In announcing Google Inc.’s proposed high-speed fiber network, officials pointedly predicted benefits for the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Dr. Roy Jensen, director of the KU Cancer Center, said it would enable expanded use of telemedicine.
KU physicians already use video feeds to speak with patients in rural physicians offices.
“What’s going to be possible with this technology is extending that model to home care,” Jensen said. “Being able to better monitor patients without having to have them to come in (to the doctor’s office or clinic) just wasn’t possible with the Internet speeds that were available in the typical American...

Local technology companies said Google Inc.’s plan to install a super-fast Internet backbone in Kansas City, Kan., represents a huge opportunity to expand the capabilities of their businesses and attract new entrepreneurs to the area.
Jeff Melcher, CEO of NetStandard Inc., which operates a data center in Kansas City, Kan., said Wednesday that he expects to see a wealth of new customers looking for remotely hosted applications and managed services.
“It’ll give us tremendous connectivity with virtually everyone in Wyandotte County,” Melcher...

Google Inc. has pointed its considerable spotlight on Kansas City, Kan., but local economic development officials aren’t going to waste time basking: They’re ready to run.
“We have the first-mover advantage, but it won’t last forever,” said Bob Marcusse, CEO of the Kansas City Area Development Council.
On Wednesday, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) named Kansas City, Kan., as the first Google Fiber Community, meaning the city is slated to get Internet service that’s 100 times faster than what’s available to most...

City and state dignitaries joined Google executives at Wyandotte High School Wednesday to announce a landmark high-speed fiber network investment. Although highly touted by local officials, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., still must formally approve Google’s arrival in the cable marketplace, expected next year. Milo Medin, Google’s vice president for access services, took questions from the Kansas City Business Journal about the landmark deal.
Q: Will Google use local companies to build the fiber network?
Medin: Once we get the engineering plans done, then we’ll be able to comment on...

Sporting Kansas City’s plans to create the most technologically advanced stadium in the world just received a huge boost from Google Inc., which selected Kansas City, Kan., for its first high-speed network.
KCK is the home of the Major League Soccer team’s new stadium, set to open in the summer.
“What we’ve always wanted is for our stadium to be a show piece,” Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman said. “We want it to say we’re not afraid of taking some chances and delivering all sorts of services that haven’t been delivered before, and (the Google announcement) just builds on all of...

North Kansas City knows what it’s like to be Kansas City, Kan.
In May 2006, the small enclave just north of the Missouri River became the fastest Internet city in the Show-Me State when it launched a fiber-optic network as a municipal-owned utility.
But in terms of scale, KCK’s Google project, announced Wednesday, dwarfs North Kansas City’s $10 million venture, which was financed mainly through gaming revenues from Harrah’s casino.
KCK’s 1-gigabit-per-second service far outstrips North Kansas City’s 30-megabit system, which sells for $200 a month to business...

The architect of the merger of city and county government in Kansas City, Kan., said Google’s decision Wednesday to build its inaugural 1-gigabit fiber-optic network in Wyandotte County offers further proof of the wisdom of eliminating duplicate local governments.
“When you have unified government, they only have one government to deal with, and along with a publicly owned utility, it just makes the process much easier from a communications perspective as well as from a permit perspective,” said former Mayor Carol...

Kansas government officials were quick to respond to Google Inc.’s announcement that Kansas City, Kan., is the first Google Fiber Community.
Twenty-one other Kansas communities — nearly 1,100 nationwide — had vied for the ultra-fast broadband initiative, which could have big business implications. In the Kansas City metro area, other applicants included Leawood, Lenexa, Mission, Olathe, Overland Park and Kansas City, Mo.
Here’s a sampling of what some local officials had to say (see the embedded video for comments from Joe Reardon, mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City,...

A new poll by Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future shows that most Missourians support nuclear power, even after the disasters that struck a nuclear facility in Japan.
But another group says the poll leaves out the main question: Whether Missourians are willing to pay for an early site permit to increase the state’s supply of nuclear power.
Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future, which supports legislation that would allow Ameren, Kansas City Power & Light Co. and other utilities to recoup from customers the cost of a site permit for a new nuclear plant in Callaway County, released a statewide survey Tuesday that demonstrates public support for nuclear power, construction of a second nuclear power plant and keeping open the option of more nuclear power for the...

Google Inc. has picked the winner of its fiber lottery: Kansas City, Kan.
“This is the equivalent of Kansas City winning the technology golden ticket,” said Greg Kratofil, a technology lawyer and shareholder for Polsinelli Shughart PC. “This is a game-changer for Kansas City and the whole region.”
Google’s investment will help draw new tech companies to the area and support the area’s existing entrepreneurs, he said.
The Internet giant (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced early last year that it wanted to build a fiber-optic Internet network for as many as 500,000 people that would provide as much as 1 gigabit of data per second, far exceeding the 10 megabit-per-second speeds available on the best cable modem or DSL...

“We’ve been through this before with Verizon and Sprint and a number of other (mobile carriers),” Block said. “By the time it whittles down to retail stores, it can take a couple of years.”
T-Mobile is a tenant in 5,100 locations nationally, and AT&T (NYSE: T) has about 4,600 stores, according to CoStar Group...

The recession didn’t boost entrepreneurship in the United States, despite claims to the contrary, according to a recent study from a visiting scholar for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Unfortunately, a careful look at multiple sources of data shows that the Great Recession was actually a time of considerable decline in entrepreneurial activity in the United...

The Office of Public Counsel, which represents Missouri ratepayers, claimed that members of the Missouri Public Service Commission who approved the utilities’ combination were the same ones who met with utility officials without public meetings beforehand and created such a strong sense of impropriety that they should have recused themselves from the proceedings, according to court...

When Richard Breeden steps down as chairman of H&R Block Inc. on April 18, he apparently will be bowing out of several years of active involvement in Kansas City business.
Breeden, personally and through hedge fund Breeden Capital Management LLC, played a key role in shaping events at two of the Kansas City area’s largest companies: H&R Block Inc. (NYSE: HRB) and Applebee’s International Inc. (Now owned by DineEquity Inc., based in Glendale, Calif.)
Breeden declined an interview request.
Breeden Capital Management burst onto the business scene in Kansas City in September 2006, buying 740,000 shares of Applebee’s stock for...

Clifford Roth has had a long, colorful history in the Kansas City area.
Now, Roth is looking at a potentially long future in federal prison.
The 62-year-old Leawood lawyer, and at-times financier, admitted guilt on Monday to running a Ponzi scheme in Texas that has ties to Kansas City.
He could face as many as 10 years in prison upon sentencing, which hasn’t yet been scheduled; he currently is free on bond.
Norman Gaar, a former Kansas senator, said he thought his prior law partner was helping his bank holding company expand in Texas — until the FBI started asking questions about what Roth was up...

On a seasonably adjusted basis, the number of people with jobs in the metropolitan statistical area increased by 1,500 compared with December, a...

Most ad campaigns are geared toward convincing consumers to buy a product or service. Butler National Corp.’s present campaign is aimed more at getting people to buy its stock — and sell it, too.
Olathe-based Butler National (OTC QB: BUKS) has been a public company for years. It hasn’t attracted the attention of many other area stocks because it’s not huge and it’s not particularly easy to describe. It also isn’t trading on a big exchange.
The company’s operations include aircraft modifications, selling monitoring equipment for wastewater treatment plants and managing a couple of small...

The Kansas House of Representatives killed an effort to repeal a 1 percent sales tax increase that passed last year.
House members voted 80-39 against the bill Thursday.
Several House members had campaigned in part on a platform to decrease the tax burden, particularly the state sales tax rate increase to 6.3 percent.
Kansas lawmakers last year passed the measure to increase flagging state revenues, which led to sharp cuts in government programs.
A repeal of the sales tax would have cut an estimated $350 million to $391...

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services is downgrading its corporate credit rating for YRC Worldwide Inc. after the company said it failed to meet a milestone in its restructuring plan.
The failure means the Overland Park-based trucking company’s (Nasdaq: YRCW) lenders could declare the company in default, pushing YRC toward bankruptcy protection, though the lenders have not indicated that they plan to do so.
In light of the “increasing likelihood that the company may restructure or file for bankruptcy under Chapter 11,” S&P said it is lowering its corporate credit rating for YRC to CC from CCC- and putting YRC CreditWatch implications on negative instead of...

The bill would abrogate a Missouri appeals court decision in August that opened up coworkers to this higher risk.
“Currently, all Missouri workers are at risk of being sued and held liable for honest accidents at work, and that is simply unfair,” Goodman said in a written...

When my cell rang a few minutes before the locksmith was supppose to show up I was pleasantly surprised. Figured he was telling me he was on the way. he was , however, letting me know he was going to be a few minutes late. No problem. He at least called. He came as promised and fixed my front door lock in no time. I had just randomly picked him off citysearch and was somewhat concerned that I might be "taken" . He repaired the lock on our very old front door in less than 10 minutes and the bill like 65$. we were so afraid we would have to get a new door as we have a very old house and knew it would be next to impossible to match the hardware. He put all new "workings " in the inner lock and it works great.

The hearing before U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson will be in St. Paul, Minn., on April 6 at 9:30 a.m.
That’s a change of venue for the NFL, which has had its labor issues overseen by U.S. District Judge David Doty in Minneapolis since 1993. Doty often has sided with NFL Players Association over the years.
Labor talks between the NFL Players Association and the league collapsed Friday, and the players dissolved their union and filed an antitrust suit against the...

Representatives of the National Football League Players Association have asked top college prospects not to attend the NFL draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York, according to a story posted by Sporting News.

He did some work in the cervical area in my neck and I am pretty sure he also did some work in my lumbar region. He did two out of six spinal surgeries in 2005. He is extremely thorough and saw what was wrong immediately. He is very, very kind in his bedside manner, he really spoke to me very gently and tried to explain to me. It was from a car accident so it was a pretty horrific time in our lives at that point. My back had been broken in the car accident and not knowing exactly what was going on. He took the time to explain everything. I appreciated that so much. There are only five vertebrae that are not fused everything else has had to be fused. But I am walking on my own, I am going well. He is fantastic! Gifted hands and a gifted mind! Dr. Rosen was just very patient and very kind, really through the whole thing. I really appreciated his understanding because I was kind of shell shocked from the car accident. We are not from California, we live in Texas. Unfortunately later they had to take Dr. Rosens fusion out to put a new one in, a longer one, but they said Dr. Rosens had been done really well, that it looked great. Even though it took some pretty drastic measures between him and the doctors here in Texas, I am a human being walking around like anybody else. Nobody would know. I wish him the best because he is the best, he really is!!

Frankly, we are the originators and innovators of the well known Brooklyn condo inspection punchlist process since weve been doing these types of certified inspections since before there was even a license invented to do so. Over the years we recognized the importance of ancillary inspections to make every inspection even better, which led to offering fantastic relevant inspection services like Brooklyn mold inspection and of course always including at no additional fee, a licensed Brooklyn termite inspection. Both the mold and termite inspection add-ons have been well received and appreciated by all of our Brooklyn condo inspection clients over the years. We have been the number one source for Brooklyn condominium inspection and its because we will treat you like number one as well.
