The district's summer education programs continue to gain popularity. This year more than 3,660 students participated in summer school, an increase of 42 percent over the 2010 attendance, according to Mary Matthew, director of school improvement and assessment.

Becky Metcalf, Aerospace and Engineering facilitator and math instructor at Olathe Northwest High School, is the Air Force Association's State Teacher of the Year. The honor recognizes classroom teachers for exciting K-12 students about math and science and preparing them to use advanced technologies.

The Olathe Board of Education began its June 2 meeting immediately following a public hearing on the republished 2010-11 budget. The hearing was required so the district could amend the general, special education, and Kansas Public Employees Retirement System funds and legally change its budget authority to maximize state aid to these funds.

A group of Heatherstone Elementary School fifth-graders placed first in Kansas in the Elementary Division of The Stock Market Game that ended April 29. The program helps students understand the risks and rewards of investment decisions using a hypothetical $100,000 in stocks. By the end of the 10-week program, the team had $102,646.40 in equity.

Bill Weber, a veteran principal of six years at Chisholm Trail Middle School, has been named principal of Olathe East High School for next school year. Weber replaces Tom Barry, who will retire at the end of June.
