The 20 reasons why many people think Google Plus is a Ghost Town are . . .
Nearly every day I hear or read something about Google Plus being a ghost town. After looking at their Google Plus account and I can understand why.
If you think Google Plus is a ghost town, here maybe some reasons you it is a ghost town. Although I have thousands of people who have circled me on G+ and have found some great conversations as well as some great friends, many people think it is a ghost town. As an early adopter of Google Plus and having managed several Google Plus pages, I have found Google Plus to be anything of a Ghost Town. Sure, I will agree with you it isn’t where Facebook is today, but given that Google Plus is just barely over a year old and Facebook is nearly 8 years old, Google Plus has made some huge strides in its first year.
Here are 20 reasons why you may think G+ is a ghost town:
1. You share your nudity art on the public stream, rather than to a circle that accepts nudity art. Children are on G+ and you have a responsibility to keep your content from ending up in the wrong hands. I know a few friends that have blocked individuals because their friends kept sending nudity art and they didn’t want their kids to accidentally pick up their phones and see the nudity art.
2. You share stereotypical post. This is a new century and people don’t like generalizations about Races. Don’t share post calling out entire classes of people over behaviors you don’t like, instead of just one individual. Sharing stereotypical post over race, creed or color, will always get you blocked quickly by most of the G+ community.
3. You believe that spamming your issues on popular post is your calling. Spamming is when someone comes across a popular discussion thread, proceeds to place a link to either an advertisement or to their special interest in that thread, piggybacking on its popularity for their own agenda. Some network marketers, political pundits and small business owners like doing this to gain traffic to their website. Spamming will get you blocked quickly. I’ll share some awesome SEO information at the end of this post.
4. You believe that your religion gives you an upper hand on the world’s problems. Because you believe you have the answers you preach and condemn those with opposing views. Rather than preach to people who haven’t asked to preach to and risk being blocked, share your message to religious-specific circles where people of like minds can discuss their faiths privately.
5. During a verbal assault you go crazy and won’t quit until you have the last word. Debate is sometimes a lost art, and when faced with disagreement, anger often ensues, leading to unpleasant back and forth insult or worse. Learn how to agree to disagree. Public verbal assaults will get you blocked fast.
6. You share opinion articles to meet your personal agenda without digging in to make sure the article is truthful. Although Google allows everyone to post links to outside content, you should at least fact-check prior to posting a link to irrefutable proof that eating Pizza is good for diabetics.
7. You believe the women of G+ are there for your ogling and visual entertainment. Women don’t want your filthy private messages and suggestive images. Before textually or visually accosting someone on the forum, ask yourself if your mother or sister would appreciate receiving your content?
8. You feel it is your mission to cut out the jokes and sarcasm on G+. Before you add a inconsiderate comment and then run off to report their joke and comment that you did not consider funny, consider intent, not result. Cool off. If you’re the only one who found the joke offensive, just brush it off before you post that comment. If you don’t you will likely find yourself quite lonely on G+.
9. You complain about Google + and you share post comparing G+ to Facebook. OK, we get it. If you don’t like it, go away. Negativity on G+ will get you blocked very quickly. Nobody wants to hear that noise. Have you thought that maybe your post are driving away your friends. If you don’t like to be a leader and use G+, leave. You can always follow everyone when they jump ship and come to G+.
10. You present yourself as a technology guru and feel you must share technical post or comments that you have no idea about. If your post and comments start leading people astray, you might find your confused followers blocking you. You need to remember that technology is always changing and if you don’t know what you are talking about, it’s fine, but pretending that you’re an expert is dangerous to unsuspecting users. Don’t do it.
11. OK, you have circled me, but won’t let me see your profile, or better yet, you have not completed a G+ profile. Since G+ is for the purpose of discovering like-minds of interest, people will want to circle you back in the appropriate circle. If they can’t determine, they may not circle you back. When a person circles others, while not sharing their own information, is considered bad-form. Many G+ users lacking patience might block you for it.
12. Someone blocks you, and you find it offensive....you and start sharing post about someone blocking you and how rude you think it is. What this will actually get is more attention, but now for the right reasons. You will find more people blocking you. Some people will block you because they’ll believe that if one person blocked you, you must have given them a reason to block you, so they will block you. Other people will block you because they don’t approve of your middle school childish behavior.
13. You are labeled as an Expert, Pundit, Politician, Writer or Celebrity but will not answer or comment on other G+ users. G+ is not one way communication and if you don’t comment or answering G+ users, many G+ users will figure that either you are too good for them or a stand-in. Many of the writers who say that “G+ is a Ghost Town” fall into this category. G+ users who fall into this category haven’t figured out that G+ is built for 2-way communication, not one-way communication.
14. You, simply cannot, or will not, admit a mistake, even if you’re proved incorrect. You feel you are perfect, and above reproach. When other G+ users feel that on controversial post that you haven’t left your ego out of the post, you will get blocked. When you are wrong admit it. It is not illegal to be wrong, just admit it. If you can’t admit mistakes you will get blocked.
15. You, regardless of your intellect, feel the only way to get noticed and followed on G+ is to display cleavage at every opportunity. If you want to be respected for your mind, show me that, and not your goodies.
16 You, despite all reason, logic and excuses, are essentially just a jerk. Yep, these people are everywhere so why would be surprised that they are on G+.
17. You’re anti-social. Unlike a jerk who most people believe have to practice, an anti social person is just made that way. They have few friends in real life and try to disguise their personality as witty and charming. When they can’t manipulate a person to what they want, they become very arrogant and angry. If you’re anti social you may get blocked by people fast.
18. You haven’t taken advantage of the really cool tools within G+ like Google Hangouts and Google Search. Did you know you can have a video conference with up to 9 of your friends for “Free”. If you haven’t checked out where the people are at, you may think G+ is a ghost town. Be an adventurer and checkout the cool tools G+ has for its user.
19. You have added dull friends and have made a judgment that all of G+ is dull and a ghost town. Before you make such a judgement, look at yourself. Maybe it is you and not G+. G+ is designed for you to connect with people that have a similar interest as yourself. If you think G+ is dull and a ghost town, maybe look at the people you have circled or your interest. With millions of people on G+, I find it hard to believe that all of them are boring and don’t frequent G+ frequently.
20. You post as often as a blue moon and then make a judgement that G+ is a ghost town. I actually got this idea from an author who commented that G+ is a ghost town, but he had only shared two public post in the past 45 days. Start by commenting on other people’s post. If you share quality content, people will find you. I have found that G+ is anything but a ghost town.
Google+ is a wonderful place to meet others, to learn, to share experiences, and develop your personal brand. If you fit into one of these 17 behaviors, you might think G+ is a ghost town. Don’t worry though. It is not too late to change. Start by avoiding the the above behaviors, keeping an open mind to other points of view, and not hiding behind your profile. In no time flat, you will develop a rocking stream of content, and thousands of circles from other users. You might even meet the next customer or client on Google Plus.
With the new changes to Google Search lately, G+ will play a major role with small business owners with ranking high on Google. If that is important, maybe you should checkout G+.
Earlier I mentioned in the spamming behavior section that I would share some important SEO information. Here it is: The new Google algorithm that helps determines where your website is ranked on a Google Search has changed. Yes, backlinks are important but it is not the most important anymore. The new algorithm looks at the attached G+ profile of your website and looks at the social interaction. If there is no attached G+ profile or little social interaction, there is a good chance your website will rank lower. In addition, Google takes into account the +1’s your website and attached G+ site get to help rank your website. Obviously, the more +1’s is good because Google figures it is a more important website.
Just remember G+ is still growing and should not be compared to 8 year old Facebook.

Yesterday I shared the 7 types of wrong people in social media to stay away from. I got feedback requesting the type of people to follow. Here are the 3 Types of people to connect with on social media:
1) The first type of person to connect with on social media is the Influencers.
Who are Influencer?
Statistically, only about 1% of the social media users are influencers. They like to start conversations. Their posts are widely read and broadly shared. They are capable of influencing not only the people they know, but also people they don’t know. They belong to the major social networks—Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and LinkedIn. They are typically the trendsetters and If they know you and care about you, they will help you achieve your goals. If you don't feel comfortable asking Influencers help in public, send them a private message. They understand how you feel because they were once in your shoes. They are great a starting Facebook Groups, starting trends and promoting fundraiser events. They understand it is not about them.
Influencers are like your city Mayor on social media. Good Influencers to connect with are those from your city and your profession.
2) The next type of person to connect with on social media is the Engager. The Engager makes up 5% of the people on social media and they act like the broadcasters. They're great at connecting with Influencers and broadcasting post and tweets. They're also good at generating their own post, sharing information and engaging in conversation. Engagers like to collaborate on ideas. Engagers are like the city council and school board members in your city. Good Engagers to connect with are those from your city and your profession.
3) The third type of person to connect with on social media is your Target Audience. Who is your audience? Your audience is your customers, past customers, referral partners, people from your city, people from your market area, close friends and family.
I hope this post will help you become more successful with social media. By connecting with the right people, you will find that social media will not be a time waster and will in fact help your business grow.
If you’re selling your home, and would like to connect with potential buyers....let’s talk.
Who you connect with says as much about you, as the thoughts and ideas you post. Pick the right people, get the right results! If you would like to connect with me, feel free to connect with my social media channels below.

I love social media.
As the real estate marketing specialist on my team, it is my job to market my listings and website. I also use social media to connect with consumers and referral partners. Social media allows me to meet and connect with more people than I could possibly do physically. To me, not only is it the biggest asset – to connect me with the potential clients, clients....people who have questions. It saves time. I do have to watch what I do on social media or I can get off task easily.
Relationships are where the magic happens.
It can also be a time waster if you’re connecting with the wrong people so it is important to stay away from the wrong people.
So who are the 7 types people in social media to stay away from?
1) The Original Time Waster: This type of person may between career choices and will want to pick your brain. They will ask many questions about your business or a business you had been involved in. This person should not be confused with the person who ask just a couple questions. It becomes a point when this type of person will take advantage of your friendship. The conversations will go from being beneficial to a dump fest or a woe with me public outcry. I once met a loan officer who was the Original Time Waster. He really didn't know what he wanted. He also had many personal issues going on and he got social media friends to feel sorry for him. He eventually burned quite a few people and left the area. As a small business owner, you want to be really careful with these people, because they’re not beneficial to your business. In fact they may hurt your business reputation.
2) The Spammer: The spammer is hard to carry on a conversation with. Trying to engage with a spammer is like talking to a 3 month old baby. You can do all the talking and they will sit there and smile. They're too busy posting messages and promoting their agenda. They're even notorious for posting the same exact message multiple times and over many groups. If you comment or ask a question, they typically will not respond because they're busy posting. I've talked to a few and asked them why they post so many times. The responses I have heard back are “it is about the numbers””The more people I meet, the greater chance I can sell . . . “ or “I was posting because I figured people wanted to read it.” Spammers are great at killing the mood of a Facebook group and turning a Facebook group into a ghost town.
3) The So Called Expert Know It All: The trouble with the So Called Expert Know It All is they annoy people. They're too busy trying to prove that they are right and they will kill the conversation by cutting off debate. They will make fun of anyone who has an opinion different than their opinion. They have a knack for locating great discussions and sharing opinions only to ruin it by jumping in and forcing their way of thinking onto everyone else. They think their business is the center of the universe and how dare anyone have a different opinion. When they hop into a conversation you will notice that only people with their opinion will stay in the conversation. These type of wrong people represent the exact opposite of what social media is supposed to be about and are typically found on politically motivated sites and groups.
4) The Shameless Self-Promoter: This person has an agenda and they will keep wasting your time until you bite. Social media is full of these type of people. They want you to read their blog, watch their video or follow their link. They have an e-book or training seminar they want to sell. If you have a conversation with this type of person they will mention their promotion. They want to schedule an appointment with you. They're good at mentioning the DEAL, like “Save Now” “Training Starts Next Week” or “Once I Sell Out, I'm taking my Site Down.” Their great at pointing out the millions they have made and they want to share it with you, if you act now. These people have the same skills of the spammer. They will steal ideas and present them as their own. Stay away from this type of person in social media who does nothing but hawk their own stuff. Don't confuse this person with the marketer because there is a difference. The difference between being a marketer and being a shameless self-promoter is people tend not to enjoy speaking with the latter.
5) The Professional Social Media Employee: This person gets paid to spend their day to post data on behalf of their client. There are a few good ones but for the most part, most don't really know what their tweeting on Twitter or posting on Facebook. It is hard to engage with them because if they receive a detailed or technical comment or reply, they pass it on to the boss and wait for a reply from the boss. Carrying a conversation with this type of person is like playing a game of “Words with Friends” with a person who takes a day between the moves. The lag time kills the conversation. Be cautious of affiliating yourself with these people. It’s not that their bad people, but there’s nothing more dangerous than a person with too much time on their hands. Personally, these people are wonderful people who have great social media skills. Dealing with these people is like that of a relative who keeps you out to dinner for hours just because they have nowhere to go after dinner. Just like our relatives, we love them, but they can also be great time wasters. If you value your time during the business day, tread lightly. If you want to connect with the Professional Social Media Employee, connect with them on their personal time.
- 6) The Habitual Complainer:
I guess somewhere it became acceptable and even encouraged to use social media as the diary of why your having a bad day. You’ve probably met these type of people, right? They’re the folks who always appear to be having a bad day and who spend all their social media interactions yelling and screaming and kicking their feet. Do yourself a favor and avoid these folks. Now don't get me wrong, I understand people have problems and sympathize for them. I have had my share of problems like blindness, diabetes and injuries. I just don't go on social media and do the “Woe with Me” stuff. The people who do are looking for attention and I’ve found that too much exposure to negative people can ruin your mood and your day. Negativity attracts more negativity. Surround yourself with positive people who are excited about what their doing and the people their talking to. Because excitement is also contagious. And which would you rather catch? I know I want to be surrounded by positve people, don't you?
7) The Social Media Guru: Hey, don’t get me wrong. I like gurus and a lot of my friends are social media gurus. It’s not that they’re bad people, it’s just that they often will not bring much value to your business. What do I mean? How is connecting with XYZ social media guru in New York going to help your business in (your city)? As a small business owner, you don’t need to be connecting with hundreds of social media gurus on Twitter and Facebook. A couple is all you need. Read their blogs on Google Reader is ok, connecting with them on social media is useless, other than letting your friends know that you're connected to a famous person. I meet those people all of the time at networking events and they will tell me that social media doesn't work for them. After analyzing their social media presence, I notice that they spend their time retweeting social media gurus and commenting on the same social media gurus walls. Connecting with the Gurus will have little impact on your business.
So now that I shared with you the people to stay away from on Social Media, I'll post the type of people you should focus connecting with on social media tomorrow.
I hope this post will help you become more successful with using social media. By connecting with the right people, you will find that social media will not be a time waster and will in fact help your business grow.
If you’re selling your home, and would like to connect with potential buyers....let’s talk.

I have jumped on the Google Plus bandwagon. The SEO and networking benefits trumps all other social media sites. I have heard many people complain that they aren't seeing the benefits. After looking at many Google Plus Profiles and post, I'm confident that many people on Google Plus are expecting rewards off of incomplete Google Plus Profile. In order to network and preform SEO task more efficiently on Google Plus, I recommend doing the following 7 steps: Step 1 is add pictures on your profile. You can go to your profile and click edit and add one profile picture and 5 additional pics above your profile. Step 2 is add an introduction. Profiles without introductions are like people going to networking events and hanging out in the corner. Add a complete introduction. To give it some SEO value, add keywords describing your business, hobbies and interest. Step 3 is add a Tag Line. By adding a tag line you make it easier for people to determine what circle friends will add you to. For an SEO value, add keywords that describe your business, interest or hobby. Step 4 is add your Occupation and Employment information. Some networking partners will search by occupation and employment information. By adding this information, you will make it easier for networking partners to find you. Step 5 is add a few Profile and Recommended Links. By adding links you make it easier for networking partners to connect with on other social media sites. In addition, add your website and blog links. Step 6 is add Places you Have Lived. I have had several networking partners connect with me due to where I live. Step 7 is make your Profile Search Visible. Go to the bottom of your profile while you're in edit mode and click the box that will enable your profile to be visible. To get started with these seven steps go to your profile page and click the edit button on the top. When you are in the edit mode you will see the Finish Editing Tab on your profile screen similar to:

How can you use Social Media Sites like Facebook and Twitter to Find Your Next Home in Kansas City? Many home buyers may feel that they have gotten a raw deal on a home that they have lived in the past. Maybe you have also. You had the annoying neighbor, the city officials who were a joke, the road crews who seemed to nap and the parks and rec who was disorganized. It used to be that you couldn’t find much information on a city, school district or neighborhood other than from the school district and local Chamber of Commerce. And, of course, their opinions are slightly biased, aren't they. I mean how many school districts will tell you how many kids dropped out, how many kids are truant and what the community really think of their schools. In addition, the local Chamber of Commerce will not post information that will be negative for the city and local business. You get it, right? They're all in the business to paint a rosy picture. Kansas City home buyers can gain A new way of looking for homes by utilizing social networking sites like Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter. Searching for homes through social networking is still in its infancy but is gaining slowly. It is still easier to use a home finder tool from a Kansas City real estate agent. The whole idea is to talk to people, from all walks of life in various communities, including the ones you are interested in moving to in the near future. That way you get more than one opinion and you just may find an awesome deal in places you never thought of. You can find things out about a neighborhood like the schooling, crime rate for the area and if the area has good shopping locations. I'm not talking about the posted material, but real life data from residents in the community. Most of us lean away from neighborhoods that the news portrays as bad. That is only natural, especially when you have children. But the media is not always right and you may find a good neighborhood tucked away in an area with a bad reputation. A lot of times these homes will be less expensive than you think because of the neighborhood. Some communities are very big and a small portion of the community maybe giving the whole community a bad rap. I'll give an example. I had a relo buyer wanting Northern Overland Park. They did not want the Shawnee Mission West high school area because of what they heard. After a little investigation, the couple bought a home in the Shawnee Mission West high school area. That was 15 years ago and the family loves their neighborhood. Kids were happy and now are off on their own. Another example: I had a home buyer who had to stay in Missouri. They only wanted Blue Springs or Lee's Summit. They found a home in South Raytown. After hearing a few gossip stories, they decided against it. They dug more into it and decided that maybe South Raytown would be great. 12 years later that still love their neighborhood. So, use your Facebook, Google Plus, or Twitter accounts to get the word out about where you would like to live and ask for comments. Just be careful of giving out exact information. You never know who may be reading it. Don’t let that scare you off, though. All it takes is a little caution and social networking is the place to find some really good locations. Speak with a Kansas City real estate after you have done your research through the social networking sites. Let them know what you have found out. Most of them would be willing to work with you about a specific location. You can now convert a Facebook personal profile into a Facebook business page. Facebook never formally announced this new capability but Facebook’s help center explains how to convert a profile to a page. In fact, seven different help entries describe this process, making it look like this has been an option all along when in fact it’s news to us — as it was for me. Converting a profile into a page retains all of one’s friends as fans, but all other information gets lost in the process if a user doesn’t first copy and save all of their personal information onto their computer. And once you convert your profile into a page, there’s no way to reverse the process. The ability to convert a profile to a page seems like a logical next step in functionality for the site, given how Facebook redesigned the layouts of profiles and pages to look alike. Converting a Facebook profile page into a business page would suit someone who is simply more interested in maintaining a business presence on the site than a personal one. Small companies and sole proprietors might have a stronger inclination to do this, but so would page administrators whose usage of Facebook has become so professionally focused that they no longer use it for their own social lives. For many of us, Social Media sites are used to stay in touch with families, promote causes, build our businesses....Restart old friendships, make new friends. Recently a friend sent a link to an article describing a trend that is becoming all-too familiar....Real life tragedy while thousands ignore on Facebook....We know experientially and quantifiable that social media pulls prospects and clients towards us...allows people, real people to swirl and eddy into one another. The river of life, know what I mean? Most of our clients experience us face to face, via our blogs, through social media, and such....Yet we are told that no matter how much they read, ultimately trust is developed when we meet over coffee, a Diet Coke, adult beverage...etc/Make sense?Take time out. Pick up the telephone. Reach out for real, get belly to belly, (so to speak, some of you might get a little too close, chuckle)....”Relationships” that develop over social media alone don’t develop the same gravity as friendships that include face to face time.Have an awesome weekend. Weather will stink, but if you’re in the mood to get out with me and look at a few homes, lets talk?RE/MAX sells more homes than any other real estate company. For a reason...should we talk? The Top 13 Kansas City Social Media And Technology Trend Predictions For 2011 This is always an exciting time of the year. We just celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah and of course New Years. You may have just gotten back from visiting family and now you’re planning a Colorado ski trip or a sunny vacation in Texas or Florida. Now we’re into 2011 and you’re wondering what the new years will hold for you? What will be the major social media and technology trends to look out for? And how will this whole social media thing play out? Here’s a few things we do know. The rate at which technology is changing our online world is pretty awe inspiring. The changes we see almost daily on our social media sites are an indication of that. I have been monitoring some important blogs and I have been noticing many changes being announced about social media. If you haven’t realized, you need to realize that the online world that we operate in today will look vastly different in just 6 months from now, let alone a few years. If you’re ready to accept this and be open to this continual change, then you’re in a great position to capitalize on the Top 13 Kansas City Social Media and Technology Trends for 2011.1. More Social Media adaptation in Kansas CityIf you’ve been using the Top 5 social media sites for more than few years – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and a blog, then you’re considered an early adopter. Slowly the rest of Kansas City is catching on.When Harvard and Browns Universities started teaching Social Media classes, you knew this `stuff’ was important and no longer just a fad.Does Google have social media figured out? Not completely. Google has many of the spokes mastered like Youtube and Gmail. Now they are working on their masterpiece, Google Me. Google Me was anticipated to be released by December of 2010. Now the rumours are that Google Me will be released in the spring of 2011. Prediction: More people in Kansas City will adopt social media as their key platform of personal and professional communication, networking, branding, marketing and sales. It’s here to stay. Yes, my prediction is social media will grow. My measuring stick for full acceptance is when my parents start using any of the top social media sites. I also look for Google Me to really change the social media landscape and more people to jump onto the social media bandwagon.. 2. Single User Access to Multiple sites in Kansas CityWe already know that Facebook Connect has been widely adopted by individuals and businesses alike in Kansas City. It makes sense to make it as easy as pie for people to connect with you on your website using one of the largest social media sites as your login credentials. Plus it spreads the word further by ensuring every action they take on your site is shared on Facebook.YouTube was smart to allow Google Connect on their site, so that you could use your Gmail login to access our account.Prediction: More social media sites will allow for this single access sign-on using one main login credential in Kansas City. Perhaps even merging – i.e using your Facebook login for Twitter or vice versa too. This will make it far more likely that people will interact across the platforms on a more regular basis. At the same time their online footprint will be available on more sites and also their information….3. New laws on privacyWe all want the scoop on the next big fad, but we’d like to share as little as possible about ourselves....The battle between privacy and secrecy will rage on, with the side of the fence you're on depending in large part on your age.The trend away from privacy concerns many of us. We understand the desire for transparency, but when is enough, enough? Who currently holds the power? Is it the Mark Zuckerbergs’ of this world who have virtually all your personal information at their fingertips? Or the governments who can shut down such a social media site at will on one hand, and demand access to your information on the other?A great example of this was China’s government banning Google earlier this year and the power battles that ensued. I know we’re not in China and Kansas City isn’t under a communist regime, but have you really read the privacy statements that social media sites have? Surprise yourself, get informed.Prediction: Ongoing privacy issues will lead to a tightening up on the key social media sites and a universal legislation developed. This will primarily deal with the increasing attacks on our privacy due to the amount of information we’re putting out and who owns this. The information as always been there, it is just easier for unwanted people to get to it. Look for universal legislation to address online privacy.4. Social Media TV in Kansas CityTwitter has already stated they want to be the real-time TV channel of the decade. They showed it at the MTV Awards earlier this year. By allowing TV fans watching to interact by tweeting, they bridged a connection of the online world to the offline world in real time. It’s getting easier and easier to make and produce videos and more personalities are tending towards creating their own `free’ TV channels that will compete with mass media. Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library TV is a great example of this.Google has gone to the next level and have joined Apple in producing TV access to the internet. If you haven’t checked it out, head over to a friends house who has it or over to Best Buy. It is really cool. Google has even produced TV access to the Android operating software.Prediction: Major networks will look to host online channels with free and paid for access to content in real-time. They will seek to partner with influential individuals creating great TV content through social networks. Look for more TV access to your TV and phone. With 4G access, this will grow..5. Merging of the big names with the upstartsIt’s not just the big companies like Google and Microsoft that acquire startups with new technology. Some of the main social media sites have done a great job at acquiring companies that have built valuable applications and plugins to extend their platforms.6 weeks ago I was reading about an awesome startup on a blog post. When I started surfing for the company, I found out that the recent success and publicity of the startup led it to be acquired by another company.Prediction: Smaller social media sites and services will look to merge to become a larger entity able to compete on a bigger stage, along with LinkedIn and Facebook. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if MySpace became integrated with YouTube to enhance its dying service in a unique creative spin-off merging a site with a local TV network.6. Online marketing spending will increaseIt’s been baffling to read reports of the continual spending on traditional forms of marketing such as magazines, billboards, TV ads and print fliers. Especially when the figures clearly show that it’s becoming way less effective in a world dominated by online users. I can understand 15 years ago when 85% of a companies marketing budget was spent on traditional marketing. We’re in a new decade. Hopefully more Kansas City companies will get wiser.Newsflash- we don’t look up from our laptops, netbooks, smartphones or tablets to read that billboards anymore (ok slight exaggeration but you’re nodding your heads in agreement). Look at what has happened to the Kansas City Star over the last 15 years. If you’re going to sell an old unwanted item in your home, would you go to the Kansas City Star or Craiglist in Kansas City?Prediction: Finally this ridiculous activity of spending huge amounts of money on traditional forms of advertising will shift towards spending online. Companies will recognize the value of the potential audiences they can reach for far less and much more quickly and invest in social media as a delivery vehicle. Look for ads on Google, Facebook and maybe someday, Twitter, to increase because of their targeted traffic.7. Smartphone dominance in Kansas CityFirst, I’m going to start with, 4G is in Kansas City. Yes, you read that right. Most of the major cell phone carriers have installed or retrofitted their cell towers to carry the fast 4G service. If you think it is a fad. You’re thinking wrong. 4G service is much faster than 3G service. Why is this important? With over 70% of the world having mobile access now it’s only time before many of those become smartphones. Imagine what this means for us as individuals, but more importantly businesses seeking a global audience.Prediction: Look for more people to access the internet with their cell phones in 2011.8. Kansas City will expand to the International communitiesThe above prediction means of course that Kansas City businesses will go more global. The fact that China’s social network is larger than Facebook and Brazil’s is close on its heels means there’s a wide audience not dominated by the western world.Prediction: The ability to start a Kansas City business and go online with international partners and offerings will become far easier. New services will be catering to language barriers and payments to ensure this trend becomes mainstream.9. Women powerThe recent report put out by Intuit shows that over the next decade, women around the world will enter the workforce at an unprecedented rate. Close to 1 billion women, who had not previously participated in the mainstream global economy will do so by 2020. This includes the women of Kansas City. The fastest growing demographic of Facebook users are currently 55 year old plus women. We are creating a She-conomy. Plus women are naturally more social so it makes sense that we are adapting well to the social media sites.Prediction: Look for more Kansas City businesses recognizing the growth in usage by women and starting to create customized products and services online to cater to them.10. Consumers shape the online marketplaceThanks to the number of amazing tools and services we have out our disposal these days it’s starting to transform the communities we build and the relationships we make online and offline. Now you have these social networks where you’re exposed to your friend’s friends’ too and their influence will continue to expand.Prediction: Kansas City businesses are going to be forced to step up and take on multiple, inter-connected approaches to reach new customers, most of whom are hanging out on the web. Look for more Kansas City businesses to find influencers and have them starting to give recommendation about their products or services. We will see more companies using their customers as the face of their business – either by sponsoring bloggers or highlighting top customers in their online campaigns.11. Look for more Android Tablets to hit the Kansas City marketOver the course of 2010 the rumours circulated the technology market that tablets will hit the holiday season and compete with the Apple IPad. The only 2 big players who had tablets in Kansas City for the holidays were Viewsonic and Samsung. Both of them had many limitations and they were no IPad. They don’t operate like an oversized phone because the operating software, Android, was developed for a small mobile phone screen. It only makes sense for the Android Tablets to grow. Look at how fast the Android App market is growing. In 45 days over 100,000 Android Apps were added to the Android market place. Until new Android software gets developed to use on tablets, I wouldn’t upgrade or go out and grab a tablet yet. Prediction: The rumours are that Google is about to release a new update to the Android operating software in the next month and that it will work on tablets much easier. Kansas City retailers should start getting the new tablets that are hitting the retail market in the next 60 days. Tablets are fun and I see them really picking up in sales in Kansas City by the summer of 2011.12. Which Social Media Club should I join? That is a million dollar question. What disturbs me is that I have heard rumours that the metropolitan Kansas City area is not big enough for multiple social media groups. That is bogus! Just as people are different, so are social media media groups in Kansas City. Kansas City is a big city and can support multiple social media groups. Prediction: I look for more social media groups to grow in Kansas City. I predict that the current social media groups to form more of an identity and work to encourage more people to use social media. I also predict that the current groups will work together to promote tweetups, mashups and conferences.13. Mobile applications replace traditional web applicationsThe smart phones have now become the web in your hand. This has emerged in just the last 3 years with the introduction of the Apple iPhone leading the charge with a design that took technology from the geeks by designing interfaces that are natural and intuitive with a usable interface that put technology power in the hands of the masses. The high speed mobile and wireless networks have also evolved to provide the backbone to distribute the data including video and images. It is transforming industries such as music, book publishing, online shopping and newspapers. Mobile makes it even easier to share with your friends with Facebook and Twitter apps at your fingertips. Prediction: If you can’t carry it with you, you’re wasting your time. If you don’t advertise via mobile enabled apps, you’re wasting our time. Look at even faster 4G speeds to help increase mobile applications. These are just some of the trends that 2011 holds. Do you think I’m right on or I’ve gone raving mad? Do you have some more to add? I helped contribute 35,000 meals to Kansas City Harvesters - What did you do today? Most days end with a conversation with my two sons. We typically discuss what we had done that day, what we learned and what we need to do to prepare for the next day. My son, Chandler, started the conversation that he had already completed his 17 pages of homework. He then proceeded by showing me the homework. I figured it was something simple and it was really 10 minutes of homework. In reality it looked difficult. I asked him how he was able to squeeze it in between practices tonight. He said his goal wasn’t to look at all 17 pages at once and let that worry him. He set a goal of 1 page at a time. The next thing he knew, his homework was done. My son, C.J., shared the Simone football ceremony with me. The ceremony honored Nathan Stiles (the Spring Hill football player who died this season) and Trevor Roberts (the Kansas high school player who lost part of leg due to a hit during a football game). Kansas City Chief’s players Matt Cassell and Thomas Jones gave speeches to the students in attendance. Bubba Starling won the Simone Award as the most outstanding Kansas City metro high school player. Bubba gained over 3200 yards with an impressive 2417 on the ground in 12 games. C.J. shared with me that you need to set your goals in order to succeed. He then headed to work on some goals for next year. After my boys shared their day, I shared with them my day. First I attended a very successful Kansas City SEO meeting and we worked on a new social bookmarking site that Karl Koele introduced. I then thanked my boys for the incredible help they have done on the Kansas City Social Media breakfast and that the next event is December 9th at the Olathe Houlihan’s. Next, I helped my fellow ReBarCamp Committee members contribute 35,000 meals to Harvesters, a local Kansas City food bank.. I shared with my boys that Harvesters is a Kansas City food bank that helps 620 non-profit agencies feed 66,000 people each week. Harvesters really needs help of the local Kansas City community throughout the year because 50% of their donations comes in the months of November and December. The summer is when Harvesters really needs help because that is when kids are out of school and that is when Harvesters gets the fewest donations. The ReBarCamp Committee will be looking to move next years event from the fall to the summer. The following people really helped make this past years ReBarCamp become a success: Chris Drayer, Michael Russell, Michael Pierce, Stacey Johnson-Cosby, Cindy Dicianni, Catherine Thomson and of course myself, Chris Dowell. If you would like to contribute to the next ReBarCamp via as a sponsor, speaker or committee person, feel free to contact any of the committee members.
What did you do today? What is ReBarCamp?“ReBarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.” It’s simple.. it’s people meeting people, learning, sharing, gathering, and networking. The knowledge you gain at ReBarCamp is invaluable.. the friendships and associations you make, will change your life and your business! RE Bar Camp is what YOU Make it… every person has an individual take-away! This past year’s ReBarCamp was held at the Town Pavillion in downtown Kansas City. This year we’re looking for a new venue. It's been nearly 2 years since Hootsuite launched. Since then, HootSuite has crossed over 900 thousand users with 1.9 million social networks, and now manages 1 million outbound messages per day with a team of nearly 30 employees, plus they've released free mobile apps for several major platforms (with more to come), and forged close partnerships with our friends at Twitter and Facebook... HootSuite helps organizations use the social web to launch marketing campaigns, identify and grow audience, and distribute targeted messages across multiple channels.
Using HootSuite’s unique social media dashboard, teams can collaboratively schedule updates to Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Wordpress and other social networks via web, desktop or mobile platforms plus track campaign results and industry trends to rapidly adjust tactics. Launched in Dec. 2008 by Invoke Media, HootSuite’s rapidly growing user base includes governments, artists and organizations like The White House, Martha Stewart Media, SXSW and Zappos. Accolades include awards from Mashable’s Open Web, Canadian New Media, and Shorty Awards. A few months back, Hootsuite started offering both free and paid plans. Since their announcement, they've listened closely to the feedback of their customers. They have introduced a paid plan in order tp keep releasing more apps and functionality.

The big mystery is how to turn Social Media friendships into business results....I have been using many SEO techniques to have the highest single trafficked Kansas City real estate agent website. I have now adapted new marketing techniques with social media to gain a 1st page listing on Google on my top 5 keywords. In the late 90’s I had a discussion with a realtor.com salesperson. They felt that their plan was a much better marketing plan and that Search Engine Optimization was too difficult. Lets fast forward to 2010. Realtor.com gets less than 6% of the real estate web traffic and my $5000 I spent with them has yielded me very little business. I’m going to spill the beans and share a plan on how you can see the same success. This may appear to be basic for some who read this Blog, however my experience has been that most Kansas City business people have not yet designed a plan to make sure they are being found online. Some Kansas City business people have good intentions, set up a few sites and forget them. This is worse than not having any profiles at all.The guidelines below can be expanded over time; however, it’s just a plan to get you started in the right direction. Remember that your goal is “....to drive traffic to your websites, your services, and develop relationships that will result into a face-to-face contact.”Nearly everything below is free or very affordable, however you must be willing to invest the time for setup and a certain amount of time every day to work your plan. If you’re not willing to do that, then hire someone to set you up and assist you to get started or don’t do it at all. This is by no means an overnight success for getting found online. If you don’t think you need it, just go “Google yourself” (Google search your name inside quotation marks) and do some soul searching about your future.
Checkout Part 1 that included the steps.10 Effective Ways to Use Social Media Effectively for your Kansas City Business1) Promote or pimp businesses that will refer you business- Don’t overly self-promote yourself .2) Include links in your post to interesting sites. Not just to your sites.3) Follow positive people who are willing to help you- Don’t follow just anyone and everyone - I learned this the hard way. I have over 4,000 friends on Facebook. It maybe hard to believe, but I actually have not accepted over 5,000 people. Why? Many had an agenda, some where time hogs and others self-promoted themselves. I’m like everyone else. What is in it for me!4) Establish a personality- your social media friends want to see your personality, views and opinions. Have you ever had that bland friend who had no opinions and couldn’t decide on anything? That’s right, your social media friends don’t like it also.5) Interact with other users- Social media isn’t about selling. It is about connecting. No one wants to buy until they get to like and trust you.6) Monitor the chatter about your business- Use resources like Hootsuite to see what people are saying about your business name. If you had a restaurant and someone tweeted: “Service was slow and the food was cold, I wouldn’t recommend”. Wouldn’t you like to know.7) Customize your profiles- Too many times I see that people haven’t completed their social media profiles and that turns most people off. The only people you’ll attract will be your friends and family. Is that what you want?8) If you intend to use social media. Post a comment, question, link or interesting data daily- Posting once a week will not cut it.9) Share your social media profiles on other social media channels and on your website- A great way to do this is with badges and most social media platforms have badges.10) Find the influencers - Get the influencers to pimp out your products and services. If a no name person bragged about your services it probably wouldn’t affect your business right? Now if the LeBron James bragged about you and your business on a live tv interiew and said that the reason he is so successful was because of your business, don’t you think that would affect your business? Feeling like there is to much to do or you have questions, feel free to read my “Why Social Media Ebook for Kansas City Businesses.” It is Free!

If you don’t think you need it, just go “Google yourself” (Google search your name inside quotation marks) and do some soul searching about your future. So, here’s my proposed SEO and Social Media Business plan:1) First choose Keywords that your consumer will use to search you on Google. If you need help, use these tools: Google Keywords, Wordtracker, Mike’s Marketing Tools and now my new favorite SEO Beta (a plugin to Google Chrome). 2) Start using an Analytic Tool to see where your website is and keep track of what SEO techniques you implement. My favorite analytic tools are: Google Analytics, Compete and Hitwise. 3) Activate an account on Only2Clicks and start saving the websites mentioned here. Only2Clicks is a fantastic bookmark site that saves a clip of the site saved. I have over 50 categories that I save websites on.4) Start a Blog that is geared toward the Kansas City marketplace and community. I recommend Blogger. Blogger is a Google blog that is indexed quickly and has some awesome SEO tools. There are many other FREE Blogs you can get started with. Ex. are Wordpress, Technorati, Typepad & Posterous.Once you are setup, You’ll need to do the following:- Write to your audience with good, interesting content

About a year back I visited Forty Winks in Western Olathe, Kansas. It was a bare bones low overhead furniture store. While I was there I had a quick discussion with the owner and a sales employee about social media. During the discussion the owner acknowledged that he didn't know much about social media nor did he want to learn. He had been in business for many years and didn't plan on changing anytime soon. Fast forward to today. If you have been anywhere in Olathe, KS., surely you have seen the "Going Out of Business Signs." Yes, that is right, Forty Winks is going out of business. Maybe if Forty Winks would have adapted to social media you would be seeing "Forty Winks Expansion - Come See Our New Inventory." I actually don't know why Forty Winks is going out of business and the new staff isn't offering any explanation. The question I'm asking is, "Is another Olathe Business Closing due to not adapting to social media?" Let us know what you think or add to our blog by writing a comment.
