Fun on the 4th! Kansas City Riverfest 2010!

Fun on the 4th! Kansas City Riverfest 2010!

Head East, Fast Johnny Ricker, Radio Disney Rockin’ Roadcrew, Broadband, and the Sunflower Ragtime Orchestra....That’s a power-packed lineup!

What do these performers have in common? Good sounds, and good times! (Click on the link for the schedule.)

Kansas City Riverfest 2010! It’s gonna be awesome! Kansas City Riverfest is organized by Friends of the River, or FOR-KC.  Since 2002 FOR-KC, non-for profit, has brought great entertainment, family, friends, and fireworks together in an effort to promote the awareness and development of our riverfront.

And have a little good, clean fun!

In the mood for some good eats? How about Kansas City BBQ, corn dogs, falafel, ice cream and alligator sausage! Will they be serving the alligator sausage and ice cream together?

The Children’s Zone will be loaded with attractions, fun events, rides, interactive stuff! And with the $10 wristband, your kids will be able to enjoy the unlimited access to the rides! Rock climbing will be an extra charge....Yes, there will be a rock-climbing wall! Will I see you there?

Parking is a breeze! ADA accessible parking is available at both the the City Market and ATA bus stop at 3rd and Grand Avenue. Shuttle buses will be delivering from those lots directly to the Riverfest all day long! Parking is also available off of I-35 and Front Street, but the City Market parking may be the best bet.

Sponsors include Mazuma Credit Union, DST Systems, BNSF Railway, EventPros and so many more great companies that endorse our Riverfront development!

Come on out this weekend and see me there! I’ll be at the bandstand tomorrow evening, and then hitting all the attractions Sunday! Be safe, be smart, and drink plenty of water!

Staples and UPS have their Act Together - Great Customer Service - How does your company serve?
Last night after visiting Office Depot and Office Max for a blue tooth headset, I decided to surf the internet for stores in Kansas City who may have the particular blue tooth device I wanted.

I found the area stores, Best Buy and Staples, to have the blue tooth device I wanted. Noticing that Staples was $20.00 less expensive, I headed out to the Overland Park Staples.

Unforntunately, Staples was out of the blue tooth I wanted, but they offered a solution.

The assistant manager offered to have the blue tooth device shipped to my home the next day for no additional charges.

I told the assistant manager that it would be a deal if they delivered to my office.

I went ahead and purchased the blue tooth device and gave the assistant manager my office address.

Last night I talked to many friends and told them about my deal. Nobody believes me that Staples will have my new blue tooth device in my office.

Sure enough, when I walked into my office I had a UPS package sitting in my mailbox. It was the blue tooth device that I bought from Staples the night before.

To me that is service. What kind of service does your Kansas City business provide?

Did you know that Daylight Saving Time Saves Lives?
If you are like most people, you have been tired so far this week. many of us are adapting to the change of time I wanted to through out some facts.

Did you know that the Daylight Savings Time Saves Lives?

In 1975 the U.S. DOT conservatively identified a 0.7% reduction in traffic fatalities during Daylight Savings Time, and estimated the real reduction to be 1.5% to 2%.

In 1995 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimated a reduction of 1.2%, including a 5% reduction in crashes fatal to pedestrians.

I heard that Daylight Savings Time was started to conserve energy. Now I found out it also saves lives.

What Is A Tweetup? I hear Kansas City Networking is doing them
Someone just emailed me a question. What is a "Tweetup"?

As everyone probably does in Kansas City, my first response when I heard the term ‘tweetup’ was to pretend I already knew what it meant. Now that I have actually been to a few tweetups (kudos to the Social Media Club of Kansas City) I can honestly say it is an amazing extension of our virtual network. To put a face to someone you have heard online is amazing.

A tweetup is an event where people who Twitter come together to meet in person. At a tweetup you meet the people you might only otherwise know virtually. Like finally putting a name to a face, a tweetup is a great opportunity to really connect with the people in your network and share just a little more than 140 characters at a time. A tweetup is an excellent opportunity to network and share ideas. The advantage with a tweetup is participants will continue the conversations on Twitter.

I stopped by the Social Media Club of Kansas City's tweetup this past Thursday at the Kansas City Cafe. It was another great meeting that I absorbed tons of ideas. There were experienced tweeters there and also newbies. There was even one person there who had never tweeted before. It was nice to meet more tweeters of Kansas City. Special kudos of Lisa Qualls (@LisaQualls) for pulling the event together.

As twitter grows, you'll hear more about tweetups. The first tweetup you may feel the need to observe. The second tweetup you may have the courage to add. That is great. Go at your pace. There is no right or wrong way.

As Olathe Economist predicts depression is looming, Kansas City Realtor says those using social media will weather storm
If you have been skimming the headlines on Twitter, Facebook, or your Google reader you might have seen a handful of post about an Olathe Agricultural Economist, Bill Helming, predicting a depression is looming.

Bill is making a dire prediction of a beaten-down stock market, a jobless rate at 12 percent, widespread debt defaults and a deflationary price spiral.

Bill has made many predictions in the past. Some of come true and other predictions have not. Will this prediction come true? Bill hopes not.

What do I think?

There are to many people that are seeing the writing on the wall and have been working on correcting the economy. Whether it is for themselves or for a group of of people.

I think for those people who have not started recession proofing their businesses, they will see very hard times. What do I mean? Technology has passed many people up and their are to many people who have not adapted to the changing times.

For those people who have a strong social network, this Kansas City Realtor believes you will see good times ahead.

How do you have a strong social network? You use social media to market, advertise and communicate your message with your customers. Doesn't it make sense that a business with 25,000 people in its network will probably weather the economy better than a business with 100 people in its network?

Businesses that have created a social media strategy to their business plans will weather the storm. Need help, contact a social media strategist or connect with a social media group like Kansas City Networking or the Kansas City Directory.

Kansas City, Missouri school board OKs plan to close nearly half of schools
Kansas City, Missouri school superintendent, John Covington proposed the 'Right-Size' plan arguing that the financial future of the entire school district was at stake. The plan shutters 28 of Kansas City's 61 public schools, cuts 700 jobs and saves $50 million to help reduce a burgeoning deficit.

Since hearing of the school closings, I have just heard that the plan to close the schools is by next school year. That means a junior in a high school from a school closing will have to graduate from a new high school.

Also in the plan is the middle schools will be closing. The plan is for middle school students to attend high schools.

Ten Kansas City area banks ended 2009 with problem loans and real estate foreclosures that exceeded the value of their owner’s equity.

Problem assets don’t mean banks will lose that much money. The amounts have been reduced to show what value remains. Banks also have set aside reserves to cover potential losses.

But the rising levels of problems highlight the industry’s deeper struggle with tough real estate markets. Seven banks on the list weren’t there a year ago, and three of those stand out as among the larger Kansas City banks based locally.

2 banks areeach based out of Overland Park, Olathe and Leawood, Kansas.

The Top 10 Kansas City banks that have problem assets are:

1) Bank Midwest based in Kansas City
2) Hillcrest Bank in Overland Park, Kansas
3) First National Bank of Olathe, Kansas
4) BC National Bank in Butler, Missouri
5) Security Savings Bank in Olathe, KS.

Bank regulations protect against overdraft
Jessica Janasz didn’t think twice before swiping her Commerce Bank debit card to pay for a $10 haircut.

The next day and one debit card purchase later, she checked her online account and realized she had been charged $55 in overdraft fees.

“I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that I was charged so much,” said Janasz, a junior from Overland Park.

Janasz isn’t alone in her frustrations with overdraft fees. According to a 2008 report by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., nearly half of people ages 18-25 incur fees each year for attempting to withdraw more money from an account than is available.

Big Bucks

Banks in the United States stood to collect $38.5 billion in overdraft fees in 2009, according to data from Moebs $ervices, an economic research firm.

However, new Federal Reserve regulations set to take effect this summer will soon cause banks to face stricter rules for charging overdraft fees.

The Federal Reserve regulations will require banks to explain overdraft policies and get written consent from customers who enroll in overdraft protection programs. The alternative would be for customers to have bankcard withdrawals denied when the checking account has no money.

Even with the changes, consumer advocates are demanding more protection. Director of financial services for the Consumer Federation of America Jean Ann Fox said the new Federal Reserve regulations don’t go far enough.
Fox said the regulations don’t protect consumers from disproportionate charges, additional fees assessed when charges aren’t paid and charges from using paper checks.
“Competition hasn’t disciplined banks and the Federal Reserve hasn’t taken the necessary steps, so Congress needs to take action,” Fox said.
The Consumer Federation of America is supporting the passage of House Bill 3904 and Senate Bill 1799, which would “amend the Truth in Lending Act to establish fair and transparent practices related to the marketing and provision of overdraft coverage programs at depository institutions, and for other purposes,” the legislation states. Both bills have been held up in committees since the fall.
U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore is a chairman on the Financial Services committee that is currently considering House Bill 3904. He said the Federal Reserve regulations were a step in the right direction, but more should be done to protect consumers.
“Congress needs to ensure a $2 cup of coffee doesn’t end up costing the consumer $40 in fees,” Moore said through e-mail.
Robert DeYong, director of KU Center for Banking Excellence, said students don’t need to wait for the law to offer protection from overdraft charges.
“The best way to avoid fees is to keep track of what you spend,” DeYoung said. “You shouldn’t write checks or use debit cards without writing it down in a bank book.”
Daniel Rezaiekhaligh, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., said he learned to be more diligent about checking his account records after he was charged $80 in fees from Bank of America for a $1.80 purchase.
“Once you have it happen, you’ll see it’s such a scam,” Rezaiekhaligh said.
Rezaiekhaligh said it helps to keep track of finances, but banks also need to be more responsible for telling their customers about overdraft charges.
“Banks will notify you about anything else, but not about overdrafts,” Rezaiekhaligh said. “You never hear, ‘Hey, not only are you out of money, but we’re charging you $25 more dollars.’”
In a statement about its overdraft policies, Commerce Bank said, “Commerce Bank has invested in providing more information and services to help customers effectively manage their finances to avoid overdrafts.”
A Bank of America representative did not respond to an interview request.
In the meantime, Fox, from the Consumer Federation of America, has one suggestion: “Leave your debit card at home.”

With the new regulations set to begin this summer and more legislation pending Congress, banks will soon have to readjust their policies.
