Since many actors receive their initial training somewhere other than NYC or LA, it’s important to examine the many different types, styles and locations of institutions available to them. The studio setting, with its small class size, ongoing sessions and a la carte selection of topics are just one of several options for the actor in training. Andy Garrison, founder/instructor of The Actor Training Studio in Kansas City, talks about his approach to this kind of actor education. In this three part interview, he’ll share his thoughts on the creation of his studio in Kansas City, his particular teaching methods and the pluses and minuses of the studio system.

What is essential? Isn't that what all the conversations about budget cuts come down to? We all agree that safety and protection are essential, but after that, the conversation splits and fractures. The economic crises has brought into bas-relief, once again, the discussion of what is essential. Healthcare, transportation, food, schools, prisons, care for the elderly and less-abled . . . the arts?

from the February 2010 issue of KC Stage
If you google “Nick Cave soundsuits” you will find links to videos of people dancing wildly in body encasing wearable art. Each participant moves in their own slightly different way, but with undeniable passion and with a drive to use these soundsuits to their full potential. Made of everything from twigs to human hair, they are living breathing sculptures, the brain child of artist Nick Cave. The performances are at once beautiful, funny, entertaining and thought provoking, and while their creator is a trained artist, they possess everything one could look for in a theatrical production. Perhaps it is appropriate then that the artist himself seems to live life as a one man show, where all of the world is his stage and his audience is growing each and every day.
Most interviews start with a basic opening question, something to get the ball rolling and open a dialogue. With Nick Cave, the interview begins the second he walks in the room. It is often said that great artists see the world differently, that they are able to find the exceptional in the mundane or every day. Cave is the walking definition of an artist and his work reflects his ability to put the focus on what is possible with passion, practice and creativity. Cave wants to make people think, to make them question what they see around them and to use any means available to create a world of open minds and open dialogues.
source
Born and raised in central Missouri by a single mother, this extravagant and theatrical man was fortunate enough to have a family that nurtured and encouraged the joy he found in art. A graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Cave found that to effectively communicate his visions meant that he couldn’t define himself by one specific medium. “I made a commitment to really invest in the research around material and the history of various disciplines,” Cave explains. “I never was an artist that was locked into one particular medium. It’s about finding the means necessary to express the ideas.” It is unsurprising that Cave took his degree in fiber from KCAI and built upon it with a master’s degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, years of study through the Alvin Ailey dance program, and a job teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he is now the director of the graduate fashion program. Cave took these years of study and the opportunity to teach and be around young and creative minds and came up with the concept that would put his name into the art, dance, theatre and design communities.
Cave created his first soundsuit in the early 1990’s, the first of hundreds that would come to life in the coming years. Adding the human element made them soar, and they became art that could communicate from a pedestal or a choreographed stage routine. Despite the intense focus and meticulous construction it takes to create the soundsuits, Cave is surprisingly willing to relinquish control when it comes to the soundsuit performances. Whether it is an ambush style street presentation or a choreographed production, he is happy to step back and let the art speak for itself. Ultimately, the goal is to reach out and allow the audience to have a reaction and Cave is confident that each dancer will only add to the experience. “The soundsuit can take care of itself as an object,” Cave said. “You can walk out on the stage and just project and that could be as big as the world.” Add in the element of dance, everything from traditional African movements to wild and unplanned gyrations, and you have more than an exhibit or a way to showcase the pieces; you have a conversation, and it is one Cave hopes will continue whether people understand it or not. “It allows you to flounder in your thoughts of what you thought it was meant to be,” Cave enthused.
source
Performing at the Kansas City Art Institute’s 125th Anniversary Gala on February 20, 2010, Cave is excited to showcase multiple soundsuits with over 20 local dancers and performers. It is not only an opportunity to bring his art and showmanship to a new audience, but a chance to visit his roots in the Midwest and his alma mater. “I am excited just being able to bring it to different mindsets and a different group of people,” said Cave. “It is about community based work and what can happen.”
Ultimately, Cave knows that this is just one step in his career and he will one day move on to his next venture, a world of new visions and innovative creations. Until then he is looking forward to broadening the minds of those who are willing to stop, watch, think and maybe even dance a little themselves.

The inspirational stories of Little House on the Prairie, one of the most beloved literary celebrations of pioneering America since Laura Ingalls Wilder published the first book of her classic series 75 years ago, take on a brand new frontier in this uplifting new musical. Melissa Gilbert, who we embraced as Laura for 10 years in the much-loved television series, is all grown up and stars as Ma. Through the magic of live theatre, audiences will follow the Ingalls family's journey westward to make a better life for their children. Recommended for the entire family, Little House on the Prairie, the Musical brings the joys and sorrows of family life during the settlement of the prairie to contemporary America. Families will identify with its life-affirming stories that celebrate the pioneering spirit and the core values on which this country was founded.

Poor Kyle
Rating: 2
Broke-ology
Kansas City Repertory Theatre
For the second year in a row, Kyle Hatley has been saddled with an ungodly bad script to direct at the Copaken. He somewhat survived last season's Borderland, buoyed by a great scary performance from the villain, but he gets no such luck this time around. Broke-ology is an amateurish mess. The script is filled with blatant exposition and easily marked as a freshman effort from the playwright. A few moments of pathos along the way do not keep one sufficiently awake to really watch this thing. And Mr. Hatley's staging is crude, at best. Bad blocking on a cumbersome set. I don't usually notice such things, but here it was unavoidable.
The two sons are fairly competent in their roles but the father and the mother are just bad bad bad. Oh lordy, girl, yes we get that you are pregnant! She ate up at least half a minute every time she had to sit down or get up trying to make sure we got that she was preggers. Less indicating from all concerned would have been welcome, but with such a thin script maybe they felt they had to pump up the volume. Avoid at all costs!!! But because it is about neglected black people in KCK, the fool audience leaped to their feet at the end of the performance. I was astounded and ashamed.

This is no con - a musical treat!
Rating: 4
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Barn Players, Inc.
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (book by Jeffrey Lane, music and lyrics by David Yazbek) gives a musical twist to the 1988 film which starred Michael Caine and Steve Martin. A charming, suave, experienced con man, Lawrence, is approached by a brash upstart to the trade, Freddie, wanting to learn from the master. The action that keeps them turning from allies to adversaries provides a wealth of comedy.
The Barn Players' production, directed by Barb Nichols with musical direction by Martha Risser, is fast-paced and energetic, aided by Rob Reeder's choreography and an accomplished orchestra. The set design by Alex Coppaken gives a seeming added depth to the Barn's stage, and changes are fast and fluid.
The principal roles of Lawrence (Mark Murphy) and Freddie (Kevin Bogan) are not perfectly cast. Lawrence should be older (think Michael Caine!) and Freddie younger, giving more contrast between the wise, experienced conman and his eager pupil. Murphy and Bogan are too close in age to pull this off completely. That being said, each does very well with his respective role. Murphy oozes debonair charm and is clearly a master at the craft of bamboozling. Bogan shows a broad range with a talent for comedy, making Freddie as crass and uncouth as he needs to be, yet still very easy to like. There is a similar casting hiccup with Kipp Simmons in the role of Andre, a French policeman and cohort of Lawrence. Andre should be the experienced, seen-it-all, done-it-all, took-the-graft gendarme, much like Claude Rains' Captain Louis Renault in the film "Casablanca"; Renault is a worldly, mental match for Humphrey Bogart's Rick, going bad at times by choice, not because he is led astray. Here, Andre is too young, too easily led by Lawrence in his schemes. Despite this, Simmons executes the role well, particularly in his clumsy, yet successful seduction scene with the song, "Like Zis, Like Zat."
The tutor-pupil relationship takes on a new change with the entrance of Christine (Aurelie Rogue), the American "Soap Queen," newly arrived to the French Riviera. Rogue is perfect in the role, bringing the seeming innocence of the all-American girl, and causing the conmen's worlds to be shaken and stirred!
There are some wonderful supporting performances as well, with particular note deserved by Andrea Krasnow as Jolene, one of Lawrence's too-successful conquests, who delivers a rootin' tootin' song of the joys of "Oklahoma" she expects Lawrence will soon experience. Kay Noonan as Muriel, another of Lawrence's ladies, shows off some nice vocal talent in "What Was a Woman to Do" and is great fun to watch with Andre in their scenes following "Like Zis, Like Zat."
Sound designer Sean Leistico also deserves mention for keeping everyone clearly heard and presenting one particular effect that is too funny to give away.
The show continues March 12-14 and 19-21. You won't want to miss this! I con you not!

Solzhenitsyn (among others) said “write what you know.” Though it’s a long way from the Gulag, the KCK Nathan Louis Jackson knows– and serves up in his new play BROKE-OLOGY (now through March 21 at KC Rep’s downtown Copaken Stage)– rings every bit as comically and poignantly true as the Russian literary giant’s wind-swept Siberia. Though it may be cold outside, indoors the warmth and even joy of life drives us forward, hoping for mo and better.

This production, by an illuminating new playwright, Nathan Louis Jackson (born in Kansas City, Kansas, where his fiercely-felt domestic drama is set), reproduces a house residing in the Quindaro district: inside, an old air-conditioning unit is taped to one window, old board games fill a seen-better-days cabinet, and in the center is a sagging sofa; outside, dogs bark and the neighborhood is an unkempt collection of weeds and thugs.

When a show really works, when all elements combine into a whole that's more powerful than any one of them, then each element will, like DNA, also contain the whole within itself. At the Kansas City Repertory Theatre's potent production of Broke-ology, a drama set in the Quindaro neighborhood and written by Kansas City, Kansas' Nathan Louis Jackson, that whole is obvious in Meghan Raham's set: a run-down, lived-in home with dust-covered windows — a home that's still alive with beauty and light.

The Producers: Jun 2-12
Anything Goes: Jun 19-27
Red, White and Tuna: Jul 3-11
My Fair Lady: Jul 21-31
The Man Who Came To Dinner: Aug 7-14
And Then There Were None: Aug 21-28
Pump Boys and Dinettes: Sep 9-12
Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical: Nov 13-21
Artistic Director Quin Gresham and Managing Director Steve Bertani are thrilled to announce the 2010 Season schedule. “Our goal in assembling the Lyceum’s 50th season was to create a fun and celebratory combination of musicals and plays befitting this major milestone,” says Artistic Director Quin Gresham. “We think we have just such a line-up”.
The 50th Anniversary Season opens on June 2nd with the Lyceum Premiere of Mel Brooks’ The Producers, winner of a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards in 2001 including Best Musical. Based on the film starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, this outrageously funny musical tells the story of a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit and the investors want their returns!
The Lyceum follows the smash hit premiere with a beloved standard of musical theatre, Cole Porter’s Anything Goes opening June 19th. The 1920’s musical comedy Anything Goes is a farce set below decks on a ocean liner bound for London from New York. This age old tale of Boy-Meets-Girl and the complications that ensue are told through the incredible music and lyrics of’ Cole Porter. Anything Goes includes some of Broadway’s most memorable songs such as “Friendship”, “I Get a Kick Out Of You, “It’s Delovely” and “Blow Gabriel Blow”.
The Lyceum continues the fun on July 3rd with the hilarious comedy Red, White and Tuna, the third installment in the hugely popular Greater Tuna series. A Lyceum premiere, Red, White and Tuna takes place in Tuna, Texas, the “third-smallest” town in the State, “where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies!.” Two comic masters ignite the stage playing all 24 of the hilarious firecracker characters. This newest installment centers on the town’s 4th of July Homecoming Reunion and fireworks display, the homecoming queen contest, as well as a wedding, a honeymoon and the *** Snatchers’ drive to censor the Methodist hymnal.
Rounding out the first half of the 2010 Anniversary Season, the Lyceum returns to musical theatre with Lerner and Lowe’s 1957 Tony Award winning musical My Fair Lady, opening July 21st. When two noted British linguists, Prof. Henry Higgins and Col. Hugh Pickering overhear a cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle caterwaul in the street, they wager a bet that Higgins can transform the young girl into a refined Victorian lady. My Fair Lady introduced such classic musical numbers as “The Rain In Spain,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”
The laughs just keep coming with the fifth show of the 2010 season, The Man Who Came To Dinner opening August 7th. This hysterical three act comedy is written by the incomparable team of George S. Kaufman and Moss Mart, the same gentlemen that penned this season’s hit, You Can’t Take It With You. The Man Who Came To Dinner centers around Sheridan Whiteside, a distinguished theatre critic, lecturer and radio personality who, arriving to dine at the home of the prominent Stanley family in a small Ohio town, slips on their icy doorstep and injures his hip. A tumultuous six weeks of confinement follow, during which Whiteside monopolizes the living room and takes over the Stanley household. Before it's over, the outrageous has become commonplace. This stylish and funny production will feature one of the largest casts ever assembled for a play at the Lyceum.
Mystery and intrigue light up the stage next with Agatha Christie’s classic, And Then There Were None, opening August 21st. And Then There Were None also published under the title Ten Little Indians, is Agatha Christie’s best-selling novel with 100 million sales to date, making it the world’s best selling mystery. In this superlative whodunit, statuettes of little soldier boys on the mantel of a house on an island off the coast of Devon fall to the floor and break one by one as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger. Eight guests who have never met each other or their apparently absent host and hostess are lured to the island and, along with the two house servants, marooned. A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten "soldiers" met his death until there were none.
The Lyceum’s seventh show of the season is Pump Boys and Dinettes opening September 4th. This musical written by a performance group of the same name opened on Broadway in February of 1982. The musical tells the story of four men who work at a gas station, and two waitresses at the “Double Cupp Diner”, a dinette, located some where between Frog Level and Smyrna, North Carolina. Pump Boys and Dinettes is a raucous musical tribute to life by the roadside.
By popular demand, the Little Sisters of Hoboken are back on the Lyceum stage to close out the 50th Anniversary season in Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical opening November 13th. The nuns have turned their convent basement into a TV studio and are producing their first Christmas special. It stars the nuns you love plus Father Virgil and some of Mt. Saint Helen’s most talented students. With a mixture of their prepared program and a healthy dose of shenanigans, these singing, dancing sisters are sure to delight audiences because as everyone knows “ Nunsense is habit-forming”.
The Lyceum 2010 season will continue to offer special pricing for groups of 10 or more, also gift certificates for the 2010 season are available by calling the theatre at 660-837-3311 or visiting www.lyceumtheatre.org

The Pew Research Center has published a report on the Millennial Generation -- those 13 to 29 year-olds who have come of age since the year 2000. These young people are more racially and ethnically mixed than their cohorts in previous generations, are more tolerant and politically trusting and are engaged in social networking.
As we in the arts seek to increase audiences and arts participants, it is important that we look at generational culture and figure out how to engage each successive group.

The inaugural exhibit of the Orval Hixon gallery, Shooting Stars: The Celebrity Photography of Orval Hixon, is now on display at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The exhibit features images of some of Hixon's most famous celebrity subjects, including Theda Bara, Al Jolson, and Kansas Citian Joan Crawford.
Hixon transformed the field of portrait photography in Kansas City and the surrounding region during a career that spanned over seven decades. Hixon's studios, the first in the Brady Building at 11th and Main Streets and the second just one block west in the Baltimore Hotel, welcomed thousands of patrons including some of the most famous celebrities of the 1910s and 1920s.
Hixon and other photographers helped to successfully mold images of theater and film celebrities and their public personas in an industry based largely on visual appeal. As an Orpheum vaudeville circuit photographer, Hixon shaped perceptions of both veteran actors in the last years of their careers and hopeful performers on the brink of stardom. His artistic style set him apart and made him one of the most sought after portraitists in the nation.
Shooting Stars is the first in a rotating series of exhibits that will appear in the permanent gallery. Each exhibit will include photographs that highlight a different theme in Hixon's work.
This exhibit will be on display through July 31, 2010. Admission to the gallery is free.
The Orval Hixon Gallery has been made possible through a donation by James R. Finley, Charles David Hixon, and Linda Hixon of over 150 digital photographic prints, produced from Hixon's original glass plate negatives, and by the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts—Commerce Bank, Trustee.
Ordering information for these images may be found at www.sundancephotogallery.com or by calling 816.386.4310.

Sixteen-year-old Jake Walkup — the band’s baritone saxophone player — died in a one-car wreck on June 30, 2008. Determined not to let his life be characterized by his death, fellow musicians commissioned a musical piece that will make its debut today in Lansing.

The Gersh Agency has signed independent filmmaker Debra Granik and her writing-producing partner Anne Rosellini. At last month's Sundance Film Festival, Granik's latest film, "Winter's Bone," won the grand jury prize in the dramatic competition. She and Rosellini also received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for their adaptation of the Daniel Woodrell novel. Rosellini produced the dark drama.

Here’s a can’t-miss story line: Dope fiends solve personal problems by killing people. Here’s another one: Love transforms people and frees them. One could argue that both are supported by the Gershwin brothers’ 1935 operatic masterpiece “Porgy and Bess,” performed this weekend at Johnson County Community College.

As we had previously posted Starlight Theatre was taking a survey to gauge interest in holding a screening of the concert film Another Version of the Truth: The Gift. The film was assembled by a group of passionate fans under the project name of “This one is on us” using band shot footage that they released as a “gift” of the 2008-2009 Nine Inch Nails North America Lights in the Sky tour.

The At Ease with Opera series returns to the Kansas City Public Library on Monday, March 1, with Don Dagenais presenting The Galley Years: Verdi’s Path to Rigoletto at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.
Dagenais will discuss how Verdi’s early career influenced his three great mid-career operas, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata. The discussion will include audio and video excerpts.
Rigoletto is one of those "chestnuts" in the operatic repertory that continue to draw opera cognoscenti to the box office. It is considered by many to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Giuseppe Verdi's middle-to-late compositional career.
The program complements the Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s March production of Rigoletto.
