  • City of Olathe, Kansas opens a new bike trail

The City of Olathe, Kansas is opening a new 2-mile pedestrian trail on Labor Day.

The Heritage Trail will run from Blackbob Park to Heritage Park between 159th and 151st streets.

It is currently nearly 100% percent complete. A contractor was seeding along the trail this week and sodding will begin after Sept. 15.

Hikers, runners and bicyclists will be using the trail. As always motorized vehicle will not be allowed.

The entire Heritage Trail has been asphalted and concrete approaches have been installed.

Michael Latka, project coordinator for the city’s parks and recreation department, said the trail cost $840,000 to construct.
He said 80 percent of those dollars came from the Kansas Department of Transportation. Johnson County paid 10 percent of the cost and the city tax dollars paid for the remaining 10 percent.

Latka said the city already has constructed 23 miles of trails within the city limits, including trails within many of the community parks.

Another trail called the South Indian Creek Trail is under construction near 159th Street and Ridgeview Road and is currently about 50 percent complete. The South Indian Creek Trail is scheduled to be completed in a about 3 months.

The majority of the project will be finished at the end of this month.

  • Olathe, KS. Marathon will take on Oz theme for 2011

Marathon runners will have to break out their ruby slippers, or at least some red running shoes, as next year’s Olathe Marathon has been renamed the Oz Marathon.

Ashley Holverson, vice president of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce's Convention and Vistors Bureau said that runners have already signed up for the marathon, set for April 16th, 2011, in front of the Garmin headquarters.

After testing the Oz theme in places like Facebook, the theme idea became a marketing standpoint since many races have themes to help them be more attractive.

  • Heritage Park in Southern Olathe gets stocked with trout

Two lakes stocked with 4,000 pounds of rainbow trout:

This past week, Heritage Park, in Southern Olathe, got stocked with part of a 4,000 pound shipment of trout.

Johnson County Park officials said most of the trout would be caught by the start of the summer by anglers. About 30 fish are tagged, so park official can keep track of how many have been caught. They said a few might survive until August but not many. Trout is a fish that likes cold water and is not native to Kansas.

The 4,000 pounds trucked into the parks this week came from a fish hatchery in Ava, Mo., which is just east of Springfield.

The load cost the district $11,600 or $2.90 a pound. Park officials said those dollars don’t come from taxpayers. The money is derived from fees paid to the park district by anglers for the right to catch the trout.

Park officials said they spend slightly more than $20,000 a year to stock the lakes with fish.

I heard that stocking that lake at Heritage Park was quite a spectacle. A hole was cut in the ice and the fish were dropped in the hole. I was told that kids in the spectator crowd were allowed to handle the trout and drop into the holes. Sounds kind of fun!

I haven't been out to Heritage Park to fish but it sounds kind of fun. Fishing for trout is fun in the Missouri rivers and I wonder if fishermen get the same kind of experience at Heritage Park. I plan on getting a license this year and taking the kids out to Heritage Park and checking out this adventure for myself.

Does anyone have any Heritage Park fishing experiences they would like to share.
