Busy, busy weekend ahead for all of us in Kansas City....Outdoor fun, indoor fun, family fun! It’s all here for you in our very own Kansas City Metro!Kansas City Renaissance FestivalThe Kansas City Renaissance Festival offers a day like no other to eager visitors from across the Midwest. About 180,000 fans come to see the 16th century village each year where guests are invited to be a part of history whether it is learning a dance with the gypsies, (maybe Dan Henderson, Mr. KC Mortgage) assisting Bob the Incredible Juggler, shooting arrows with the infamous Black Archers or listening to Fairy Tales in the Enchanted Children's Realm."Dinosaurs Unearthed"The exhibit will explore the theory, supported by fossil discoveries in 1996, that some dinosaurs had feathers and were ancestors to modern birds. Several of the animated models, including a juvenile T. rex, have feathers. The exhibit also has five life-size reproductions of articulated dino skeletons, including one 62 feet long, (will that fit in my basement?) and more than 40 other fossil reproductions.Miami Heat vs. Oklahoma City ThunderAll-Stars Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant will meet in Kansas City on Oct. 8 when the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami HEAT tip off at Sprint Center. Friday, June 25
The Kansas City Power & Light District is hosting their third Downtown Art Annual event this weekend. The event will have a wide variety of artwork from local and regional artists for sale. It will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday and noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday. The Zeros, a 80's band, will also be playing a free show on the KC Live! Stage at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
Head out to Crosstown Station on Friday night for J’Adore Burlesque, which will feature performers including Gogo McGregor, Foxy LeFeelion, Mimi Leyu, Swifty Deeds and Greta Garter. This event promises to have games, prizes, smiling, laughter and titillation.
The 1980s favorite and highly quotable Ferris Bueller’s Day Off will be showing for free at the City Market at 9:00 p.m. You should definitely see this movie because life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.
The Great Lenexa Barbeque starts with over 200 contestants at the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (87th & Lackman Rd).
Saturday June 26Grab some delicious and nutritious locally grown produce at your local farmers' market. Farmers’ markets in the area include City Market, Brookside, Merriam, Shawnee, Overland Park, Platte City and Spring Hill. Blueberries, cherries, eggplant, green beans, peppers, peaches, plums, sweet corn, tomatoes and zucchini are in season, and therefore particularly delicious, right now.
Filmmakers up for a challenge this weekend can participate in One Night Stand, a 10-hour filmmaking contest hosted by the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City. The challenge is to shoot, edit and screen a short film in just ten hours. Anyone interested in participating in the challenge should bring $30 and this form (PDF) to the Just Off Broadway Theatre for registration at 9:00 a.m. Movie lovers are encouraged to attend the screening at 8:00 p.m. at the Just Off Broadway Theatre. Tickets are $5 at the door for IFCKC members and $10 for non-members.
Meteorologists are predicting that it’s going to be around 95 degrees on Saturday, and that’s before the humidity makes things that much more miserable. We can think of no better way to make the most of this situation than by attending an ice cream festival. The Ice Cream Dreamery festival will be taking place on Saturday at the Crown Center Square from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $5 for each individual person or $10 for a family of four, and proceeds of the event will go to the Children’s Place, which helps victims of child abuse, neglect and other trauma. The event will have family-fun live music, a tallest ice cream cone competition and more.
The Great American Family Campout is happening at Shawnee Mission Park. Go to the site for details: Great American Campout
Don't forget the Lenexa BBQ contest is still going on. Sunday, June 27Kansas City’s largest vintage car show will take place on Sunday at the Kansas City Art Institute campus from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Art of the Car Concours is a benefit for student scholarships at KCAI. This year’s event is featuring President Woodrow Wilson’s 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine, which has been restored to full working order. There will also be vintage motorcycles, bicycles, race cars and fire trucks in the show. Tickets are $12 each, or $10 if you buy them online in advance. Kids 10 and under are free.
The Duck Derby will take place at Brush Creek on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. benefiting Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center. Brush Creek will be flooded with racing rubber ducks competing for prizes that include concert tickets and one lucky duck will win $1,000,000. Ducks can be adopted for $5 each, or at discounted rates if you adopt multiple ducks. There will also be entertainment such as food vendors, live music, hair and face painting and inflatable play equipment.
