I have much to say about this store. The owner is psychotic and does not have any self-awareness. He pulled his daughter's hair and hit her in the face while I was in the store. He was yelling like a crazy man in her ear. I was not the only customer in the store. HE HIT AND PULLED HIS DAUGHTER'S HAIR IN PUBLIC AND IN HIS VERY OWN STORE. He's an abusive person and I WOULD NOT recommend anyone shopping at this store! This store also sells fake Ed Hardy clothes. The so called designer clothes he sells there are knock-offs. I will NEVER set foot back in that store.

Supporters of the earnings tax — which include the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce — have criticized the repeal movement, suggesting that it’s mostly the bailiwick of well-heeled Missouri businessman Rex...

City Attorney Galen Beaufort issued an opinion that the city did not have to include a write-in slot on the...

Marshall & Ilsley (NYSE: MI), which operates M&I Bank, is eliminating positions ranging from internal support to management. The affected employees, who were notified Tuesday, “will receive generous severance packages, including outplacement services,” she...

The organization’s index of for-hire truck tonnage lifted 3.8 percent in January, coming off a revised 2.5 percent gain in December. The index is adjusted to reflect seasonal variations.
“Many fleets told us that freight was solid in January, although operations were a challenge due to the winter storms that hit large parts of the country,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said in a...

H&R Block Inc. saw an increase in its crucial early-season tax clients, despite not being able to offer refund anticipation loans.
The loans typically are popular among early-season filers, but they’ve come under scrutiny recently. H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) was hamstrung, facing trouble with the loans earlier than its big competitors. Also, limitations by the Internal Revenue Service meant a delayed start to the tax season.
Even so, the Kansas City-based company prepared 2.5 percent more tax returns during the first part of the 2010 tax season, through...

The Kansas Bioscience Authority needs more oversight to help curb bulging salaries and entertainment expenses, some Kansas lawmakers say.
Members of the Senate Commerce Committee want to add three voting board members for the $581 million state fund, which was created in 2004 to boost the Kansas bioscience industry.
“The board has been irrationally exuberant in allowing excessive, extravagant entertainment and executive bonuses,” said Sen. Chris Steineger, R-Kansas City. “We want to continue to grow our bioscience industry, but we want our money focused in direct investments, not extravagant...

A Missouri senator has introduced legislation he said would curb the abusive practices of the payday loan industry in Missouri.
Sen. Joe Keaveny, D-St. Louis, has proposed Senate Bill 295, which would prohibit lenders from renewing unsecured loans of $500 or less. The bill also would prohibit lenders from making loans to consumers who have an outstanding loan or within one week of a borrower paying off a previous loan.
The measure would require lenders to disclose certain information to consumers at the loan signing: the duration of the loan, the amount and date of payments due, and the amount of interest and fees that will be charged during the duration of the...

The specter of Kansas City losing its earnings tax revenue caused a major ratings agency to downgrade its score on the city’s general obligation bonds.
Fitch Ratings assigned a AA rating Kansas City’s general obligation bonds, down from the previous AA+ score.
Fitch’s report on Tuesday attributed its downgrade to the unstable future of 1 percent Kansas City’s earnings tax, which provides about $200 million a year in revenue.
“The downgrade reflects the greater inherent risks to the city’s financial performance and overall vitality created by the new initiative requiring voter approval of the continuation of the city’s principal revenue source every five years,” the Fitch Ratings report...

Phoenix and Washington set the national pace, respectively picking up 10,400 and 10,200 retail positions during the 12-month...

If the Kansas Legislature expands slot machine gambling in the spring, a Las Vegas casino owner will buy and reopen the mothballed The Woodlands Racetrack in Wyandotte County.
Phillip Ruffin, a former Wichita resident, said Monday that his option on the dog and horse track is good until the end June.
“We will not close on the deal unless we get gaming,” he said in a telephone interview. “Slots are imperative to get that thing going.”
He said the Legislature would consider the proposal, but he declined to predict a timetable for seeing the measure...

Bernard Taylor is finally off the hook for $1 million.
Taylor, one in a procession of Kansas City, Mo., School District superintendents who faced short tenures, was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by an erstwhile student who was attacked in school in 2005.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled last week that Taylor was not liable for such damages while serving as superintendent.
He was sued by Craig Dydell, a student at Central High School. During the fall semester of 2005, another student — James Whitehead — cut Dydell’s neck with a box cutter during an unprovoked attack in the school’s...

The federal government is in the midst of a battle against refund anticipation loans, and so far it looks like a rout.
First, the Internal Revenue Service said August that it no longer would provide the “debt indicator.” Tax preparers used the debt indicator to determine whether a taxpayer refund would be paid or intercepted to cover debts such as unpaid child support or delinquent student loans.
The announcement led to Kansas City-based H&R Block Inc. (NYSE: HRB) not being able to offer important refund anticipation loans (read more here), and now it appears that H&R Block’s competitors are facing similar...

Construction of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility appears on track with President Obama including $150 million for the project in his proposed fiscal 2012 budget.
The budget, released Monday, would give the financing to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to keep the $650 million NBAF project moving.
“This is clearly encouraging news to see this high on the president’s priority list,” Ron Treywn, vice president for research at Kansas State University, said during a Monday conference...

President Obama’s 2012 budget request delivered a blow to plans to build a $211 million federal building in downtown Kansas City.
The request did not include $20 million for design and acquisition financing requested by the General Services Administration. The money is considered a key step toward getting the building completed by its target date of 2017.
The federal building would serve as a centerpiece for the eight-block East Village redevelopment project.
“Our proposal for a new federal building in Kansas City remains a priority for the...

Kansas City’s seven mayoral candidates had public safety high on their list of priorities at a Tuesday evening forum, which took place before about 200 businesspeople near the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s new office at Union Station.
When asked what they would do to lower instances of violent crime — 106 homicides occurred in Kansas City last year — mayoral hopeful Sly James leaned on education.
“Until I see the news story that said a Ph.D. shoots Master’s degree candidate on 39th and Prospect, I will believe our failure to educate people in this city has a direct correlation to crime,” James...

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., plans a hearing March 1 about “the federal government’s use of pricey public relations contracts,” according to a Wednesday release.
The investigation started with a $234,000 contract that the General Services Administration awarded to Jane Mobley Associates Inc. after media reports delved into environmental contamination at the Bannister Federal Complex in Kansas City.
The GSA Inspector General is on track to release his report in late February.
“From the beginning, this PR contract raised serious questions about how the federal government was spending money to minimize bad publicity in situations like...

Sprint Nextel Corp. is expected to report the first positive gain in contract customers in years when it releases its fourth-quarter financial results Thursday.
The Overland Park-based company (NYSE: S) has lost millions of wireless subscribers who sign two-year contracts in recent years as poor customer service, technology problems and snazzier phones at other carriers’ stores, such as Apple Inc.’s iPhone via AT&T Inc., have caused them to gravitate elsewhere.
Contract customers are seen as the most lucrative because they tend to spend more than subscribers who pay for their wireless services on a month-to-month...

It’s been almost a year since federal health care reform was signed into law, and some economic indicators show reform hasn’t had the negative economic effect some had predicted — at least, according to the Missouri Foundation for Health.
“There’s been a lot of speculation that health care reform will hurt the economy and cost jobs. Now that it’s been almost a year since the signing, we’re starting to get a better understanding of that relationship,” Thomas McAuliffe, policy analyst for the Missouri Foundation for Health, said in a...

The U.S. Postal Service has started a new fiscal year with a wider first-quarter loss, and it’s warning that at this rate, it won’t be able to meet some of its obligations by September.
The Postal Service reported a first-quarter loss of $329 million, compared with a loss of $297 million a year earlier. Excluding the cost of pre-financing future retiree health care benefits, which the Postal Service is asking Congress for permission to delay, it would have posted a $266 million profit.

“The Shadow Market: How a Group of Wealthy Nations and Powerful Investors Secretly Dominate the World,” by Eric J. Weiner, is a recent book that I found really interesting.
I wondered about the title of “Shadow Market” as I got into it. He obviously was not referring to the shadow banking system, which many blamed for much of our recent economic malaise. He describes the “shadow economy” as the invisible and ever-shifting global nexus where money mixes with geopolitical power. Sovereign wealth funds, hedge funds and private equity funds play major roles in this...

A change in the approach to cleaning underground water has pumped up business for Lenexa-based JRW Bioremediation LLC.
Up until the mid-1990s, the main way of cleaning polluted groundwater involved so-called “pump and treat” systems that removed the contaminated water and then either applied chemicals to remove or neutralize the impurities, or allowed the volatile chemicals to vaporize before putting the water back into the ground.
In recent years, the focus, especially among Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites, increasingly has changed to less-harsh methods, including bioremediation, or using natural bacteria and other biological processes to remove pollution from an...

A couple of failed fishing trips, along with aching joints, helped start one of the Kansas City area’s more unique green companies.

The U.S. Senate had an interesting day Wednesday. Members rejected the first attempt to repeal health care reform, then in the same breath (and bill, actually), they overwhelmingly voted to strike down a reform provision.
The Senate voted 81-17 Wednesday to repeal reform’s requirement that 1099s be filed for any purchase worth more than $600. The costly and time-consuming provision already was a sitting duck because of its burden on businesses, small ones in particular. Then, in November, President Obama mentioned the provision as one of the changes reform might need, giving Democrats in Congress the...

QC Holdings Inc. saw its earnings plunge last year as legislation restricting payday lending hampered its business and prompted branch closures.
Earnings dove 39.8 percent to $11.94 million, or 66 cents a share; annual revenue dropped 9.2 percent to $188.09 million. During the year, QC shut down 55 branches that had little chance of turning a profit long term.
Not including financial effects of closed branches, QC had income of $14.22 million, down 27 percent.
The company ran 523 branches in 24 states at the close of 2010; it has 21 more branches scheduled to close in the first half of this...

Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 363,000 F-150 pickup trucks because of an interior door handle spring.
In a filing, released Thursday, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford said that the door springs in model year 2009 and 2010 F-150 pickups can fracture during normal usage, allowing the door latch to open during a side-impact crash.
There were no accidents or injuries reported as of Jan. 21 related to the defect.
The safety recall is expected to begin sometime around...

The truck freight market may be stabilizing, but YRC Worldwide Inc. still is expected to show lower revenue and continued losses when it releases its fourth-quarter performance numbers Friday morning.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters predict that the company will report a loss of $1.37 a share for the three months ending Dec. 31.
By comparison, YRC (NasdaqGS: YRCW) reported earning $119.5 million, or $1.64 a share, during the same period of 2009. However, that profit included $193.9 million in one-time gains from an equity-for-debt...

Cloud operator nGenX LLC has raised $5.2 million in equity financing, which it plans to use for new technology and to beef up its marketing and sales force.

“nGenX is ripe for meteoric organic growth from both its direct and indirect sales channels,” President Robert Bye said in a release. “These investments are helping the company forge a path to support our projected growth in 2011 and...

Missouri’s having a good year, budget-wise, on two fronts — tax revenues are ahead of last year’s pace, and they’re ahead of projections for the current year.
Linda Luebbering, Missouri’s budget director, reported Thursday that year-to-date general revenue collections for fiscal 2011 are up 6.3 percent to $4.13 billion, compared with $3.88 billion in fiscal 2010.
That puts revenue “slightly ahead” of forecasts for the current fiscal year, which started July 1.
Gov. Jay Nixon announced that as a result of the improved tax collections, $10 million will be sent to school districts to help cover transportation...

From the third quarter of 2009 to the third quarter of last year, which ended Sept. 30, home prices in the Kansas City metro dipped 0.6 percent compared with a...

Even though Kansas City’s jobless rate dropped in December from the prior month, the employment picture was far from pretty.
The Kansas City metro area was among the markets with the largest employment declines compared with a year before — down 18,100 — behind only the Chicago, San Francisco and Detroit metros, according to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Employment had risen in 24 of the 36 large metro areas during the 12 months ending in December. But among the large metros, Kansas City saw the second-largest year-to-year percentage decline in employment — a drop of...
