tactics and expect results. The new social media requires interaction—with you and with each other. Matter a fact, customers crave it and if they don't get it, they will go else where on the web.Tweeting is one-to-one, with the benefit of being in a public space where other customers may overhear your conversation and interact with each other on your behalf. Here are my 9 Twitter rules:
#1 Know the rules - Get to know your friends and neigbors It’s important to remind yourself of the fact that Twitter is a real life community and that every community has it’s own set of rules. Before you jump into the conversation, spend some time watching and learning. You’ll find that most people are very friendly and supportive, but it’s best to understand the ground rules first.
The easiest way to jump in is to ask for help. Seek out a pro in your community and seek guidance. This may seem strange at first because brands are used to being on the other end of the spectrum, typically telling consumers what to do. Asking for advice might have you feel as if you are making your brand vulnerable, but the fact that we as a community are helping each other out, is what makes social media great.
Another way to find local tweeters is to go Google and do a search of your community. Next, click on show options on the line that shows the number of results. On the left chose updates. The results will show local social media results with the keyword of your city.
#2 Connect person to person - People don’t talk to brands, they talk to people It doesn’t matter how large your company is. On Twitter, people want to connect to a person. They are not interested in talking to your ‘brand’. Make your updates personable and human, not scrubbed and polished like news columns. It’s fine to be a little rough around the edges. Talk as though you are talking to a group of friends around a dinner table (just tone down the language).
If you can, identify a real person to write the updates to give a face to your Tweets. For example, Garmin's Twitter account (@JakesJournal) is headed by Jake from Garmin. Jake from Garmin is a person who manages Garmin's blog team and syndicates their post on Twitter.
By using Twitter, Garmin is offering an alternative, less corporate confined outlet for customers to receive support. Customers are able to ask questions and be communicated with on their own turf; no more having to wait in long lines, no need to press 3 for more options!
#3 Create a conversation - Twitter is a two-way street Some companies might eye Twitter as another ‘channel’ to conquer. This kind of thinking is dangerous with interactive marketing. Maybe that is why Twitter is managing to handle 50 million tweets a day. Social Media is not about building a channel; it’s about creating a conversation. Your job should be to get people talking by posing questions, asking for input and connecting people as a trusted third party.
Creating a conversation requires something that many marketers are not used to: actively listening to customers. The new age of marketing and advertising as evolved into social interaction. This back and forth motion is what makes social media wonderful and helps build an emotional connection between your brand and consumers. Since consumers now have more choices and are able to jump from brand to brand in an instant, this relationship has become more crucial than ever.
You'll find more valuable friends when you can engage in a conversation. During my research I asked questions to 35 tweeters. Out of 35 only 2 responded back with me with 48 hours. Do you think I revisited the tweeters who didn't reply to my simple questions? Not only have I not revisited their accounts, but I also think they are using Twitter and all of social media the wrong way.
I'm tired of people just trying to sell me something, aren't you?
#4 Promote a dedicated ambassador - Make Social Media a part of your plan Social Media outlets like Twitter work best when they are frequently updated. You’ll find that the most prolific companies on Twitter have tens of thousands of updates. This may seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be; these updates tend to be short, quick and off-the-cuff.
I find that it works best when a single person internally to act as a social media liaison. It is ok for more person in the company to be tweet about the company. Just let it start with one person and have the rest of the team retweet and create discussions about new products, services or news.
When designating ambassadors for your company, be sure to establish some “rules of engagement”. This will serve as a guideline on dealing with and deciding on conversations they should participate in and which ones should get escalated within your organization.
Remember it is all about engaging a conversation with your customers.
#5 Have something to offer - Give people a reason to follow you People love to pass on information and if people are following your brand on Twitter, they are already showing a proclivity to your message. So why not reward them? Offer inside information, special offers or just one-to-one conversation with customers who follow you through Social Media. People love to spread valuable news and entertaining stories.
Once you have been using Twitter for a while, you’ll notice key people that like to talk about your company (aka “Influencers”). These people are worth more than you can imagine! Encourage users by converting them into brand ambassadors: Invite them to your private product launches, let them contribute to new feature requests, ask them how you can improve. Not only will you gain firsthand, unfiltered information on how your products are used in the real world, you’ll also activate a network of ambassadors to give you the best thing you could ask for: positive word-of-mouth.
Your influencers are your companies bullhorns. Seek them out and share quality tweets with them. Your influencers will share valuable information with their followers. That is how they became influencers.
An influencer can get your message out to thousands of people in a short period of time.
#6 Twitter and your website - Integrate your messaging Twitter is a very flexible technology, which is what makes it so powerful. The fact that Twitter can be set up to automatically update your followers every time you post a blog entry or that any RSS feed can be re-broadcasted through your Twitter postings, are great examples of Twitter’s strengths.
Another great option is the ability to add buttons, badges and widgets to sections of your other sites (articles, pages, etc.) so that visitors are able to “Tweet” it’s contents. Each article or page can be linked with a button that allows customers to send an update to their followers with a quick blurb and a link to your page. Again, people generally only Tweet interesting or compelling content and a list of products or features may not be very intriguing to them.
#7 Tracking Conversations - Listen and Learn By using the @reply feature, it’s easy to discover people talking about your brand. The Twitter search function also allows you to search by your company or product name. Use these tools to discover the things being said about you in real-time. Stay on top of what’s being said about you by frequently checking your @replies; you might be surprised by what you find. More advanced tools also exist that allow you to graph conversation activity over time, as well as monitor positive and negative sentiment amongst users. Using these tools help to provide you with a more in-depth understanding about what people are saying; which in turn will help you develop more relevant conversations. Companies likeTrendrr, Infegy, ScoutLabs & Radian6 offer more robust monitoring tools.
Start a hashtag (#business name) for your business, product (#product)/or service (#service) to help track tweets.
A club that I participate in is the Social Media Club of Kansas City. Their hashtag is #smckc. Hashtags help your customers, followers and members easily follow you.
My favorite Twitter application for monitoring Twitter is Hootsuite. Hootsuite is an online application that allows you monitor multiple twitter accounts, conversations as well as delaying tweets. If you use Hootsuite correctly, it can help easily monitor conversations on Twitter.
#8 Start a Tweetup - Meet in Real Life Twitter is a great tool to create online conversations. The positives are numerous. If you want to add to Twitter, start promoting tweetups. A tweetup is nothing more than a meetup, a live meeting or gathering. You could promote a club or organization. If you are a business you could promote a daily discount or if you are a restaurant you could promote a lunch special.
Meetups have been popular for several years. Tweetups have increasingly become popular the past couple months. A tweetup is gathering of people to socialize and network. There are claims by some businesses that 1/2 of the daily revenue comes from promoting tweetups. A restaunrant in Virgina claimed that they had 60% more lunch patrons due to promoting lunch tweetups and a BBQ restaurant in Texas reported recently that 73% of their sales come from promotions on Twitter such as tweetups.
Tweetups don't have to be for only the hardcore tweeters. Anyone can attend. The fun is socializing and sharing.
If you want to see how a tweetup works, come to our next tweetup on March 10th. The March 10th tweetup will start at 5:30 the Fox and the Hound Restaurant. If you want to sponsor a door prize contact me. If you know Martin and myself, we will have some networking activities planned. Our hashtag is #kcn.
#9 Most Important - Remember Who You Are Tweeting to People who read your tweets really don't care about you. They really care about themselves. Remember this! Share worthwhile content that will save them time, money, make them feel good or will help them improve their life.
What do I mean? Lets say you are in real estate like myself. Do you think my customers only want to hear about real estate? What happens if they have bought a home from me, do you you think they want to hear about real estate from me everyday? Experience tells me that an average person moves every 5-7 years, so I need to find lots of content to fill in. My goal is to provide information so when my customer is ready to move or know of someone ready they think of me.
What do I tweet? I tweet coupons that can save my customers money, ideas about decorating, things to do, people who can help make their lives easier. This morning I tweeted about a professional organizer. He can come into my customers homes and make their lives easier. Directly, that tweet will not benefit me. Indirectly, I'm promoting a business to my customers that will help them. Hopefully, my customers and followers remember me.
If you have a product or service that you want to reach 100,000 people, send me a tweet.
Why not start using some of these rules for Twitter? It is an easy way for followers to find you and an easy way to get found on Google.
If you have any ideas, please share. In the meantime if I can help you, send me a tweet.

NAIA Tournament Deal of the Day:
“Don’t place all your eggs in one basket—dunk them with authority,” said Dr. James Naismith, the founder of basketball. See how much the game has changed since upgrading from fragile ovoids to leathery spheres with today’s Groupon. For $35, you get general admission to all games during this year’s NAIA Divison I Men’s Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium from Wednesday, March 17 through Tuesday, March 23. Exchange your Groupon at the Municipal box office for all-admission tickets."
Basketball is big here in Kansas City so I expect the minimum number of people to take advantage of this Groupon Deal. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

A 650-pound Rubber Horse Helps Rescuers Train For Icy Emergencies:
Police officer Eric Thompson, Overland Park's chief animal control officer, is training Overland Park firefighters and its dive team to help his team do large animal rescue throughout Johnson County and the metro area.
Overland Park police hired him two years ago after the city annexed land that includes expensive horse farms. His team has been called to get three horses out of icy ponds this year, he said.
If these farms are expensive horse farms, why don't they have a plan to save their expensive horses rather than rely on the city fire department.
Is it in the community's best interest to devote resources for expensive horse farms? Does the fire department get reimbursed or does it charge for large horse rescues? I don't know.
I just thought the times of the fire department of saving cats in trees has changed. Oh, I guess it did, they are saving expensive horses that have fallen in ponds.
I keep on reading about how government departments are losing funding. Schools like the Blue Valley and Olathe School districts are losing nearly 10 million dollars, but we have funds for saving expensive horses.

Who is more powerful is a loaded question. To most people, the question would be answered differently.
I guess it depends on your frame of reference.
If you're in the military, it would probably be the top military man.
If you're in the state government, it would probably be the governor.
If you're a grade school kid, it would be the bully or tough kid of the school.
Yesterday, I asked the question to a group of people. And as I suspected I received many different answers. I heard the President, I heard large corporations, I heard Sam Walmart (Although I'm sure he meant Sam Walton and I think he is invested in smaller real estate right now), I heard Gates and that guy from Omaha (that is exactly what she said, "that guy from Omaha").
Interesting enough, I asked the same question to my 13 and 14 year old boys. Guess what they said?
They said,"Pick a keyword dad and let me look it up on Google".
Of course I picked a few keywords and they looked them up.
Interesting enough, we all have a different person who we think is most powerful.
If you are like my kids, maybe the most powerful people are the ones who dominate their industry on Google. The ones who dominate are the influencers of your industry.
If it is important to be powerful and an influencer in your industry, maybe it is a good time to start a blog and applying social media to your business.
If you need help, maybe we should talk. I'm not a social media expert, but I know some who are experts.

Man gets three years in scam against elderly
In an earlier blog post I wrote about an article I read about a caregiver taking money from her elderly patient.
Johnson County, Kansas prosecutor said that crimes against the elderly are rising.
In this blog post, I'm writing about how an Overland Park based company took approximately 1.2 million dollars from elderly customers.
Grant Wilms, 44, entered no-contest pleas previously to four felony counts of making a false writing and to four misdemeanor counts. Wilms was the president of ASP Inc. in Overland Park. Prosecutors say the company and its predecessor, NHCD, stole about $1.2 million from the elderly between August 2008 and July 2009. The scam hooked people seeking a discount on prescription drugs or dental work. As customers turned over bank or credit card information to the companies, scammers would take far more money out of the accounts than authorized, usually from $80 to $100 at a time.
I can truly understand how people can fall for these scams. People hear a story that sounds better than the one they are getting. For all we care it could be that they are paying $3.oo for gas. Everybody who has a car needs gas, right?
Somebody comes around and says if they buy gas from them, they will only be charged $2.00. How many people wouldn't start going to the place who charges $2.00 a gallon? Come on, everybody would, right?
These scam artist are doing the same thing. Everyone says that they wouldn't fall for them, but when you are on a tight budget, saving a couple dollars is a big deal.
As a diabetic, I get scammy looking deals every week. Hey if you buy your supplies from us, we'll save you X. And X is usually a BIG number.
Fortunately for me, I have good insurance. But what if I didn't have good insurance. I would probably take up one of the companies on their so called deals.
Last month, I heard through an email that a company was not recommended by my insurance company because of scammy deals.
These companies are everywhere and with the economy down, these companies are preying on the elderly and fixed income people.
What are you going to do to stop it? Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

JoCo to kick off Census campaign:
The "Johnson County Census 2010 Complete Count” kickoff celebration is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Monday in downtown Olathe.
The public event will be on the County Square between the Courthouse and Administration Building, weather permitting. It will be moved inside the Administration Building, 111 South Cherry Street, in case of bad weather.
The Census 2010 Complete Count by Johnson County Government is intended to build public awareness of the importance of conducting and completing the 2010 census count that starts in mid-March. The theme for the federal census campaign is “It’s in Our Hands.”
There are 10 questions on the Census and the no personal information is requested. Information from the Census is used to determine how the government will divide the 400 billion in federal money.
The federal money is used to pay for Medicaid, senior programs, block grants, road programs and more.
If a Census is not completed in a timely matter by mail, Census takers, will start knocking on doors of homes with incomplete Census.
In my opinion, it takes 10 minutes or less to do the Census and we only do it every 10 years. If you are one of the ones who completes fast, awesome! If the government needs to send a Census worker to your home then you increase the expense of doing this years Census.
Wouldn't it be great if Johnson County, Kansas had their Census completed by April 1st? Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Woman Faces Charges For Stealing Johnson County Elderly Man's Money:
A woman who prosecutors said was hired to care for a 79-year-old man was in Johnson County court on Wednesday accused of stealing up to $100,000 from the victim over the past three years. Sylvia Stanford was charged with felony mistreatment of a dependent adult. Court documents said she was the caretaker for Alfred E. Talley and that she took advantage of him, stealing his money.
"What's sad is, many times in cases like this, their entire savings is gone, leaving the person homeless," said District Attorney Steve Howe.
Steve Howe also said that cases like this are increasing and it is probably a sign of the times.
Surely someone out there has an idea to protect dependent adults like this. I wonder if dependent care can be taken care of by the care givers but the finances by a financing company, book keeper or accountant?
It makes sense to me and we would probably hear less of these cases. Something needs to be done. I can't imagine this not having a huge affect on these dependent people and probably destroying them emotionally and financially. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

The Crowe's Nest: NBC rolls along with Olympics Ratings:
Who could have predicted the success that the Olympics and NBC are having. This could be the best winter olympics ever on foreign soil. Look at the numbers:
171 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE WATCHED THE OLYMPICS ON THE NETWORKS OF NBC UNIVERSAL THROUGH TH FIRST 11 DAYS
25.5 Million Average Audience For First 11 Nights; Nearly 5 Million More and 24% Higher Than 2006 Winter Games
71 Million Watched Networks of NBC Universal on Monday
I believe I heard someone on tv say that in the last winter Olympics the USA had 6 medals. Last night I believe USA as already earned 26+ medals. I'm sure the success attributed to viewers is more in line with the success of the athletes. With more medals sure to come and exciting events like the hockey teams and the womens ice skating, I predict the next few days we will see some bigger numbers watching the Olympics. Google Executives Found Guilty Over Offensive Video:
In 2006, a person uploaded a video of a group of boys bullying a boy with down syndrome. Although this is a terrible act, the Italian courts make it worse. Four top Google representatives were sued in the Italian courts and were convicted.
The Google representatives did not post the video and when the video was brought to Google's attention the video was removed. The prosecutor claims that Google should never have allowed the video in the first place. David Drummond, one of the Google representatives convicted, plans to appeal the verdict, summing it up nicely: “If individuals like myself and my Google colleagues who had nothing to do with the harassing incident, its filming or its uploading onto Google Video can be held criminally liable solely by virtue of our position at Google, every employee of any internet hosting service faces similar liability.”
To my knowledge the boys who uploaded the video where not prosecuted and the sad part is David is right. What kind of message does this send to companies, corporations, bloggers, social media experts and web designers? Will everyone be concerned about the social interaction? Will we be judged by what people say or post on our sites like Facebook, Ning and Blogger accounts?
There will always be immature individuals and they should be the ones to prosecuted for their actions. It sounds like many people don't understand that society has changed from a marketing and advertising society to a social that uses marketing and advertising with interaction society.

Details: The Yahoo-Twitter Partnership:
A few months ago Twitter announced that their Twitter stream would show up on Google and Bing. In a few presentations to Kansas City business people I have shown how the Twitter streams are affecting Google searches. In addition, I have also shown how to view Twitter stream by using updates in the options menu.
Well if you are a Kansas City business and your not using Twitter, maybe this information will convince you to use Twitter.
First, Twitter is averaging 50 million tweets a day.
Second, Twitter is announcing that Twitter feeds will be updated on Yahoo. the three areas people will see Twitter on Yahoo are:
- Access to your Twitter feed on Yahoo: On Yahoo Mail, Sports, the homepage, and other Yahoo properties, you will be able to check the most recent tweets of your friends.
- Ability to update status from Yahoo: Yahoo will become a Twitter client, allowing you to update your status from multiple locations on Yahoo. We’re not sure if this is going to be through widgets or another method.
- Yahoo Search and media integration: Public Twitter updates will be integrated throughout Yahoo Search, News, Finance, and Entertainment, among other properties.
If you're a Kansas City business you should be tweeting specials, services, locations (if you have multiple locations) coupons, pics and industry specific news on a daily basis. Make sure you include your business name and web links.
If you need help with Twitter, be sure to come back to this blog. I will be posting some Twitter ideas for Kansas City businesses. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Kansas City Business Journal: AMC Entertainment plans back-to-back showings of all 10 Academy Awards Best Picture nominees:
"The Oscar folks decided for 2010 to expand the Best Picture category to 10 films, hoping to attract viewer interest by including the crowd favorites that often get shouldered aside for those that are more art-house fare.
AMC reacted, on one hand, with restraint by splitting the Best Picture Showcase over two, five-film weekends, beginning this Saturday and continuing March 6. For $30 a day or $60 for the pair, customers get a souvenir lanyard and all-you-can-eat popcorn. Locally, AMC Studio 30 in Olathe and AMC BarryWoods 24 in Kansas City are participating."
If It was on a regular weekday, I would probably take advantage of this Best Picture Showecase since I think I only saw one of the nominated movies. Since it is on the weekend, I will be helping Kansas City home buyers and with the tax credit ending soon, my team and I are busy right now. Shawnee woman pleads guilty in poisoning conspiracy:
"Yini De La Torre, 19, admitted that while working as a waitress there she twice added a deadly pesticide to salsa, which sickened dozens of people.
She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to tamper with a consumer product and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in a pending case against her husband, Arnoldo Bazan.
In her plea, prosecutors said, she said Bazan worked for the Mi Ranchito restaurant in Olathe until June 27, 2009. Bazan believed the chain’s owner was responsible for him losing his job and for the theft of Bazan’s vehicle, De La Torre said.
The couple poisoned the diners to get even with the owner, prosecutors said.
While Lenexa police investigated, Bazan told his wife not to talk or she would physically be harmed.
As a result of the poisonings, the Kansas City Mexican restaurant, Mi Ranchito, lost $250,000 in income for September and October in the Lenexa location.
Mi Ranchito is a popular Kansas City Mexican restaurant with six Kansas City locations.

Senate passes bill to ban texting behind the wheel:
"After debating how it would be enforced, the Senate voted 34-6 to send a ban on texting while driving to the House on Friday.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Tim Owens, R-Overland Park, pitched Senate Bill 351 as a public safety issue.
Drivers ticketed for sending a text message or e-mail via a wireless device would face a $100 fine for a first offense. A person who killed another person while texting and driving could be prosecuted under existing involuntary manslaughter charges."
This will be an interesting bill to enforce. I hope people take it seriously and understand that texting and emailing while behind the wheel of a car is dangerous. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Kansas moves closer to allowing bus travel on highway shoulders : "Johnson County could soon join a small group of cities and states offering bus service on highway shoulders. The Kansas House has approved a bill that would allow buses on the shoulder of Interstate 35 between the suburbs and downtown Kansas City. The measure now goes to the Senate. Buses could use the highway shoulders when traffic speed dips to less than 35 mph. The buses would be barred from going more than 10 mph faster than highway traffic. Buses also would yield to traffic leaving and entering the highway as well as to other vehicles on the shoulder. “It’s a real boon to public transit and would give them an advantage at being able to move at a little higher speed than the rate of traffic,” said Rep. Gene Rardin, an Overland Park Democrat."
I know there is lots of research on this but I'm not sure this is safe in Johnson County. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

City has homes for sale or rent thanks to stimulus funds:
"Olathe families will begin to reap the benefits of the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program in April. Olathe's Housing Services Division began taking applications this week for the program, which will use $1.9 million in stimulus funds to purchase foreclosed and abandoned houses. The city will seek bids to rehabilitate those properties and then either sell or rent the properties to qualified families. 'We received three applications so far and will start the review process,' said Kathy Rankin, city housing services manager. 'We have one owner-occupied property and two rental properties that will bid out for remodeling.' The city plans to purchase up to three homes to be sold and five to 10 homes to rent. The properties will be rehabilitated with the federal funds, so potential homeowners and renters will have homes that won't need further repairs for at least 10 years." This afternoon I had a short meeting with a past client. During the meeting a real estate agent from my community came up and introduced himself to me.
After introducing himself, he said, "I have your whole real estate marketing thing figured out and now you don't have an edge on me anymore." After a quick discussion with this agent he left with his friends.
During the rest of my meeting with my past client I was thinking "did I really lose my edge"? Is my competition catching up to me?
After my meeting was finished I went to the office to get on my analytic tools to compare my online marketing to this other agent. Here are the results I found:
I market my listings on 326,000 website pages. The so called real estate agent who figured my edge, markets on 234 website pages. Add in his office marketing of 1,217 pages and this agent has a real advantage, right?
Now if you're a Kansas City homeowner and thinking of selling your home, would you want your home marketed on 1,451 website pages or on 326,000 website pages?
OK, you will probably need more facts like, my website is the highest ranked Kansas City real estate agent website on over 125 top Kansas City real estate keywords.
The funny thing is, this so called real estate agent with a technological advantage over me charges his clients an additional commission fee to his clients. Great, pay more for less service.
If you understand the importance of being on the top of the search engines and you're thinking about selling your home, maybe we should talk.

Johnson County government kickoffs of Census Complete Count campaign:
"A “Johnson County Census 2010 Complete Count” kickoff celebration is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 1, in downtown Olathe. The public event will take place on the County Square between the Courthouse and Administration Building, weather permitting. It will be moved inside the Administration Building, 111 South Cherry Street, in case of inclement weather. The Census 2010 Complete Count by Johnson County Government is intended to generate public awareness to the important process of conducting and completing the 2010 census count that starts in mid-March. The theme for the federal census campaign is “It’s in Our Hands.” “Every year, the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal money is directly based on the total population of a city or county. The more residents counted the better,” Annabeth Surbaugh, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, said. “A complete and accurate count will be critical to Johnson County getting its fair share of money.”" Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Research by the consulting group, John Burns Real Estate Consulting, shows that there are 7.7 million households currently behind on their mortgage in the United States. Also in their study they predict that there will be 5 million real estate foreclosures in the coming months.
This research is mind boggling because we are supposed to be over the real estate foreclosure mess and heading the right direction. What this research shows is that the United States hasn't hit the foreclosure highs yet.

Capstone Awards honors Kansas City’s top real estate projects:
"Much of the attention on the commercial real estate industry lately has been focused on what isn’t happening. So it was a nice break to listen in last week as a panel of judges discussed some of the industry’s greatest accomplishments in 2009. This is the fifth year for our Capstone Awards program, and there is plenty to celebrate. Winning projects range from the $250 million renovation of Kauffman Stadium to Johnson County’s LEED Gold-certified emergency communications center to the sale/leaseback of YRC’s headquarters."
The Olathe Medical Pavilion was recognized for its green design and architectural design.

IHOP, of Olathe, has announced plans to serve millions of free pancakes in celebration of National Pancake Day on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. You can get a free short stack of their signature buttermilk pancakes from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. While the pancakes are free, IHOP hopes the program will raise $1.75 million for Children’s Miracle Network, an international non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals, and other worthy local causes. They’re asking guests to donate what they would have paid for the free pancakes, or more, to the Children’s Miracle Network.
This is really cool because through my affiliation with RE/MAX I'm very familiar with the Children's Miracle Network. The Children's Miracle Network is a great non-profit organization for Children's Mercy Hospital. In the Kansas City area there are IHOP locations in Grandview, south Kansas City, Overland Park, Merriam, Lee’s Summit, Olathe, Independence, Shawnee, Kansas City, and Kansas City, Kansas." Free Chicken Pox Vaccinations:
"The Kansas Immunization Program has been awarded American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding and is passing funding to health departments. Funding and vaccine was allocated to each of the 105 Kansas counties pro rata based on population and is one-time funding. Johnson County will receive 6,830 doses of the chickenpox vaccine. These doses will be used for adolescent catch-up immunization campaigns for the 2010-2011 school year. Income does not matter - the vaccine can be used for anyone. We want to reach as many adolescents as we can right away. The vaccine will be available at the Johnson County Health Department starting the week of February 22 during regular clinic hours. THE VACCINE IS FREE. This would be a great opportunity for your students to meet the new requirement - or go ahead and get the RECOMMENDED second dose - of Chickenpox. During Spring break, the week of March 15, the OLATHE clinic will be open from 8:30am – 7:00pm Monday – Thursday and 8:30am – 5:00pm on Friday. Olathe Clinic Office: 11875 S. Sunset Dr. Suite 300 Olathe, KS 66061 913-894-2525" Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Builders get revote on bill banning local sprinkler laws
Kansas Law Affects New Homes - A day after losing on a tie vote, builders and their supporters in the state House of Representatives won a revote on a bill that would prohibit local governments from mandating fire sprinklers in homes and small apartment buildings. Firefighters, cities and counties appeared to have fought House Bill 2515 to a standstill Wednesday when it went down to defeat in a 59-59 tie. But today, Rep. Scott Schwab, R-Olathe, moved to reconsider the bill. On the revote, it passed 65-55. The bill would prohibit cities and counties from passing building codes that require fire sprinklers in residential buildings of four units or less. Schwab's call for reconsideration puts him at odds with the firefighters from his hometown of Olathe, who strongly opposed the bill. The decision also was at odds with his feeling about protecting local control, but lawmakers had to protect the state economy, he said."
Although Sprinklers save lives the extra cost would cost first time home buyers a few more thousand dollars. The extra cost would prevent many first time home buyers from purchasing a new home. The law will not affect existing homes.

Schools seek feedback on upcoming cuts: "Facing the possibility of deep funding cuts, the Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission school districts are hosting community forums this week to let patrons know what the future might hold. Blue Valley faces possible cuts of $8 million to $9 million to deal with funding losses from last year and potential losses to come, Board President Steve Klika said. “We want to begin the educational process for our families so they understand what we’ll be wrestling through,” he said. Shawnee Mission could have to cut $10.7 million from its 2010-11 budget, Board Vice President Deb Zila said. This follows cuts made last year due to state funding losses and lower property values. “We had to take more than $10 million out of our budget last year, so it is pretty devastating here,” Zila said. “We will encourage people to get a hold of their legislators and tell them they are concerned. We really cannot have any more cuts in education, and the financial formula has eventually got to get righted.”"
In my opinion to make keep the Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission School Districts has premier school districts, they need to make some drastic changes.
First, they need to get rid of their tenure system. The tenure system is a joke. Teachers know after they are tenured they don't have to work as hard. Reward teachers for their teaching abilities not for how long they have been teaching. I'm not picking on tenured teachers. There are some great ones who are actively improving their skills. I also don't think you grade teachers on how their pupils score because you may have a teacher who gets low performers in their classroom.
Second, due to budget cuts, the schools need to get rid of extracurricular sports. If kids want to participate, pony up the money. The school districts don't have the funds. I agree that sports are important, but not more important than the basics. For now, kids can join none school teams. My ideas don't cut varsity high school basketball and football.
Third, the school districts need get rid of the fluff. Teaching should be about the basics: English, Math, Reading & Science. Everything else while there are budget cuts gets cut.
I have other ideas that I will share in future blog post. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Farmers' markets taking EBT cards
"A record number of Kansans are receiving food assistance, and there is an increasing number of farmers' markets. So some people think it's only natural to increase access to those farmers' markets to those who receive assistance and use the electronic benefits transfer card, or EBT for short. 'People have the opportunity to explore local foods and get excited about trying different things,' said Mercedes Taylor-Puckett, coordinator of the farmers' market project for the Kansas Rural Center.
Allowing Kansas farmers markets to accept EBT cards will benefit Kansas. First, the people who use them will have the opportunity to buy fresh grown produce from Kansas. Second, the people who sell produce at Kansas markets will have a bigger pool of people to market their produce. Its a Win-Win for Kansas!

During my couple hours of research, I was surprised to find out that Kansas does not have a carbon monoxide law. Sure I didn't read ever single page of new laws and if there is a law to make it mandatory to have a carbon monoxide detector, I couldn't easily find it.
I'm kinda passionate about this because without a carbon monoxide in my home in the 90's I would probably not be writing this blog today. In 1997, a carbon monoxide detector saved my life. Another minute, according to the fire department and I would have been a in another place.
Recently, New York State, has enacted a law that any residence that has combustible gas (even for a lawn mower) or uses combustible gas will need a carbon monoxide detector on every sleeping floor plus on the floor were combustible gas is stored or used.
Although it is a very difficult law to police, I think Kansas should pass a law similar to New York State.
The benefit is simple. It will create more awareness about carbon monoxide deaths. A quick search on Google showed me that many people have been injured and people have died from carbon monoxide, including people in Kansas.

Kansas City Homebuilder plans appeal: Last week’s not guilty verdicts for Kansas City area homebuilder F. Jeffrey Miller may help in a planned appeal of the related case in which he already had been convicted, Miller’s attorney said Tuesday. The sweeping acquittal provides no legal case to challenge the earlier convictions, but “it is a nice atmospheric, that’s for sure,” said Jeff Morris, with the firm Berkowitz Oliver Williams Shaw & Eisenbrandt LLP. Miller was acquitted of 59 felony charges that stemmed from a May 2006 indictment that claimed he had run a “fraudulent real estate machine.” He still faces sentencing, however, for convictions from a December 2008 trial on charges in a related second indictment. Morris, who was not involved in the 2008 trial, said he sees several areas to appeal the convictions." Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

Olathe Rehabs Foreclosed, Abandoned Houses : "OLATHE, Kan. -- Olathe started a new program Tuesday where it will purchase foreclosed or abandoned houses, rehab them and sell them to qualified families or use them as rental properties. Olathe spokesman Tim Danneberg said the program is run by the Olathe Housing Services Division and will use federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program dollars to purchase the houses.
The city will take applications from families interested in renting or purchasing homes. The city said qualified applicants must meet income guidelines. The guidelines of the programs state 25 percent of families in the program must have income of less than 50 percent of the metropolitan area average income, and the remaining families must have income less than 120 percent of the median. Besides meeting income guidelines, families interested in being involved in the program are required to attend a home owner training program and pass a criminal, credit and background investigation."
Seems like a great housing. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.
