Kansas City-area employers posted 3,000 fewer new job ads online in May than in April, totaling 22,300, according to data from The Conference Board.
Last month, 25,300 were new. However, the May figure still was higher than the 21,100 new ads posted in May 2011.
Overall, local employers had a total of 36,500 job ads online, down from 37,300 in April but up from 34,200 in May 2011, the nonprofit’s Help Wanted OnLine Data Series found.
Nationally, online job ads decreased by 45,700 to about 4.71...

Johnson County residents are watching closely as the Kansas redistricting case goes to a three-judge panel expected to draw up the maps on its own rather than select one of the options presented to it.
The case wrapped up and went to the judges on Wednesday. The court has less leeway than the Legislature — which failed to adopt new maps this year — in deviating from the “one person, one vote” principle that each district should contain the same number of people to the extent possible. Gov....

GREAT PLACE TO VISIT !!!!

Renting here was horrible from the beginning. Almost all of the other tenants are college students so there was frequently loud music late into the night. Often the floor would vibrate from the noise during my childrens' nap time. None of the windows sealed well so we had almost constant cigarette smoke in our apartment from the surrounding apartments. One time someone threw up on the concrete right outside our door and it stayed there for weeks before the maintenance crew would come clean it up. Broken beer bottles and junk mail littered the common areas. There is visible illegal drug use as rolled roaches can often be found outside in the rocks and there were even several rolled roaches and holding pins scattered on our porch and in our living room when we moved into our apartment. The apartments are very poorly constructed. Walking across the living room made the entire apartment visibly move and we had to put shims under all of our bookshelves to keep them from tipping over due to the unevenness of the floor. All of the woodwork had water damage and the tile in the bathroom was peeling at the edges. The kitchen appliances were very worn but functional. Each month we got a bill for water which would occasionally be very high due to estimated usage and adjustments. Gas, waste water, and trash were paid. The was "free" wireless internet, but this was often unusable due to high traffic and low bandwidth. We could only rely on being able to access the internet between 6 AM to 3 PM after which it would be totally unusable. The office staff would often be gone during normal office hours, which made it very difficult to schedule a walkthrough when we moved out. We were moving locally and took two weeks to move, but the office staff was never available at a time we could meet for a walkthrough. We asked her to call us if there were problems and turned in the keys after we spent a week of evenings cleaning. We left the apartment in much cleaner condition than when we moved in, so we trusted her to call us if there were to be deductions. There were not calls. Two weeks after our lease ended, we got our deposit back with deductions for a cleaning crew ($80), oven cleaning ($25), and replacement of the stove drip pans ($20). The reasons given for the cleaning crew were fingerprints on the bedroom mirror, soap scum in the bathroom tub, dusty ceiling fan, tiny food particles in the dishwasher, and black marks in the oven. Now we may have genuinely forgotten the dishwasher, but I know for a fact that we cleaned every part of the rest of the apartment including the mirrors, tub, fan, drip pans and oven. That apartment was filthy when we moved in but we left it in much better shape than we found it. According to the laws concerning rentals, a landlord can only deduct charges for "excessive filthiness" not for the light cleaning that the disposition sheet described. These deductions are illegal. We spent the better part of the past two weeks leaving polite messages at the apartment office for clarification of the charges but only today, 2 weeks later, had a reply. The manager had a very uncaring attitude when asked to explain the charges and refuses to return the rest of the deposit. We have rented for years and between myself and my husband we have had 15 leases. We have never ever had any part of our deposit withheld. Don't rent here!

Kansas City ranks as the 10th-worst dressed among large cities, according to Travel + Leisure.
Minneapolis ranked a notch better than Kansas City, while Phoenix ranked one step worse. At the bottom of the fashion pile was Anchorage, Ala., while New York City came in on top.
Travel + Leisure gave Kansas City props for barbecue, but noted wryly that good food and friendliness doesn’t make for good fashion.

I wrote in last week’s paper about Bryan Cave LLP being bumped off a lawsuit it was handling against ViraCor-IBT Laboratories and ViraCor founder Flip Short due to a possible conflict of interest.
Stepping into the breach is Scott Bethune of Kansas City-based Davis Bethune & Jones LLC, who now represents plaintiffs Donald Carrigan and Konstance Knox. Their suit, which claims they held a 66 percent stake in ViraCor when it merged with...

Nico Leone will take over as general manager of KCUR-FM in August, the station announced Thursday.
Leone succeeds Patricia Cahill, who retired, as head of the public radio station in Kansas City. He has been co-executive director of KDHX-FM, a nonprofit community radio station in St. Louis.
KDHX may have more in common with Kansas City community radio station KKFI than with KCUR. The station’s lineup is heavy with locally produced music and talk shows, and its website encourages area bands to...

A Kansas City Council committee on Thursday morning approved a tax plan that probably will put a pair of measures before voters in August.
The Kansas City Finance, Governance and Transportation Committee advanced a bill that would call an Aug. 7 election about whether to eliminate some taxes, increase the sales tax and issue $500 million in bonds for stormwater projects.
The full Kansas City Council is expected to take up the matter on May 24.
Kansas City Mayor Sly James testified on behalf of...

A Tiawanese smartphone-maker’s hiccup with the International Trade Commission is putting a kink in Sprint Nextel Corp.’s weekend plans.
The Overland Park-based wireless carrier (NYSE: S) has been heavily marketing the coming release of a new 4G LTE-enabled smartphone — an event set for Friday.
But a customs review has put the unveiling of the HTC EVO 4G LTE on hold. And no one is saying for how long.
This newsroom received a deluge of releases this week playing up Friday’s launch at various...

We’ve got a fresh update from Mayor Sly James’ office about what Thursday’s tax proposal will look like.
Readers might remember an original $1 billion bond issuance idea that was cast out early in the budget process to pay for infrastructure improvements.

Here’s how it works:
In August, voters will consider these questions (summaries,...

Sprint Nextel Corp.’s flagship 4G LTE-capable smartphone is being held up in the wake of a patent infringement ruling, The Wall Street Journal reports.
A customs review means a later debut for the HTC EVO 4G LTE, which had been set to go on sale Friday.

The University of Kansas has proposed increasing tuition and fees for incoming freshman who are state residents by 4.9 percent, the Lawrence Journal-World reports.
Non-residents would see a 5 percent boost. The increases would boost the cost of a 15 credit hour semester to $4,839 and $11,874, respectively, the report says.
A KU official told the Journal-World that the proposal is the lowest percentage increase since the 1999-2000 school year and would help improve the university.

I called http://www.texasstarhvacr.com/ to service my HVAC in my house. I found them randomly through my directory. They were from Houston TX. I am glad to have a service company like this. What impressed me from the beginning was their willingness to work for the job. There's a big difference between value and price, and I definitely wanted value; the best system at a fair price. HVAC Service Houston TX gave me that. I will be using them in the future to service any HVAC issues that arise. Thank you.

Recently I decided to kick my almost $5 / day cappuccino habit, and invest in one of those fancy, high end espresso makers. Not only would it pay for itself in a matter of months I reasoned, but it would also look fab on my countertop!
I headed directly to the Halifax location of Cucina Moderna. It is one of three independently owned locations in the HRM, and is chock a block full of kitchenware, cooking implements, and accessories that any aspiring chef could desire.
After examining all the fine wares available, I zeroed in on a Breville espresso machine. Price tag-hefty! But it did it all - ground it's own beans, made customizable sized coffees, and had a fantastic foaming wand. The staff were completely familiar with the machine, and were extremely helpful in talking me through all the steps needed to produce the perfect cappuccino. No pressure sales, just good old fashioned advice.
Anyone looking to have a highly enjoyable shopping experience with a vast array of top quality products for the kitchen should look no further . This shop has it all!

The number of people 65 years and older in the Kansas City metro area is expected to almost double by 2030, creating new pressure on the area’s health care, transportation and community support systems.

Researchers identified five main areas where an older population...

An AFL-CIO representative told Sprint Nextel Corp. board members Tuesday that the company’s current short-term incentive plans give executives an incentive to take on “excessive risk” that may not pay off for the company or shareholders in the long-term.

The manager at Protemps in Mississauga - Shirley, is really nice. Unfortunately, when she contacted me to work for this agency, she passed me onto here senior staffing "specialist" JOAN DE SOUSA to find me jobs.
Let me warn you now, Joan De Sousa does NOT care about customers. She only cares about filling in positions so that she can get the money from clients. After making a lot money for this agency for almost a year, the contract had ended. Prior to my contract ending, she offered two job positions, both which did not even pan out. On the day my contract was ending, Joan decided to try to force me to accept a job that's far away, something I do not like and pays less. She thought just because my contract would end that I would be willing to ACCEPT ANYTHING. You would think that after being a customer for so long that she would be able to treat me better. When I turned down the position, boy did her ugly side come out. SHE WAS RUDE, MANIPULATIVE, UNETHICAL AND A LIAR. An example: when she was offering me that low paying job, she said it's from termp to permanent (she knew I'm looking for permanent position). When she mentioned that the girl who's been working there for 2 years is leaving, I realized that girl has been there for so long and hasn't even gotten hired. So I told Joan that I might be going back to school - SUDDENLY her story changes and said the position will NEVER become permanent. Wait a minute... didnt't she just say it's temp to perm?
I could go on about how unethical this woman is. She's lied in another situation, exaggerating things. Seriously, do not use protemps. They only care about you making money FOR THEM and not what you want. STAY CLEAR FROM JOAN DE SOUSA. You've been warned. And Joan, karma will get you back someday.
There are many agencies nearby since it's near Square One. You're better off using them.

Digital Ally Inc.’s first-quarter revenue dove by 20 percent, the product of sluggish sales, but the company managed to trim its loss through cost-cutting efforts.
The Overland Park-based video surveillance product maker (Nasdaq: DGLY) blamed the soft sales on a persisting slow economy and lower tax revenues that limit law enforcement agency spending.
“The reduction in our first-quarter operating loss by 35 percent despite a 20 percent decline in revenue required some difficult decisions and...

Eric Blank and his law office helped me with a personal injury case and they turned a bad experience into a very pleasant one. They were very polite and pleasant from the start, but did not mince words and told me exactly what would be happening, how it would be happening, and why it would be happening. Once the process was started, I was very surprised by how often the office contacted me. I expected to hear from a law office only when they needed something for me, but this law office contacted me often to see how I was doing, how I was healing, and to update me on the progress of the case. Another pleasant surprise was that when I called, someone was available that could answer my questions right away, I never had to wait for an answer. I expected a moderate settlement from this case, but Eric was able to get me much more than I expected. He really knows how to negotiate with the insurance companies and collect more for his clients. Eric's skills and knowledge gave me a bigger settlement, which allowed me to put money away for graduate school and I couldn't be happier. Overall, this experience with Eric and his staff was the best legal experience I have had. Hopefully I will never have another personal injury case but if I do I'm definitely going to see Eric Blank!

TMNG Global lost revenue but appears to have prevented its loss from widening in the first quarter.
The flat financial results come as the Overland Park-based company adjusts to new leadership, a shift that dominated the telecommunications consulting company’s first quarter. TMNG (Nasdaq: TMNG) started the year by terminating founder, Chairman and CEO Richard Nespola in response to shareholders calling for better company performance. TMNG added an independent member to its board later in January.
