What a special week in Johnson County.
We opened the first building on the K-State Innovation Campus in Olathe. Named the International Animal Health and Food Safety Center, it is the first leg of the Johnson County Education Research Triangle. It was, frankly, overwhelming to see more than 500 purple people gather for the occasion.
Many things came to mind: the thre-year effort to do something never done before in the country, the hundreds of people who helped make it happen, the faith the voters showed to invest in higher education and grow our economy, the quality of leadership on the Triangle Authority, the first new company to locate here because of our investment in animal health and food safety, and the partnership no one would have guessed could happen, where KSU and KU came together to do something...

YRC Worldwide Inc. said it has entered definitive agreements with the majority of its financial partners about a restructuring plan that would attract $100 million in new capital and swap current debt for stock shares.
The plan will even more dramatically dilute the holdings of current shareholders.
In a Friday release, the Overland Park-based company (Nasdaq: YRCW) said more than 95 percent of its senior secured lenders, all of the multi-employer pension funds, all of the lenders under an asset-backed securitization facility and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union have signed off on the...

Outgoing Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser has notified the City Council that he is vetoing ordinances that would clear the way for a new 200,000-square-foot office building on the Country Club Plaza.
“To allow another, overly large modern office building to hulk over the north side of our Plaza could be a mistake of generational proportions,” he said in a release. “It is a city design mistake I must oppose with every power I have — including the power of the veto.”
The mayor, who lost a re-election bid to Sly James, said the lame duck council’s decision to pave the way for the 46th Street and Broadway speculative project “seems short-sighted and smacks more of skillful politics than rational...

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed an employment relations bill passed by the Missouri Senate, saying it would strike down central tenets of the Missouri Human Rights Act.
Nixon struck down Senate Bill 188, which caps punitive and compensatory damages in workplace discrimination cases and requires plaintiffs to prove that discrimination was an employer’s “motivating” factor in a discrimination claim, rather than the current “contributing” factor standard.
“Senate Bill 188 would undermine key provisions of the Missouri Human Rights Act, rolling back decades of progress in protecting civil rights,” Nixon said in a written...

When is your trash no longer your trash?
In my city of Overland Park, I understand that “free stuff” zone to be at my curb. In Lawrence, however, it belongs to you until your trash hauler picks it up.
I am not proposing that we have a transfer of title for our trash, but rather mean to educate you as to when it is no longer your trash.
The first implication of this decision is timely because it relates to tax trash or personal information that you throw away. For those of you who are not hoarders, you occasionally purge your personal files and your daily credit card...

Kansas City added to its cache of vacant office space during the first quarter, but it did so at a slower pace than during eight of the past 10 quarters, according to Cassidy Turley market research.
Yet despite the improvement in what’s referred to as the market’s net absorption rate, vacancy rates may keep climbing through the end of the year.
During the first three months of 2011, Kansas City’s nearly 48 million-square-foot office market added 68,000 square feet of vacant space. That negative net absorption means there is more space coming available in the market through lease terminations and new construction than is being removed through new leases and...

When people hear you are building a home they automatically feel sorry for you because they assume it will be a nightmare. To the contrary building with Sawlor Construction has been an enjoyable and exciting experience. Since our first meeting we have confidence in their processes and the execution of the build. The contract allows the buyer to get a complete understanding of the materials that will be used in the construction of their new home...and more importantly no questions go unanswered. Mary, the office manager, keeps you organized and no decisions are made without the clients approval through a change order process. Keith Sawlor is an exceptional person to deal with and the people working for Sawlor are friendly and knowledgeable in how to build a Sawlor home. The project manager, Mark LeBlanc, is with you from start to finish and is always available to answer any questions you may have. He also shops with the client to ensure the products chosen for the home meet the requirements for space allotment and the overall design. This added feature is unique to Sawlor clients and is definitively most beneficial. Marc can also be fun to hang out with during day! If you are building your dream house Sawlor Construction is your builder. As I continue to watch my house be built I fall in love with it more and more and I can thank Sawlor for that.

The Kansas Court of Appeals has reinstated 57 felony charges against the former attorney for the Kansas City (Kan.) Board of Public Utilities.
A decision published Friday reverses the dismissal of grand jury charges against Rodney Turner, who was accused in 2008 of stealing from the public electric utility by billing more than $370,000 for unclear legal work.
A Wyandotte County Court judge threw out the grand jury charges in 2009 after hearing claims from Turner’s attorneys that a Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent tainted the grand jury by implying that Turner and ex-BPU Chief Administrative Officer Marc Conklin somehow were tied to the 1987 murder of Wyandotte County Democratic Party Chairman Chuck Thompson, a case that remains...

During the quarter, which ended March 31, Kansas City-based DST (NYSE: DST) cut jobs, with the bulk of the layoffs in its Output Solutions unit because of lower U.S. operating volumes and the rest in the Financial Services unit. The move meant $5.4 million in termination benefit expenses.
In the Financial Services unit, operating revenue declined 0.9 percent during the quarter; income from operations fell...

I wish I could go back in time and go anywhere other than Nonna Lucia's last week. From start to end, everything was terrible. The cold antipasto was tasteless, the homemade salad dressing tasted like it was going bad, my husband's chicken dish was waterlogged because they didn't drain the pasta right, and my lasagna was burned black. The server was only present twice the whole meal, once to take our food order and once when we had another waitress flag her down. When I brought all of these problems to her attention, she offered no apology. Didn't say anything. It took another 20 minutes to get a check. This place is an absolute waste, if you go then you're crazy

Founder Cliff Illig discusses those modest beginnings in a video released Tuesday by the SBA and Automatic Data Processing Inc., one of six aimed at encouraging new entrepreneurs by showing how they could one day become leaders in their prospective...

Pletz’s attorneys and federal prosecutors cited a busy trial schedule for the rest of 2011, coupled with significant amounts of evidence to sift through, as cause to move the trial to a later...

My experience with Solar Energy International has been all good. I wasnt sure what direction I wanted my solar career to take when I first enrolled at solar energy international. After taking the free online course (introduction to renewable energy) I realized I want to work, bringing energy to the developing world. I know I will need to get a good solar education to be able to make a difference in my field. Taking a class on solar panel installation is a must. The solar workshops offered by Solar Energy International are available online as well as in person making it very convenient to get the pv training I need. As soon as I finish my classes form Solar Energy International, I plan on testing for my NABCEP certification, and putting my solar power training to work.

Royal Movers Norfolk, located at 3313 Croft Street, Norfolk, VA 23513, began as a very specialized company. Our focus was moving of fine antiques, breakable furniture and extra heavy items. When I got there I was greeted with coffee and timbits. One of the younger guys there explained the process and gave me a price list for all the work they do. He told me that he would most likely have to order in some parts and said that he would try to talk the place that makes them into doing a rush shipping. I left the laptop, signed the forms and left. I got a call the next day, they had it fixed and running, but were just waiting on the screen to be shipped which was going to take 2 weeks even after they express shipped it. They had the laptop plugged into a normal desktop screen, and lent it to me so my wife (but not my son) could use it until the other one was delivered. And when it was, someone came over to our house, attached the new screen and gave me a slip to enter into their raffle contest. They told me that they do a draw every couple of months, and give away custom computers. Wish me luck! These geeks are tell-your-friends material, no question about it

Hi, your package arrived today, I got to admit the speed of the delivery was surprising, at most a week to the Bradford (UK). I moved onto the G-14, which I ordered because of the comments on the product from your website. Again very impressive, I was still a bit apprehensive, but that quickly disappeared when I tested it, the presentation was excellent and consistent, considering I purchased 60g. That is very good. Your product is of the highest standard and you are without a doubt, a reliable and reputable company. I am more than happy to recommend your product to all my friends and anyone who will listen. There are only two reputable sites offering this kind of service, but only one with your quality, service and experience, there is only one G-14 insane incense, there is no substitute. I am a customer for life. Thank you All at G-14 insane incense.

Christopher....My wife and I would like to extend our gratitude for your hard work, commitment, and dedication throughout the short sale process. Due to several unfortunate events, we were unable to keep our home and with the declining real estate market and poor economy, the stress and credit implications of a foreclosure was overpowering. We visited numerous realty offices prior to yours, none of which had the knowledge or high interest in assisting us during this difficult time. You were able to provide us with a clear explanation regarding all of the steps of a short sale. We quickly realized that you and Maximum Mortgage would be the most qualified to assist us. Your team work and increased efforts as the weeks went by, you were able to coordinate, negotiate, and finalize the closing of our home while keeping us informed during the entire process. We would again like to thank you and Lauren Dolly and your team for your help. We would recommend Maximum Mortgage company to anybody. Sincerely, Bruce & Yasuko

Kansas City leaders praying for Polsinelli Shughart PC to stay in town without incentives may find that to be a tricky proposition.
Here’s why: Financing for new law firm buildings is tough to come by, industry sources say.
As businesses, law firms have few assets outside of their people. They also can be volatile, with law firms sometimes dissolving after the departure of a few key partners.
And lawyers generally are skittish about signing their names to a letter of credit to secure financing, which is another form of...

With hours to go before a government shutdown would begin, Republicans and Democrats appeared to drift further from reaching an agreement to finance the government beyond midnight.
They couldn’t even agree on why there isn’t an agreement.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters Friday morning that he and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, had agreed to cut spending by $38 billion for the rest of the fiscal year. But Reid said this legislation can’t move forward because Republicans insist on including a provision that would end federal financing for Planned Parenthood, an organization that offers abortions as part of its health services for...

If it is determined that an SBA loan is the best option, it’s still best to get the paperwork rolling now instead of...

The company decided a video would be a more effective way to go over its 2010 results (including an $85 million profit), depict its strategy and...

The National Football League and the NFL Players Association have extended labor talks for seven days, postponing the chance of a lockout, according to NFL Network.
The move comes one day after the parties agreed to a 24-hour extension, which kept the current collective bargaining agreement from expiring at midnight.
The move gives NFL ownership and the players union more time to reach a new collective bargaining agreement without ending up in court. The current agreement requires the players union to decertify before the agreement expires or wait six months to...

Central Bank of Kansas City received a tax credit allocation of $18 million. St. Louis-based Enterprise Bank & Trust, which has seven local branches, received $35 million.
The program is designed to give individuals and businesses a credit against their federal income taxes for making equity investments in development groups, called Community Development Entities, that typically target distressed...

In somewhat of a surprise move in Topeka, the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee rejected Gov. Sam Brownback’s resolution to get rid of the Kansas Arts Commission.
Brownback, a Republican, had sought to eliminate the commission and a handful of other entities in an effort to correct the state’s $550 million budget imbalance.
Given that the Kansas Arts Commission, an agency that provides financing to artistic programs and pursuits in the Sunflower State, occupies $800,000 of state money, some wondered why Brownback singled out that program to save...

At stake is an estimated $100 million-plus in annual economic benefit for cities such as Kansas City, where the Chiefs have a significant effect on hotels, restaurants and other...

Court filings claim Clearwire Corp. artificially inflated its subscriber figures to attract investors, selling wireless services to customers who lived beyond the range of its cell towers.
Details of the alleged 2008 scheme were included in a motion filed Thursday in federal court in Seattle seeking to resuscitate a 2009 lawsuit accusing the Kirkland, Wash., company (Nasdaq: CLWR) of false advertising. That suit was dismissed but is under appeal.
Plaintiff attorneys said they want the court to reconsider its dismissal decision and issue an “indicative ruling” allowing them to add a charge of fraud to the suit based on the alleged...
