  • A Short Guide to Google Plus and the first 18 steps to get you started on G+

A Short Guide to Google Plus and what you should start doing first:

    What is Google+?
Google+ has been referred to as a social networking service. Think of it as a part Facebook, part Linkedin, part Twitter, and part Pinterest all rolled into a Search Engine. It is an interactive platform where voices may be shared and heard. Although it launched way after Facbook, Twitter and Linkedin, it is the fastest growing social media platform. Many people have been using parts of Google Plus for a few years. These parts include Youtube, Google News, Gmail and Picasa.

Many Google Plus is like Facebook but offers more functionality and is significantly more robust.

How does Google Plus compare? Think of it this way:

    • Facebook is for checking in and keeping up with, friends, family, and work associates.
    • Twitter is for surface quick updates on events you’re involved in or subject matter you care about.
    • Google+ is for people who share the same interests. It is interest-based. It's about finding new people and them finding you based on your interests. Interest could be a hobby, school attended, a webinar or a community you live in.

    How Google Plus Work?
Before you dive into Google Plus lets get the Google Plus lingo down.  Words you should know:
G+: G+ is the abbreviated form of Google Plus.
POSTS: You have a stream of "posts" just like you do in Facebook.
YOUR CIRCLES: With Facebook, you have "friends." With Google+ you have "your circles".
CIRCLING: In Facebook you "follow" someone. In Google+ you add them to a "your circles." Circles are all about organizing the people you "follow" and "share" with by interests (for example; gardening, photography, cooking, etc). When you have something to share, you select the circles you want that "post" to feed to—perhaps all of your circles or just one in particular. It's targeted communication made easy!
ADD YOU BACK: When you "circle" someone, they will be notified. And if they are interested in what you're all about, they'll likely "Add You Back"—meaning they want to see your stuff, too.
+1: If you like someone's post, you can "like" it by hitting "+1". +1’s on G+ are not saved in the +1 folder on your G+ profile. Those +1’s are reserved for web pages that you have +1’d.
PING: If you're looking for a fast, easy way to start communicating live with your contacts, you can "Ping" them. This is much like instant messaging.
HANGOUT: And then there are the Hangouts—super coolness! Think video chatting like Skype, iChat, Facetime—but conveniently located right there in your Google+ window. You can Hangout with one or up to 9 friends live at one time. Your Hangouts can be be kept private or go live with an "Air" broadcast (streamed live and then uploaded to YouTube).

What Stuff Do They See? What Stuff Do I See?
If you are out there posting, only the Circles you select your post to post to will be able to view the post in their stream. For example, I know my networking friends are not interested about my daughter’s gymnastics so I'll leave that circle out when posting about my daughters gymnastic meets. I might share my daughter’s gymnastics with my close friends circle and my family circle. If I have an exceptionally cool post that I want to share with all of my Your Circles Circle and Extended Circles Circle. Now if my post is really beneficial to everyone, I might choose to make my post Public and shared with everyone on G+.

Like with Twitter, you can "follow" or "circle" anyone you want. Whether you see posts from them depends on which circles they are posting to. Oh ... and you can post to a single person—much like "messaging" someone in Facebook—but it shows up in their stream rather than in a dedicated message window. This is where you want to be careful. You don't want to accidentally send a private message to everyone by clicking Public.

    What Makes G+ More Robust?

The cool features in G+ are:
LOCAL: Click this button and you can find and rate local business. This could become a powerhouse tool. Take your tablet to the next restaurant you go to and review it on Google Local. The more businesses we review, the more help our friends in our community.

EXPLORE: See what's hot on G+ by hitting the "Explore" button. You can then search by word or topic (such as "dairy-free" or whatever it is you are interested in exploring).
EVENTS: Create an invitation to an event (or dinner party or baby shower). Share photos from the event instantly in "Party Mode." Upload everyone's photos in one place after the event.
HANGOUTS: These video chats allow us to video conference easily with our family members who are on vacation during the holidays as well with our work associates on early Saturday mornings. Hangouts is “FREE”.

What Are Your The First Steps On G+?

Many people want to leap to steps 19 through 38 before the get through steps 1-18. If you jump the beginning steps you probably will lose the benefits of G+. Here are the first steps:

    1. Go to your profile and click the Edit Profile on the top.

    2. Add a Tagline. It could be a personal tagline or your business tagline.

    3. Add an introduction. The first 7 lines are very important. State what you’re looking to do like looking to network, connect with customers or gain clients.  Add a link in the introduction and add your keywords (the words that you want people to use to find you on Google).

    4. Add your Bragging Rights. I know this is funny, but statistically, people will view your Tagline and Bragging Rights before they’ll read a long introduction.

    5. Add your occupation(s). Again this is keyword rich so being cutesy isn’t advisable if you want people to find you. If you are Cosmetologist, state that. Don’t state, I improve peoples skin, unless you think you will get more traffic with these keywords. Choosing the right Keywords are important for generating traffic. Sometimes adding or deleting an S at the end can make the difference in thousands of visitors. Need help in choosing the right keywords for your occupation use this Keyword Tool - Google Keywords.

    6. Add your employment. You will find that people will circle you because you have shared the same employments. Connect with lost work friends.
    7. Add places you have lived. Like employment, people will connect with you because you have lived in the same places.

    8. Add Emails. Add every email public email that you use. Because there maybe a hundred Smiths in Kansas City, some people choose to find you by the email you have on your business card. If that email is not on your G+ profile, there is a chance you will make your potential friend search a hundred Smiths to find you. I have found many people will give up after a few minutes and will never find you add you to their circles.

    9. Make your profile visible. If not, you are making it hard for people to find you and share important information.

    10. Add your other profiles from other accounts. Suggestions would be Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Pinterest and Plaxo for starters.

    11. Add Links at the bottom. Add your personal blog, your website(s), links to quotes and more.

    12. Post Photos to the Photos tab on your G+ profile.  At least a personal pic and a banner pic(s). A profile pic should be 250 x 250 pixels, a cover photo should be 940 x 180 pixels, and if you are old school like me you can use thumbnails instead of a cover photo. Thumbnail pics should be 110 x 110 pixels. Pictures are really good to have and are a big turnoff if you don’t have any on your G+ profile. I heard an interesting stat that nearly 50% of the people on G+ will not circle someone they don’t know personally if they don’t see a profile picture. I have one of my teenage sons playing around with pics in a gif format and they work really well on G+. I’ll have mine uploaded soon.

    13. Now that you have finished uploading photos, now upload a profile photo and a banner photo. The G+ photo requirements are listed in step 12.

    14. Go to the Circles Tab on the left and then to add a New Person Box. Add a New Person by name or email (ah, ah, you see where having your email on your profile is important?). Now find your friends and circle them in your Friends Circle (or whatever circle you want to add them to).

I would also like to connect with you on G+. Go to my profile and add me. Here is my profile: Chris Dowell and here is my business profile: Dowell Taggart Team (You can go to my profile and add me to a circle from there)
    15. Now that you have added a few friends, write a post. Go the Profile Tab on the left. Then go to the Share What’s New Box and start writing. You can click the icons to the right and add a picture, video or link. Now below, add the circle with your friends. Now just click Share and now you have shared your new post with your friends.

That is how easy it is to share content on G+.
    16. Now go to the Hangouts Tab and start a Hangout with your friends. This is fun. I introduced this to my 6 year old daughter and she would rather Hangout with me than call me on the phone. The Hangout feature on Android Apps is awesome.

Go to the Hangout Tab on the left and click on it (The Hangout Tab may be in a sub tab - You can rearrange the tabs to suit your preference). Now click on the Start a Hangout Tab on the upper right.

A popup window will open. You can name your Hangout (since this is your first you might name it 1st Hangout or Testing). Make sure the box to enable Hangouts on Air is unchecked (if it is checked, people can pop in). Now click or add the friends you want to hangout with and start a conversation.

Cool isn’t it? The faster the connection the more seamless the hangout will appear. Did you notice all of the tabs on top. Play around with them. I bet you can guess which one is my daughters favorite.

Thinking about hosting or want to find some Hangouts, go to: http://gphangouts.com/

    17. Now you can start circling more friends. You can start by using the search option in G+ to find friends. You can also use this cool tool to find friends with rated  interest or in the same geographic area: http://findpeopleonplus.com/

If you would like to find the Top People, use this website: Top G+ People

    18. Now you’re ready for your second post. Try using these G+ shortcuts:

Hopefully this helps you get started on G+.  Here is an helpful infographic regarding G+:

Need any help, lets connect via a Hangout. I will be sharing some G+ content on G+. Feel free to share and of course of course +1 it, if you like.

  • The 20 reasons why many people think Google Plus is a Ghost Town are . . .

The 20 reasons why many people think Google Plus is a Ghost Town are . . .

Nearly every day I hear or read something about Google Plus being a ghost town. After looking at their Google Plus account and I can understand why.

If you think Google Plus is a ghost town, here maybe some reasons you it is a ghost town. Although I have thousands of people who have circled me on G+ and have found some great conversations as well as some great friends, many people think it is a ghost town. As an early adopter of Google Plus and having managed several Google Plus pages, I have found Google Plus to be anything of a Ghost Town. Sure, I will agree with you it isn’t where Facebook is today, but given that Google Plus is just barely over a year old and Facebook is nearly 8 years old, Google Plus has made some huge strides in its first year.

Here are 20 reasons why you may think G+ is a ghost town:

    1. You share your nudity art on the public stream, rather than to a circle that accepts nudity art. Children are on G+ and you have a responsibility to keep your content from ending up in the wrong hands. I know a few friends that have blocked individuals because their friends kept sending nudity art and they didn’t want their kids to accidentally pick up their phones and see the nudity art.

    2. You share stereotypical post. This is a new century and people don’t like generalizations about Races. Don’t share post calling out entire classes of people over behaviors you don’t like, instead of just one individual. Sharing stereotypical post over race, creed or color, will always get you blocked quickly by most of the G+ community.

    3. You believe that spamming your issues on popular post is your calling. Spamming is when someone comes across a popular discussion thread, proceeds to place a link to either an advertisement or to their special interest in that thread, piggybacking on its popularity for their own agenda. Some network marketers, political pundits and small business owners like doing this to gain traffic to their website. Spamming will get you blocked quickly. I’ll share some awesome SEO information at the end of this post.

    4. You believe that your religion gives you an upper hand on the world’s problems. Because you believe you have the answers you preach and condemn those with opposing views. Rather than preach to people who haven’t asked to preach to and risk being blocked, share your message to religious-specific circles where people of like minds can discuss their faiths privately.

    5. During a verbal assault you go crazy and won’t quit until you have the last word. Debate is sometimes a lost art, and when faced with disagreement, anger often ensues, leading to unpleasant back and forth insult or worse. Learn how to agree to disagree. Public verbal assaults will get you blocked fast.

    6. You share opinion articles to meet your personal agenda without digging in to make sure the article is truthful. Although  Google allows everyone to post links to outside content, you should at least fact-check prior to posting a link to irrefutable proof that eating Pizza is good for diabetics.

    7. You believe the women of G+ are there for your ogling and visual entertainment. Women don’t want your filthy private messages and suggestive images. Before textually or visually accosting someone on the forum, ask yourself if your mother or sister would appreciate receiving your content?

    8. You feel it is your mission to cut out the jokes and sarcasm on G+. Before you add a inconsiderate comment and then run off to report their joke and comment that you did not consider funny, consider intent, not result. Cool off. If you’re the only one who found the joke offensive, just brush it off before you post that comment. If you don’t you will likely find yourself quite lonely on G+.

    9. You complain about Google + and you share post comparing G+ to Facebook. OK, we get it. If you don’t like it, go away. Negativity on G+ will get you blocked very quickly. Nobody wants to hear that noise. Have you thought that maybe your post are driving away your friends. If you don’t like to be a leader and use G+, leave. You can always follow everyone when they jump ship and come to G+.

    10. You present yourself as a technology guru and feel you must share technical post or comments that you have no idea about. If your post and comments start leading people astray, you might find your confused followers blocking you. You need to remember that technology is always changing and if you don’t know what you are talking about, it’s fine, but pretending that you’re an expert is dangerous to unsuspecting users. Don’t do it.

    11. OK, you have circled me, but won’t let me see your profile, or better yet, you have not completed a G+ profile. Since G+ is for the purpose of discovering like-minds of interest, people will want to circle you back in the appropriate circle. If they can’t determine, they may not circle you back. When a person circles others, while not sharing their own information, is considered bad-form. Many G+ users  lacking patience might block you for it.

    12. Someone blocks you, and you find it offensive....you and start sharing post about someone blocking you and how rude you think it is. What this will actually get is more attention, but now for the right reasons. You will find more people blocking you. Some people will block you because they’ll believe that if one person blocked you, you must have given them a reason to block you, so they will block you. Other people will block you because they don’t approve of your middle school childish behavior.

    13. You are labeled as an Expert, Pundit, Politician, Writer or Celebrity but will not answer or comment on other G+ users. G+ is not one way communication and if you don’t comment or answering G+ users, many G+ users will figure that either you are too good for them or a stand-in. Many of the writers who say that “G+ is a Ghost Town” fall into this category. G+ users who fall into this category haven’t figured out that G+ is built for 2-way communication, not one-way communication.

    14. You, simply cannot, or will not, admit a mistake, even if you’re proved incorrect. You feel you are perfect, and above reproach. When other G+ users feel that on controversial post that you haven’t left your ego out of the post, you will get blocked. When you are wrong admit it. It is not illegal to be wrong, just admit it. If you can’t admit mistakes you will get blocked.

    15. You, regardless of your intellect, feel the only way to get noticed and followed on G+ is to display cleavage at every opportunity. If you want to be respected for your mind, show me that, and not your goodies.

16 You, despite all reason, logic and excuses, are essentially just a jerk. Yep, these people are everywhere so why would be surprised that they are on G+.

    17. You’re anti-social. Unlike a jerk who most people believe have to practice, an anti social person is just made that way. They have few friends in real life and try to disguise their personality as witty and charming. When they can’t manipulate a person to what they want, they become very arrogant and angry. If you’re anti social you may get blocked by people fast.

    18. You haven’t taken advantage of the really cool tools within G+ like Google Hangouts and Google Search. Did you know you can have a video conference with up to 9 of your friends for “Free”. If you haven’t checked out where the people are at, you may think G+ is a ghost town. Be an adventurer and checkout the cool tools G+ has for its user.

    19. You have added dull friends and have made a judgment that all of G+ is dull and a ghost town. Before you make such a judgement, look at yourself. Maybe it is you and not G+. G+ is designed for you to connect with people that have a similar interest as yourself. If you think G+ is dull and a ghost town, maybe look at the people you have circled or your interest. With millions of people on G+, I find it hard to believe that all of them are boring and don’t frequent G+ frequently.

    20. You post as often as a blue moon and then make a judgement that G+ is a ghost town. I actually got this idea from an author who commented that G+ is a ghost town, but he had only shared two public post in the past 45 days. Start by commenting on other people’s post. If you share quality content, people will find you. I have found that G+ is anything but a ghost town.

Google+ is a wonderful place to meet others, to learn, to share experiences, and develop your personal brand. If you fit into one of these 17 behaviors, you might think G+ is a ghost town. Don’t worry though. It is not too late to change. Start by avoiding the the above behaviors, keeping an open mind to other points of view, and not hiding behind your profile. In no time flat, you will develop a rocking stream of content, and thousands of circles from other users. You might even meet the next customer or client on Google Plus.

With the new changes to Google Search lately, G+ will play a major role with small business owners with ranking high on Google. If that is important, maybe you should checkout G+.

Earlier I mentioned in the spamming behavior section that I would share some important SEO information. Here it is: The new Google algorithm that helps determines where your website is ranked on a Google Search has changed. Yes, backlinks are important but it is not the most important anymore. The new algorithm looks at the attached G+ profile of your website and looks at the social interaction. If there is no attached G+ profile or little social interaction, there is a good chance your website will rank lower. In addition, Google takes into account the +1’s your website and attached G+ site get to help rank your website. Obviously, the more +1’s is good because Google figures it is a more important website.

Just remember G+ is still growing and should not be compared to 8 year old Facebook.

    Lets connect on G+!

  • The 30 reasons why you need to use Google Plus are (G+) . . .

The 30 reasons why you need to use Google Plus are:
(I actually have 75 reasons, but they get very highly technical).

    1. Google, NOT Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest or Instagram, dominates the web search. By being on Google Plus, you increase your odds of being found on Google by influencing your followers and your followers of followers searches. This is why it is important to have a large number of customers following you. This is called Google Plus Your World.

    2.  Google Plus behaviors go into the Google ranking algorithm for your web pages. Post consistently with your keywords and Google will most likely take notice with its search results.

    3. Google added Google +1 as a social confirmation of sites. Google rewards sites with more +1’s. Start a campaign of +1 sites and hopeful people will reciprocate.

    4. Google Plus is integrated with tools you may already use. You are using Google plus if you use tools like Gmail, Youtube, Picasa, Maps, Local, Blogger, News,  Drive, Google Now, Android, and Chrome.

    5. If you complete your profile on Google Plus and make it public, you’re helping Google find you easier. Most people do not know this but your Google Plus profile is indexed on Google so it is important to add your important keywords on your profile.

    6. Google Plus is associated with the top browser, Chrome, and top mobile phone platform, Android. Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook do not have their own browser and mobile phone platform. Think about the possibilities in the future.

    7. Google Plus is the social layer of Google Searches and it will get bigger. People will trust their friends over a website review or from a review from someone they don’t know. Lets say a customer pulled your company up on Google and they saw a review from a friend of theirs. Statically, most people will read the review from their friend before they click to go to your website. Reviews by your friends is important. In addition, you can share content on Google Search with your Google Plus friends.

    8. Circles are a natural way of managing, sharing, and sorting through friends on Google Plus. Google was built with circle  has a fundamental principal. On Facebook and Twitter this is an afterthought that has many holes. Google encourages you to share information to certain friends. You might not share the same information with your employees as you would with your family or your rugby buddies, right? It is easier and safer to share content on Google Plus.

    9. You truly have control over your data. You can choose who sees your data. You can also make it public or share with extended circles. You can even download ALL of your data, pics and videos and delete your Google Plus account at anytime. What, you can export all of your data from Google Plus? Try that with Facebook and Twitter and let me know how it goes.

    10.  Safer photo tagging on Google Plus. Have you ever had an embarrassing picture of you or post about you tagged and added to your profile on Facebook? Maybe it was mistake because the Facebook recognition facial software was incorrect or friend mislabled you. First, G+ does not utilize the facial software because they have found that over 35% of the tags on Facebook are incorrect. Also on G+, you will receive a notification when you are tagged and you can immediately remove the picture and or post not just from your wall but from G+. You can also set it up to review ALL tags of you before they are posted. On Facebook you can only control what is on your wall, not an embarrassing picture that is shared amongst friends.

    11. Google Plus has an easy profile setup. If you’re using gmail, Youtube, Drive, News, Chrome or any of the other programs in Google, Google already has most of your data.

    12. Higher visibility ranking on Google Search. By having a completed profile and business page, you will rank higher on a public Google Search for the the keywords you have used on your profiles. This is different than the Google Search reasons given in 1 and 2.

    13. Google Plus has single post muting.  Have you ever had a post on Facebook get off target, or there are too many comments. You can mute that post on Google Plus. During the election periods I use this option frequently on G+.

    14. No contest or games allowed on G+ Business pages. Google is looking to making relationships more authentic. Does having 2000 likes on your Facebook Page due to a contest or an ad campaign result in more business? NO. Statistically, more likes does not increase into more sales. Google has found that more engaging authentic relationships does result in more sales. Use the tools within Google Plus to connect with the right influencers, customers and potential clients. Did you know that less than 18% of the people who have liked your Facebook Page will even see your content? Statistically, I'm being very generous because many business people who have a Facebook Business page would love to reach a 10% audience. That just is not the case on Google Plus with your friends, customers and clients choosing whether or not to read your content.

    15. Google Plus has the best search component. It makes sense since Google is a search engine company, doesn’t it? Search Sparks (data from AP and national news), friends, post and much more.  Have you ever tried a search on Facebook?  Might as well go to Bing, right?

    16. G+ has a better mobile application on Android. The Android app is fast and allows you to do many of the fun stuff. Have you tried Facebook on a mobile device. It is slow, a data hog, and is missing many parts that are on the web version.

    17. Insanely cool group chat and Hangout feature. With Google Plus you can have a video conference with 9 other people at once and also have a group chat. Include charts, pics and videos. You could host a private chat room and talk about your product or have a chat room with your sales team.

    18. Google Plus features a better picture gallery that can instantly upload from your mobile device. Pictures are saved as private but you can edit them and share to the world very easily.

    19. Facebook is in 2nd place with sharing videos. Google is # 1. Upload your videos to G+, Youtube or Google Hangouts on Air. Google makes it easy to add and share videos. Hope it makes sense that Google will find your videos easier, right?

    20. Easy to research and add friends who are not on G+. Have you ever tried to research or add a customer on Facebook who was not on Facebook? It is next to impossible. It is easy to do on G+. Just add their email. Google will try to auto complete the rest of the information if they are not on G+. Go ahead and add them to a circle, like your customer circle. Anytime you share content on G+ with your customer who is not on G+ they will not see a post but rather an email in their inbox. Isn’t that cool and a great way to deliver a monthly newsletter or a blowout sale?

    21. No Friend Request fatigue like on Facebook. Google Plus has implemented circles. Add whom you want, when you want. People who have circled you, but you haven’t circled them back, can still see your public post.

    22. Track the hottest topics and trends on Google Search or Google Plus in the explore tab.

    23. Create an event and share it with your friends or a circle. You can even have the event added to their calendar.

    24. Facebook has Business Pages, Google has business pages, local pages and Google Maps pins. Google makes it easier for businesses to be found. Did you know that Google Local and Maps is used more than the Yellow Pages? In addition, over 80% of the business searches are done on mobile devices. Something Google has mastered quite well.

    25. Google Plus makes it easy to bookmark a site. You can either +1 a site and it will be stored on your Google Plus Profile under the +1 Tab or you can share a site to a empty circle. I have created a Bookmarks circle and share interesting post and web pages to that circle.

    26. You can save searches on Google Plus. Save people searches, sparks searches or G+ post searches. You can also save searches saved about your business, yourself personally or competitors. I have over a 100 searches saved and frequent them during my down time. Great way to stay on top of things. How do you do this on Facebook?

    27. Share Google Docs and Drive documents with your G+ followers. You can also collaborate projects at the same time with real time sharing.

    28. Google Plus has an analytics tool second to none via Google Analytics. In Facebook, a limited analytics is only available on Facebook Pages.

    29. By using Google Plus, your Google Search will be customized. This means that you should receive more relevant results for your searches. Find something of real interest and share it with your circles or the Public right from your Google Search.

    30. Google has a spam detection plan. Google has in and out servers that are seperated by a spam detecting server which means your computer and mobile devices will run much, much smoother. I'm not going to go into much detail about Facebook other than to say that I have seen poor computer benchmark test showing how antivirus software quarantines data from Facebook's poor design.

  • What are the 30 reasons why you need to use Google Plus? What Are Your The First Steps On G+?

Glad to see so many people at the Google Plus event yesterday.

Did you know that Kansas City is not even ranked in the Top 100 in daily G+ users. With a population well within the top 50, that concerns me. Cities like Atlanta, Seattle, Chicago, San Antonio, Austin, Raleigh, Tampa, Buffalo, Columbus, Boise and Albuquerque are way ahead of Kansas City regarding using Google Plus.

My Google friends say that it is because they have moved their G+ team here in Kansas City to the local Google Fiber department and do not have a staff to help the community with Google Plus. Google has teams all throughout the nation helping businesses get on board with Google Plus and many have seen success with tools like Local and Business Pages. Before most people get there in Kansas City, they need to take some baby steps.

I have had a few meetings in the Fiber Lounge and was rather shocked that most of the marketing department was not on G+. Even the equipment in the lounge and fiber center are not setup for Google Plus. Most of the employees in Kansas City have been hired to reach the maximum neighborhoods for the Google Fiber Launch. Before Google Fiber was announced in Kansas City, Google had a team of 5 Google Plus experts here.

I have been sent quite a few emails regarding Google Plus and I would like to answer some questions that Meghan from Google could not answer yesterday.

    1) First, I have participated in 6 seminars at the Google Fiber Lounge and they have ran smoothly. In the previous seminar both the microphone and backup microphone were broke. Meghan had to improvise with what she had. The company who runs the building is not run by Google. Google does not run the audio and visuals, either. A marketing company was hired by Google and was assisted with the resources that the community wanted to use. As you can see the resources are limited.  I thought it would be cool to have the seminar in the Lounge. Google is investing 800 million dollars into Kansas City. Bigs things are coming.

We had actually had a Hangout planned but was not able to keep the feed going.

Once the launch passes, the G+ team will be able to concentrate on G+ more. I feel that we need to get 100 people using G+ ASAP. After reading this you will agree why Google Plus.

    2) Here are observations that the Google Plus Team and myself noticed from request to attend the Google Business Seminar:

    1. Over 75% of the people do not understand the SEO and search benefits of being on Google Plus.
    2. Only 5 people out of 140 had completed profiles on Google Plus.
    3. Over 70% did not have pictures on their Google Plus profile.
    4. More than 80% did not have links to their websites and blogs on their Google Plus profile.
    5. Few people understand Google Local. Only 8 out 140 people had a Google Local profile for their business.
    6. Less than 6% of the people had attended or hosted a Hangout in the past month.
    7. Most people’s G+ account could not be found on Google because profile was incomplete, emails are not entered, or contact information is missing. Many did not even have 1 keyword in their profile.
    8. Few people understand what their Google ID is. Matter a fact, only 5 people entered their correct Google Plus Id on the request.

As you can see, I wanted to keep the seminar very basic and not introduce advanced information. Only 6 people who attended the seminar had a complete profile with links to their other social media sites and post content regularly. If you want to use G+ correctly, start with the basics. Don’t jump to step 20 before you do steps 1-19.

As indicated in the description of the event:
What happens if I'm a master? That is great. First, this is an opportunity to connect with the G+ team. Second, you have an opportunity to build your circles. Third, you will come out of this event with a few golden nuggets.

This seminar was not aimed at masters.

    3) Meghan is a team manager. She is not a Spokesperson for Google.

Because Meghan is not a spokesperson, she is not allowed to present why to use Google Social Media Tools, a SEO strategy, or the Benefits of using Google Products. Also, there over over a few thousand people working on the Google Plus Project. It is hard for one single person to know all aspects of the Google Plus Project.

Google reaches out to SEO people, Bloggers and social media managers who are not Google employees through testing of products, seminars, hangouts and webinars. Sorry, but that is how publicly traded companies operate. They can’t ruffle the feathers of the FTC or the SEC. In addition, all subject matter that is not about the HOW of the company needs to be reviewed by an attorney.

I am a certified beta tester for Google and can share my data and knowledge about Google products, unless I am currently testing a product or service and have a signed confidentiality form to not disclose confidential information.

    4) Who do you want to connect to on Google Plus?

    • The networker (Social Butterfly): one who has the biggest contact list and found on all platforms. He or she who knows everybody and everybody knows him or her.
    • The opinion leader (Thought Leader): one who can become the best ambassador of a brand. He or she has built a strong authority in his or her field by based on credibility. Their messages are most often commented on and retweeted.
    • The discoverer (Trendsetter): one who is always the first to use a new platform.  Constantly on the lookout for new trends, they become the “hub” in the sector.
    • The sharer (Reporter): one who distributes information to the bloggers to journalists through the specialized webzines. He or she usually amplify messages.
    • The user (Everyday Customer): one that represents the regular customer. He or she does not have a network as large as the networker, but his or her network remains equally important.

Checkout my list of "What to start first on Google Plus to see my list of people I recommend in Kansas City to follow.

    5) What are the 30 reasons why you need to use Google Plus?

    6) A Short Guide to Google Plus and what you should start doing first:

Many people want to leap to steps 18 through 36 before the get through steps 1-17.

  • What does Kansas City have that most cities would love to have?

What title does Kansas City have that most cities would love to have?

Some people would say "Best Barbecue". And most would agree that Kansas City is #1 here.

Others would say "Most Fountains". Outside of Rome, Kansas City is #1 with the most fountains.

If you said "Best Architecture Firms". You wouldn't be far off. Did you know that some of the most sought after architecture firms are from Kansas City?

If you're an outdoor lover, you would say "Most Parks". The fact is Kansas City developed the first master-plan city park system. Kansas City is full of parks and still boasts one of the largest parks in the nation.

If you're an entrepreneur you would probably say, "Its entrepreneurial spirit." The late Ewing Marion Kauffman not only brought Major League Baseball to Kansas City, but he also started the Kauffman Foundation. The Kauffman Foundation is often referred as the "World's Largest Foundation Devoted to Entrepreneurship".

If you have read a recent government report you would probably say that Kansas City boast one of the "most productive work forces in the nation".

Many people would argue that Kansas City is the "Best Little Big City" in the nation.
Kansas City has a NASCAR race track.
    A pro football team.
    A pro baseball team.
    A pro soccer team
A top notch performing arts venue like the Kauffam Center for Preforming Arts
A World Class Museum like the Nelson Atkins Museum.
    And an improved zoo.

I don't think you would be off if you even said that most would love to be like Kansas City because we're in the "Center of the U.S.", our "Rich History", our "Jazz and Blues", or our "Sweet Personality of its Residents".

You could find some great data supporting all of these claims and titles.

    These are all great answers.

If you have said anyone of these answers you would probably be correct most of the time.

But none of those are the #1 title that most cities would love to have. Any more guesses?

So what is the #1 title that Kansas City has that most cities would love to have, you ask?

The world would love to have the "Technology War Title". Yep, if you didn't know it, there is a technology war going on here in our backyards.

Think about it. We once had one large mobile phone company in Kansas City called Sprint. In fact, it was headquartered in a large nearly 4 million square foot office park. Supposedly the largest single company office park in the nation.

Then Kansas City had a couple companies called Garmin and Cerner pop up.

Now we have the big tech companies in our backyards. That is right. Apple, Microsoft and Google have all decided to have a physical presence in Kansas City and I don't mean just selling us Kansas Citians products over the internet or through a Best Buy or Microcenter store. I mean they have actually opened up stores. How many cities can say that they have all three of the power technology companies in their cities?

Apple opened a store. Then another store. Yep, we have two stores in Kansas City. A few cities can say they have an Apple store, but few can say they have two Apple stores.
    Apple Store

Training Room in the Microsoft Store at the Oak Park Mall
Located in a suburban Kansas City mall, Microsoft opened its 20th store in the nation in the biggest and probably best shopping mall outside of the Mall of America. With 23 stores nationwide, Kansas City is in a lucky group.

Sure, Apple and Microsoft having a presence in the same city is a big deal, but add Google into the picture and this is truly amazing.

Not to be outdone, Google chose Kansas City out of 19,429 U.S. cities to to install their first Google Fiber service. That is like you personally winning a 300 million dollar power ball ticket. Not only is the Google Fiber service amazing, it will be delivered to households at a very reasonable price. Like a third of the cost of Verizon's fiber with like 3 times more service.

The service is so amazing I have seen representatives from Microsoft, Apple, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner; as well as, a host of other technology companies at technology conferences hosted by Google. These reps are BUG EYED as they learn about Google's plans for Kansas City.

The tech world and people outside of Kansas City would really like to have the tech battle that is brewing in Kansas City in their backyards. I hope the people from Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri understand how big this is before the September 9th deadline comes.

Kansas City is changing and making some history. Will you be a part of it?

If you live in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, you need to see what all of the talk is about.
    Checkout Google Fiber.

Lets do this for Kansas City.

Don't worry if you live in the suburbs like me, if it catches on, it will get to us.

If you would like to see how Google can help your business, consider attending the next Google Business Seminar.

In the meantime, I'll post more about the technology war in future post. I

  • Google Plus is a Hit in my Book! Checkout these 14 Google+ Resources

I have been using Google Plus for a few days now and really like the direction of Google +. It is kinda a cross between Facebook and Twitter. Although many people have said that it is competing against Facebook, I think it will give Twitter more competition at the beginning.

Although the Google Plus creators have said that the business edition will be coming out this fall, I think it will be out much earlier. The applications for being included in the business edition stopped yesterday.

Google Plus will be very beneficial for sales people whether you're a Business to Business or Business to Consumer salesperson. I look forward to the exciting changes that have been added the past week; as well as, the changes being planned for the near future.

Conclusion: Google Plus is a bold and dramatic attempt at social. The ability to view updates from specific groups started with Facebook but has been perfected with this Google project. That is right, project. Google calls Google Plus a “project” rather than a “product” because it is a work in progress — they don’t want users to think that they just released a final product.
Overall, Google+ is solid and I really like its speed. It is NOT a Facebook killer or a game-changer, yet! I think Google learned a lesson with Google Wave and is releasing Google Plus like they did Gmail.
The winner of the Google, Facebook and Twitter war will be who can keep users coming back everyday for the months ahead. We know Facebook can do. Does Google have the project to do it? I think so.
If you're just starting with Google Plus, start slow. You may have made some mistakes with Facebook and Twitter. This is your time to start new groups, interact with new people and create a social media plan that works for your business.

  • Want to improve the economy? Google says demand better broadband

Want to improve the economy? Then demand better broadband. The National Broadband Plan attempts to create a path from broadband policies to economic recovery. Policymakers at all levels of government, though, need to watch municipal efforts such as those in Kansas City, Kan. because it’s at the local level where economic recovery has a fighting chance to ripple out through counties and then states.

Google has said one of its main goals with its gigabit network giveaway is to create a test bed for all kinds of wonderful technology apps, but independent of Google’s intent, expect the municipally owned Kansas City network to also act as a test bed for showing how broadband can jumpstart local economic development. From the outset, Kansas City’s government, civic leaders and stakeholders pursued this deal from the perspective of “What can you do with a gigabit?” to affect various business and personal economic outcomes.

  • How Can EVERY Olathe, Kansas Real Estate Agent Be #1???

How Can EVERY Olathe, Kansas Real Estate Agent Be #1???

    Dear Dowell Taggart Team;

We get lots of postcards and flyers from Realtors hoping we'll list with them when we're ready to sell our Olathe home.  It seems like EVERY agent is claiming to be #1!  What's the deal?
    -Skeptical Olathe homeowner

    Dear Skeptical Olathe Homeowner,
Amazing isn't it?  And each of those Olathe real estate agents is under obligation to be able to support their claims of being #1, but here's the deal....

Numbers can be made to dance the jive if you present them in a way that makes them tell a filtered down "story" the way you want.  There's dozens of different ways you can present home sales data.... a time frame, a specific location, style of home, type of home, price range, total volume, total number of sides.  Each of these can be a path to #1 claims.

Pick a small enough time frame...Presto!  The real estate agent is #1!

Pick a small enough price bracket...BAM!!

You guessed it, the real estate agent is #1 again!  Pick a small enough style of home...ranch home split level home, cul-de-sac homes and presto, again the real estate agent is #1 again.  Is it number of sales by total dollar value or number or number of transactions?

    Two (or more) #1s!  What?

Is it number of listings on the market?  Number of buyers brought to the area?  Number of relocation clients to Olathe from Wichita, St. Louis or Omaha?  The number of blog post on the real estate blog platform, Active Rain?  Who has the most Yelp reviews?  Who bought the best Better Business Bureau rating? And the story goes on and on . . .

Lets look at the facts. First, Olathe, Kansas home buyers typically look at multiple areas. Not just one specific neighborhood. So it is important to hire an Olathe, Kansas real estate agent who knows the whole area and is an expert in multiple areas.

    Makes sense, doesn’t it!

Second, 88% of the Olathe, Kansas home buyers start their home search on the Internet. So it makes sense that if you’re hiring a Kansas City real estate agent they have a top presence on the number 1 search engine, Google, right?

Lets take a look at the top Olathe, Kansas real estate search term on Google: Olathe, Kansas Real Estate. Which Olathe, Kansas real estate agent is really #1?

Looks like the Dowell Taggart Team has the #1 Olathe, Kansas real estate agent website, doesn't it?

Don’t take our word for it. Do your own Google search.

My business partner is the #1 ranked, right-handed, gray haired, 2007 Toyota 4Runner driving Realtor that lives in his home...Who cares?

So take the claims with a grain of salt.  When you're ready to pick your REALTOR®, do your own research. Create a list of the top 3 real estate agents, then interview them.

Find the right real estate agent that fits you.

Great online marketing, great customer service, personalities you can work with are just a few factors to take into account.

Do you want the number 1 ranked Realtor that sells ranch homes in Olathe, Kansas, in the price range of $124,679 to $147,839....?

YES...As long as that fits YOUR selling profile.

And if you're looking for a Olathe real estate team whose only goal is to be YOUR #1, then give The Dowell Taggart Team of RE/MAX Premier Realty a call.  We offer the no hassle, no pressure, just high quality marketing kind of approach to real estate! We deliver results because we provide a service that ALL other Olathe real estate agents strive to provide.

  • Kansas City, KS., will be the first city to receive Google’s experimental high-speed Internet network

According to blog post on Mashables, Kansas City, KS., will be the first city to receive Google’s experimental high-speed Internet network. The announcement Wednesday ends a year-long process that sparked a heated nationwide competition between more than 1,000 U.S. communities.

The search giant first announced its intention to build an experimental fiber network with speeds 100 times faster than the typical U.S. Internet connection — an astounding 1 GB per second. Google’s goal wasn’t to become an Internet service provider (ISP) that would compete with the likes of Comcast but rather was to help push broadband and Internet delivery forward.

After Google’s initial announcement, dozens of cities started their own campaigns to persuade Google to bring its high-speed network to their cities. Most famously, Topeka, Kansas, briefly changed its name to Google, Kansas, but other cities went to great lengths to get Google’s attention.

Now, a full year later, the technology titan has chosen its winner: Kansas City, which has already signed a development agreement with Google to start the project.

So why did Google choose Kansas City, a city with a population of 145,000? Here is the company’sexplanation:
“In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City. We’ll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future.”
Great news for Kansas City, Kansas!

  • Help bring Google Fiber to Overland Park, Kansas

If you have been in a cave the past week you may have missed the news about the state capital of Kansas. It is no longer, or for at least the month of March, Topeka, Kansas. The mayor of Topeka has started a marketing campaign in order to whoo over the new Google Fiber. Part of his marketing campaign is to change the name of Topeka to Google for the month of March.

This may or may not work.

According to Google they are looking for people to nominate their city.

Overland Park has been included in a short list of possible cities and being a Google Fiber city.

Overland Park is creating a advertising program of getting people to complete the Google nomination form.

If you would like a Google fiber optic trial in Overland Park, please complete the Google request.

  • How can Overland Park, Kansas compete with Google, KS.?

If you haven't heard the big news in Topeka, KS., Then I don't know where you have been. The mayor of Topeka has changed the name of Topeka to Google for the month of March in hopes of being a guinea pig for Google's high speed internet service.

So for the month of March, the Capital of Kansas is Google, Kansas.

Sounds like a great marketing gimmick, doesn't it?

Overland Park, Kansas has been trying to lure Google also for the same service. I wonder what marketing gimmick the mayor of Overland Park, Carl Gerlach, is doing to lure Google.

  • Google Italy Executives Found Guilty Over Offensive Video

Google Executives Found Guilty Over Offensive Video:

In 2006, a person uploaded a video of a group of boys bullying a boy with down syndrome. Although this is a terrible act, the Italian courts make it worse. Four top Google representatives were sued in the Italian courts and were convicted.

The Google representatives did not post the video and when the video was brought to Google's attention the video was removed. The prosecutor claims that Google should never have allowed the video in the first place.
David Drummond, one of the Google representatives convicted, plans to appeal the verdict, summing it up nicely: “If individuals like myself and my Google colleagues who had nothing to do with the harassing incident, its filming or its uploading onto Google Video can be held criminally liable solely by virtue of our position at Google, every employee of any internet hosting service faces similar liability.”

To my knowledge the boys who uploaded the video where not prosecuted and the sad part is David is right. What kind of message does this send to companies, corporations, bloggers, social media experts and web designers? Will everyone be concerned about the social interaction? Will we be judged by what people say or post on our sites like Facebook, Ning and Blogger accounts?

There will always be immature individuals and they should be the ones to prosecuted for their actions. It sounds like many people don't understand that society has changed from a marketing and advertising society to a social that uses marketing and advertising with interaction society.
