Was it CBS Sports or KCTV 5 that snubbed the #2 ranked Kansas Jayhawks? Will you boycott CBS?
Sure enough, if you’re a Kansas Jayhawk or Missouri Tiger fan you may know what I’m talking about. You might have even heard the screams in your house like I did. My boys and I were watching the Kansas State Wldcats upstairs and we heard my wife scream in disgust downstairs.
Yesterday, CBS switched the final 3 minutes of the exciting game between the rival Big 12 ranked teams, Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers, for the Little 10 teams, Michigan and Michicagn State game.
Immediately, the social media channels were filled with hatred toward CBS decision. Other local Kansas City tv stations were reporting that the local CBS KCTV 5 station were filled with complaints.
CBS KCTV 5 apologized and reported that they had no control. They said the national CBS station made the choice to switch games. Tweeters were laughing out loud in Missouri, because their CBS affiliates apparently ignored or did not get the memo to switch games. Jayhawkers in western Kansas were filling the pains of their Kansas City Jayhawk friends and were giving them the play by play.
What happened? Remember the Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV 5 reported that the national CBS Sports made the decision to switch games. Other CBS affiliates in Kansas and Missouri didn’t make the switch. The Kansas City KCTV 5 apologized and played the entire second half of the game at 10:30 Saturday night. Nope, I didn’t watch it either.
I did watch the exciting Kansas Jayhawk ending on ESPN. While the #2 Jayhawks won by 4, I would guess the local CBS affliiate, KCTV 5, lost thousands of fans.
Some local bloggers and social media experts are calling for a local CBS boycott. Will you participate? RE/MAX sells more homes than any other real estate company. For a reason...should we talk? According to a new study from the Social Impact Research Center, the Kansas poverty rate is outpacing the United States poverty rate by percentage.
The Kansas poverty rate increased to 2.1% percent in 2009 to 13.4%. The 2.1% is 1% greater than the national poverty rate.
Missouri’s poverty rate rose 1.2 percentage points from 13.4 percent in 2008 to 14.6 percent in 2009.
The Kansas poverty rate could be outpacing the nation due to some high tech companies leaving Kansas. The new tech area opening up in Manhattan, Kansas may help. Kansas employers added 10,200 payroll jobs in March. Seven of the 11 industry sectors reported growth, including construction, manufacturing and trade, transportation and utilities.
The report also says Kansas recorded about 21,000 new claims for unemployment benefits in March, down by roughly 500 from February.

Have you ever heard "Be careful for what you wish for"?
That is so true for me. I have been wanting the Kansas State Wildcats to meet the Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 final. Now here it is. My dream is coming true.
It's big. Look at how many top 20 teams have vanished in the NCAA mens basketball? And my two favorite teams are tops in the Big 12. The Jayhawks are a lock for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, win or lose. My Wildcats could sneak in and grab another #1 seed.
This is a dream year for college basketball fans from Kansas. Isn't it?
How big is the game tonight? ESPN grabbed the coverage and will feature the game tonight moving another tourney game.
If you are watching twitter, you'll notice thousands of tweets about the matchup.
Andy Katz, and ESPN sports writer, wrote on his twitter that " You can debate all you want but Kansas-KState in KC will have the best atmosphere of any conference tourney title game in 2010."
A ticket scalper was quoted before the Wildcats victory with "Big 12 has half of its dream final. If Kansas State beats Baylor tickets will go for $300 to $400 Sat. night."
Now my split household will watch the game. Yes you heard me right. I married a Jayhawk. We have fun, even to the point of dividing the decor in our sports room.
My next dream is to see KU and KSU as #1 seeds in the NCAA tournament and meet in the final game.

The median priced home in Kansas is $148,200. The total income derived from a sale of a home in Kansas is $46,155.
More homes sales in Kansas would definitely help the state of Kansas, wouldn't it?

When a home is sold in Kansas there is an economic multiplier impact. There is greater spending at restaurants, sports games, and charity events. The size of this "multiplier" effect is estimated to be $8,961 per home sold.
Additional home sales induce additional home production. Typically one new home is constructed for every 8 existing home sales. Therefore, for each existing home sale, 1/8 of the new home value is added to the economy which is estimated in the sate to be $18,525.
Kansas needs a vibrant real estate industry, doesn't it?

Nope, don't worry. I'm not talking about basketball.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Kansas is ranked #2 in potential wind energy. What this means is that Kansas is has the 2nd largest potential in the nation for generating wind power. Kansas was #3.
Texas is #1. Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota round out the top 5. The old #1, North Dakota, is now #6.

According to a Bureau of Economic Analysis report from the National Association of REALTORS, the real estate industry accounted for 12% of the Gross State Product in Kansas.
Sounds like a big percentage since Kansas is a farm state and relies on crops like wheat.

Kansas man sentenced for illegal machine guns:
LINCOLN — Richard Canfield, 32, of Overland Park, Kan., was sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted for possession of an unregistered machine gun, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Judge Richard G. Kopf sentenced Canfield Friday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln.
On Nov. 25, 2008, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped a car driven by Aaron Lawless of Gothenburg, formerly of Kearney, on Interstate 80 near Odessa for traveling 81 mph in a 55 mph construction zone.
When the trooper interviewed Lawless, he found two machine guns inside the car.
Lawless’ passenger, Canfield, owned the guns, but neither gun had a serial number or was registered to Lawless or Canfield with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
If you are wondering what they were doing with the unregistered machine guns, Canfield and Lawless had been shooting them earlier near Cozad.
I wouldn't have an unregistered machine gun, but I'm sure if I was not smart enough to have one, I wouldn't be driving nearly 30 mph over the speed limit. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.

The week in sports ended on a wild note. Kansas followed with a loss soon after Kentucky lost. Kansas State started sluggish but survived 40 minutes of high pressure from Missouri. started with a loss to Oklahoma State Cowboys.
In the Olympics, this maybe the best Winter Olympics for the US. The 4 man bob sled team ended a 50 year drought in the bob sled with a gold medal run.
Looking ahead, the American hockey team will play the Canadian hockey team for the gold medal. It's sad to see the Olympics end, it has been fun to watch, hasn't it?
Wednesday will be a big game for Kansas State. Will Kansas State be able to avenge an earlier loss to the Kansas Jayhawks? Although it will be played on the Kansas Jayhawks court, were they have had the best home court advantage, the Kansas State Wildcats should put up a great fight. I'm sure most sports fans in Kansas will be watching the game. Win or lose, the Wildcats should finish the Big 12 season in no less than tied for second.
Who will you be rooting for on Wednesday?

Legislation OK'd to snuff smoking at Kansas restaurants, bars, workplaces:
Get ready to say goodbye to smoking sections. Kansas is kicking the habit by becoming the latest state to outlaw smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces.
In a landmark move, the Kansas House on Thursday voted to send a statewide smoking ban to Gov. Mark Parkinson, who has promised to sign it into law. Parkinson, a Democrat, called the legislation “a victory for workers, families, businesses and future generations.”
Once it is signed, the ban will take effect July 1.
A few Kansas healthcare officials who lobbied to have this legislation passed provided research that heart attacks had dramatically been reduced after smoking bans had been enacted. Here is how the Kansas legislators voted: How area House lawmakers voted Thursday on the statewide smoking ban, HB 2221: REPUBLICANS VOTING YES: Pat Colloton, Leawood; Barbara Bollier, Mission Hills; Jill Quigley and Ron Worley, both of Lenexa; Sheryl Spalding and Marvin Kleeb, both of Overland Park; and Kay Wolf, Prairie Village. REPUBLICANS VOTING NO : Anthony Brown, Eudora; Owen Donohoe, Shawnee; Mike Kiegerl, Lance Kinzer, Rob Olson, Scott Schwab and Arlen Siegfreid, all of Olathe; Ray Merrick, Stilwell; and Connie O’Brien, Tonganoxie.
REPUBLICANS NOT VOTING: Kevin Yoder, Overland Park. DEMOCRATS VOTING YES: Lisa Benlon, Dolores Furtado and Gene Rardin, all of Overland Park; Cindy Neighbor, Shawnee; Mike Slattery, Mission; Milack Talia, Merriam; Melanie Meier, Leavenworth; Valdenia Winn, Louis Ruiz, Margaret Long, Broderick Henderson, Stan Frownfelter, Tom Burroughs, all of Kansas City; Marti Crow, Leavenworth. DEMOCRATS VOTING NO: Mike Peterson, Kansas City.
I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I think this is great for Kansas. It is nice to take the family to clean air restaurants. I'm glad I don't have to figure out which city is ok to eat at and which one is not ok to eat at. The legislation, though, drops the ball by exempting state run casinos. I'm also wondering why the Olathe legislators voted NO on the legislation. Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.
